  • GOsto muito mas queria ouvir outras canções dele e não tenho,não me dão

  • Fantastic! Sammy Davis Junior had such talent. Oh he would be turning in his grave listening to some of the atrocities that are in the charts today!

  • WOW!!!

  • He was never underrated! Before MJ there was Sammy. Movies, music, plays and civil rights. Hell.... even Sinatra always knew he was the best.

  • Sorry---I meant he and his talent! *butterfingers*

  • Truly one of the giants! He and hie talent are sorely missed. Thanx for this upload----a great rendition of a beautiful, meaningful song.

  • such a sexy voice!

  • @Shkadu3 Reportedly, Sam had a sign posted in his dressing room(s), "Please Smoke"

  • This was from fundraiser that Sinatra has organized in St. Louis in 1965...

  • Always, a class act, worth watching...

  • Masterful, meaningful musicianship - simply the finest of the fine entertainers. Sincere thanks for posting this...

Does anyone know what year this was?

  • what a legend. i will show my children later that kind of music....

  • Chills

  • Sammy was not only classy, talented, & a gentleman, but a great humanitarian! I worked with him in Lake Tahoe in the early 70's. He always treated me as his equal, even though I was a young college kid & white! I say my race because with Sammy you never heard the race card! He was the best all around performer I have seen in my 60 plus years.

  • @vmogul WOW!!! You worked with Sammy, please tell me what you did?

  • 3:00-3:09 ... goosebumps every single time I hear this song

  • brilliant

  • A true gentleman with a greatest talent and voice in pop history.. Long live Sammy Davis JR...

  • there are some that mimic Sinatra and Martin but fall short ,Sammy is incomparable ,although Sinatra was hugely popular, Davis had a slighly better range and seemed to get more appreciation for his craft when he worked alone , Mel Torme was so underated but he was in my opinion one of the best jazz singers of his time not taking anything away from the late great Nat "King" Cole

  • @capatga What a great point mate, I agree with it 100%, Sammy's range was different class. Love Mel Torme, he could sing and scat with the best of them. Greetings from Bonnie Scotland.

  • @capatga "slightly better range" is an understatement!

  • He was so gracious of the audience appreciation for his talent

  • RIP you masterclass genius, hope your teaching those boys in heaven how to be cool.

  • this is for RONNY Sitto

    I LOve you so much!!!

  • Perfection.

  • Truly an amazing performer. When you consider that he was was a proud black jewish american in a time when that was certainly not a popular combination his accomplishments are even more amazing. It speaks volumes to the amount of talent he displayed and of his wonderful showmanship. Not just a great singer but a great all around performer and artist. Fittingly, it was Sinatra and Martin who fueled the fire and aided in his career hugely! Sammy stated his gratitude for this often. Cool guy.

  • Davis is brilliant when he gives his all to a song! Few compare.

  • Hey dolly244, the 4 people that you claim are deaf, are not, they just want to annoy people and provoke. Shake it off, everybody is entitled to their opinion. Great performance by Sammy by the way !

  • perfect

  • Yesterday's music just has a lot of difference to today's brand of music...it has quality, depth and substance all put together....it is profound simplicity at its very best.....present day artists just don't have it....

  • So so underrated as a singer, really should have left Sinatra and Martin in his wake !

  • Yes I agree!!!!!!

  • To be honest, I find Sinatra tedious. Sammy Davis is way better in every way. Plus of course, once you get bitten by the Anthony Newley bug you just can't shake it off.

  • An amazing performance by an amazing man! Enjoy, and everyone have a great evening!

  • 4 people are deaf! Peace

  • my mother's wedding song, honestly

  • Comment removed

  • Almost perfect enunciation! Love this song and ahstc1973, I agree with you!

  • Its so outrageously good!!

  • 4 people have no one to turn to.

  • AMAZING PERFORMANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Now , that's what I call singing! Bravo Sammy!

  • Absolutely fantastic. 2:46 onwards especially... Sammy Davis Jr blows me away. Thank you. =)

  • Was this at The Sands? Or Kiel Opera House?

  • This is for my friend, Charlie Caffrey- "The Ghost of Christmas Present" could really sing this one! Merry Christmas to you, Drew , and Janine!

  • i am honestly truly genuinely in love with this man he simply amazes me

  • Now, that is what I call talent. Sammy made $500,000 a week in Las Vegas back in the 60's. Think about it, you could by a house for under $20,000. So, he could by over 20 houses each week. But he wound-up broke. That was some hard core partying!

  • Wow. I always favored Dino outta the pack but that ending alone has almost made me reconsider :O

    amazing.

  • One contemporary singer that reminds me a little of Sammy is El Debarge. I saw him recently opening for Mary J. Blige in Concord, CA, and he was just fabulous. His voice is higher-pitched than Sammy's but they actually look quite a big alike.

  • just great!

  • ……. What an awesome performance, so thanks, JACKS2, for uploading this gem. I hope that you appreciate it in the spirit in which it is given, Lori ~ (•8-D

  • i know everyone has their personal favorite, but sammy, dean and frank could all sing and performe like some damn pros, true true pros.

  • Sammy....and other entertainers of that era could actually engage an adience and draw them into the experience rather that just put on some one sided dazzling spectacle of a performance like artiests do today. People today just want to go on American Idol and be an instant star just because they can get up and perform.

  • He just emotes the greatest of all musical sensations... Perfection..

  • For me Sammy had the most beautiful voice of all the world. So potent and velvet at the same time!!!! What a joy listen to these artists!!!

  • Entertainment sure has taken a step backwards from his era, less class and more lights and makeup. If I'm 25 and I can see this, then why can't most of the young people these days see it?

  • this is the day of nothing but the pure voice! No miming no technology to tweak the voice. This is pure talent... sad to say what record companies today are willing to allow their artists THIS? how many could pull it off anyway??

  • Great !!!!!

  • I am performing this song for a festival and the actual version had a higher note end to the song, where it ended on a high a flat instead of that jazzy slide end to the song but Sammy still did an amazing job

  • NOW THATS A PRO!!!!!!!!!

  • I was driving with my mom from Colorado to Nebraska on I-76 when we heard the news that Sammy Davis had died. Then they played a recording of Who Can I Turn To." We were both in tears and had to stop the car. There will never be anyone like him. I watch (or mostly, don't watch) American Idol and think "what happened to REAL music?"

  • oh my gosh! everytime I hear those last notes!!! *sigh* so amazing!

  • Just fabulous. Truly magnificent. No one could sing like this man. His style will never be duplicated; his phrasing is his signature. I dare say he is my absolute favorite performer of all time.

  • WOW!

  • Que difícil era cantar de una forma espectacular, si que te rompieran la cara por tener es talento. Hoy es parecido. Thanks Sammy !!!!!

  • maravilhoso!!!

  • SERIO

  • I love him and this song every time I hear it.. Simply fantastic !!!!

  • ....and certainly mutual by the way.

  • Not many performers demonstrated regard for their audience as Sammy Davis did. It was sincere.

  • The greatest male singer of all time, bar none.

  • What a legend. Miss him.

  • Sammy Davis Jr the consummate entertainer. No one has or will ever replace him.

Look at this tape from the 60's - and over 100,000 views. Gone. But certainly not forgotten.

    Thank you, Jacks2!

  • Incredibly excellent!!!! There will nver be another like him.

  • True talent...when singers were singers and performers were performers. Multi- talented this great entertainer...Sammy Davis jr. Loved it back then..Loved Him!

  • Chills!!!!! Whenever he sings, he always brings it.

  • Just a fantasitc entertainer. This man could sing. I grew up watching him in the 60's and everytime he performed on the many television shows he was on, you could have heard a pin drop. Perfection!

  • I love Sammy Davis. Truly, THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER that ever lived! He could do it all and then some. He led the way to all those who came after him.

  • dude it's carlton

  • Paul Anka said recently in a concert that Sammy Davis Jr. was the greatest entertainers of all times.."nobody can touch him"!

  • @flansinatas Paul Anka is a putz -- I've worked with him.

  • It should be mandatory that if somebody is going to make a living off of show business, they ought to be able to go onto a stage all by themselves and perform. No backup dancers or singers. No overly sexed or flashy clothing. No lip syncing or crazy lighting. Just some music and a mic. Either the audience loves you or they don't. Sink or swim. I'm so sick of the mediocrity that passes for talent these days.

  • @TenderTrap86 AMEN!!!!!!!

  • ah when men sang like men

  • That's my man, Mr. Davis!

  • Best performance that I've seen from Sammy. Thanks for posting

  • well. i do have a "star to guide me"...sirius...(little joke).....it is love....but, yeah....no one beside me.....

  • so incredible, incredible

  • Definitely a singer of the first magnitude! He sings so clean and beautifully. Some singers have an annoying vibratto but Sammy has such a smooth silky one. I wish I was able to get all of his albums because they are so easy to listen to... a time when singers actually sing, not shout the notes!

  • I knew him well. He was a friend of our family . He was a kind, funny man . And he lived to perform ! I was proud to have known him , and to be able to watch him rehearse, perform , and give his all at every performance.

  • @tamarack44 Please, if you would write me. I am totally fascinated with Mr Davs; his life and music. I noticed from your post that you knew him well. I would appreciate any and all things you could tell me regarding your interractions with this great man. Thank you !

  • Voice of an angel

  • What an unbelievably tremendous voice.. I could listen endlessly !! Ive said it before, I believe he was the greatest performer to ever have lived.

  • Sammy Davis Jr...was such a HUGE TALENT!!! the greatest of singers with soul..and overall genuine performer!! He should have been more publicly famous in this genre of songs....Thank you for posting!!

  • His voice was just amazing. So sad he;s still not around. Thank you for thesevideo's. Regards Joan

  • Tremendous feeling and black soul.

    Stan Gilmer

  • Simply PERFECT : ) !!!

  • What a GENTLEMAN!!!!!!!

  • What a performance. He was brilliant in whatever he did whether singing, dancing or acting. This is a great version, I still like the Tony Newley version better but I would hate to live on the difference.

  • a truly good singer who not only had power but also control. something that is unfortunetly very rare. and of course not to mension the charisma that could blow you away

  • seems like sammy was having a bad hair day by the intro...

  • @DylHsu "A bad hair day"? What is that supposed to mean? You disrespect one of the greatest entertainers in the history of music; you should be ashamed.

  • @TheInvincibleViolet the way he says "thank you" when the audience starts applauding in the middle of what he has to say says to me he didnt really care about that audience and just wanted to get through the performance. i'm not ashamed of anything.

  • @DylHsu

Obviously you arent a true fan, of Mr. Davis.

I have seen NUMEROUS interviews with him, and heard him speak. He was a humble man, and grateful for the attentions of the audience. He loved to entertain, he loved the response he got from the audiences .He was doing what he loved. He NEVER "just wanted to get through a performance". He LIVED to perform. He NEVER took his audiences for granted.

You have no idea who he was, or what he was about. You have NO reason WHATSOEVER to insult him.

  • @TheInvincibleViolet Do you feel special for berating others on youtube? SDJ was human. Get off your fucking soapbox.

  • @DylHsu

I refuse to argue with you. You are obviously just rude and unreasonable, and your berating ME is inexcusable. Im here to comment on music and performers, not waste my time on people like you. I have nothing more to say to you. Be gone !

  • @TheInvincibleViolet Actually you commenced lecturing me. You proceeded to waste your time on me because it makes you feel good to insult them over the internet. What a worthless pursuit! You could have just ignored my comment if what you say is true, but no, you're here to project your point of view on others! Well, guess what? We don't give a flying fuck what you think!

  • @DylHsu *ignore

  • @Thefighterspider well good sir, kindly enlighten us all and tell us your undeniable definition of "good music" would be.

  • well, it seems that you don't know anything about those artists you named. sammy davis jr. was a great inspiration for MJ. he often said that. i don't think that he has been inspired by shit o_Ô

  • Absolutely wonderful. One of my regrets in life is not making it a point to see Sammy and the rest of the Rat Pack live on stage. What a marvelous group of talent I missed. At least I can listen to them here on you tube and through all the CD's I have. RIP Rat Pack

  • Amazing. Just amazing. Sammy's rendition is my favorite of this song. What a voice. Always blows me away.

  • This is an unbelieveably wonderful song.. He sings it with such ease, such resonance, and such perfect phrasing. Such a talent was this man, no other can ever compare. The way he pronounces the words, the conviction and focus in his singing of the song is so perfectly done. The ending is perfect, as is everything he did. One of the greatest entertainers that ever lived. Rest in Peace, Mr. Davis.

  • EXCELLENT!!!! EXCELLENT!!!!

  • wow, 18 years young...guess what

i was 18 and good looking (ha, ha)

when i was working in vegas at the sands..i beleive it was 1959..

i saw the rat pack at the sands..

    frank, dean, sammy,louie prima

vic dammone... the best years of my life...i admire you... because i fell in love with this guys... keep up

    the good work...thank you...

  • As far as I am concerned Mr Davis was the most talented multi-faceted performer that has ever graced the the American stage.

  • @ahstc1973

    I most whole-heartedly agree !

  • Paul Anka said recently in a concert that Sammy Davis Jr. was the greatest entertainers of all times.."nobody can touch him"!

  • @ahstc1973 Well said! and don't forget the screene too!

  • @ahstc1973 yeah he really was...I've just seen the entire show on DVD (turned out I had that benefit show without knowing it...¨D'OH) and he really was soooooo much better than Frank and Dean. His vocal performance alone was light years ahead of the others...

It also comes across as if he has more love or enthuciasm (spell check) for being a performer than the others

  • @ahstc1973 Damn right.

  • WOW. Rest in Peace.

    Innerhappiness

  • a privilege to have seen him live

  • A great artist!

  • Highly underrated vocalist.

  • This PERFECT!

    thanks master...

SammySammy Davis Jr forever lives on!

  • pricelesssssssssssssssss

  • Sammy is fantastic! The ORCHESTRA, however...

  • This is Count Basie Orchestra....

  • Seriously? It doesn't look like Basie conducting. This clip is probably from late '65, when "Greasepaint" had opened and Davis was in "Golden Boy". This conductor (visible behind Davis towards the end) has more hair than Basie did in a photo circa '55. Maybe it's his group without him conducting...but this sounds really under-rehearsed. I'd be surprised if it was Basie's band.

  • I actually have this dvd and Sammy references the orchestra. Other than that, I'm not sure. :)

  • I'm loving this - I forget how many times I've listened to this now & I'm still going. It's just so exquisite - he makes it all seem so effortless, it's amazing

  • True TALENT!

    We miss you Sammy baby....

    RIP!

  • Sammy is "Amazing"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • As young people, whenever my parents wanted to get rid of us, all they had to do was put on Sammy Davis Jr or Nat King Cole records, and we'd take off out the door!! LOL How ironic that after we saw these same Stars on the Ed Sullivan Show, and later, Nat King Cole got his own Show .. suddenly we learned to truly appreciate their Art and genius!! I still have my parent's old 78's records, and I'll keep them for the rest of my Life!! With Gratitude to ALL the GREATS!!

  • Anthony newley was a great singer songwriter.I wish I had seen him live.

  • looser

  • he misses the note whenever he says the word laughter

  • he changed it to the third instead of the second... no big deal. more of a lead-in into the final 8 bars.

  • This was in fact the sixties ;)

  • An absolute legend.

    And a voice to match.

    I love him.

If only I was 66 not 16 I may have have seen him at a live performance before he passed away to the hall of Legends.

  • Amen jazzgitman... Get rid of that rap crap too.

  • "Who Can I Turn To" is from a musical named "Stop the World, I Want to Get Off" which opened on Broadway in October, 1962

  • Wrong. It's Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd." Even Sammy tells you that in the video.

  • Thanks for the correction.

  • Classic Sammy! Wonderful. ("Golden Boy" ran on Broadway Oct 20, 1964 - Mar 5, 1966)

  • Did he do this number in his musical?

  • I'm a music instructor teaching guitar, bass, and piano. I make all of my students finally get into jazz. I make them listen to the greats. These masters knocked it out, night after night. No lip-syncing. No 200 takes and pick the best word or phrase. Listen to the band and the arrangement. Thank god we still have film score masters. We need to get back to real talent. Sammy and the gang had it. It's still out there. We just need to raise instead of lower the bar. Get rid of American Idol

  • Beautifully said. Thank you.

  • Get rid of the naked girls and dirty boys. I love to see a man, a grown man, singing in a tux or a suit. I agree with everything you have written. It makes me so sad that an entire culture, jazz & standards, seems to be lost. Adherence to these classics was a religion for the greats!

  • Right on! And just look at how long careers such as Sammy's, Frank's, Bing's, Deano's, Nat's and Louis' lasted. Those enteratiners and performers were around for decades. They weren't a passing trend or fad. They didn't need an army of backup dancers or bizzare lighting arragments to make a show. All they had to do was show up. Crooning and swooning with class and talent singing a song that was delightful, not frightful. Just a man, a mic, and a melody to sing to.

  • I love what you wrote. Call myself a "throwback" performer. Only use a chair, mic and stage to convey my talent.

  • Do your thing, brother! Breaking entertainment and performing down to it's bare essetials and minimum will prove whether or not a person is a star with real talent or just a cardboard clown who needs to be proped up.

  • Thanks. It is a hustle but the ones who know will appreciate it.

  • You said it, Jazzgitman. But who or what can go up against the media-powerful jackasses running what's aired for today's sloth-minded television audience? It's all about ratings, sponsors, the almighty buck. Sam and Frank are probably laughing at the whole Idol lot, yet wondering how so-called real talent could come down to boob tube flash-in-the-pan drama.

  • If Anyone Gets A Chance.. Check Out The Temptation's Version Sung By My Godfather Paul Williams.. It's On The In A Mellow Mood Album.. I Believe This Was His Inspiration..

  • Unbelieveable!!

  • Such a beautiful song! I know many artists have probably covered this song, but in my humble opinion, Sammy's version is the best. There is something about his voice and his style that makes him so fantastic!

  • An absolutely tremendous song by an absolute legend.

Shame on you morons for bringing comments about American Idol into this.

How could anyone remotely compare the two? Seriously.

  • i'm singing this song for a vocal recital, and this is AMAZING :D

  • What do you think of Allison doing Birth of the Blues? Maybe Adam on this one or What Kind of Fool?

  • Maybe Adam Lambert will choose this song?

  • What a show

  • Thank you so very much for reminding us what real talent and real music and real lyrics is all about. Those were the days of being swept away emotionally by such superb performances. So easy on the ears. And we can actually understand the lyrics and yet not miss a single instrumental lick. Such artists. Sammy was soooooooo cool. But back in that day, so were his peers. I miss him; I miss them all.

  • Wow!! That was an amazing performance. Davis was a brilliant talent and this song was Newley,s underrated masterpiece.

  • Excellent posting! Sammy at his best. Thank you.

  • probably the most versatile performer of his era!

  • possibly the most underated entertainer of his time. the more i watch the footage of him the more i learn to love him
