The Church is a fabrication of Peter, not Jesus and the Church Jesus started was lead by James which later was purged with the support of Peter and his Church. If Jesus returned today, he would not support many of the things the Catholics do or did over the centuries and probably would condemn them in many ways like Martin Luther and other protestants did. So the Pope coopts Jesus as a symbol for purposes Jesus, if he lived today, would not support as they are counter to Jesus's ministry.

The Catholic church and the gay rights movement are two totally different categories. One is a religious organization, the other is a movement that is focused on gay rights and not helping people. Its like comparing the Red Cross and worker unions, they have completely different goals!
And the catholic church has killed over 9 million people over the course of 200 years during the crusades. The gay rights movement has peacefully protested for the equal rights guarenteed by our bill of rights.
