  • 4:30 - 4:42 bull fu**ing shit !!

  • So in conclusion: There is no reason to think this is actually an addiction - it has none of the characteristics of an addiction, even respected psychologists refuse to acknowledge its existence- but i'm a TV presenter so I know more than them and i'm going to say its an addiction regardless of what people who actually know what talking about actually say.

  • "Do the things that young men your age do". Steal, mug, do drugs, get drunk, riot

  • LEE dowse was here!!!

  • You guy shut the f.uck off, this is a real issue, people get their lives losts to those games. Those games are designed to be addictive, this sh.it should be a crime.

  • @pablabra

Can't tell if trolling or just really stupid.

12 people died because of gaming since 2005. An average of 13 people A YEAR are killed by falling vending machines... and I don't see panorama making a show about the dangers of vending machines...

  • @pablabra Seriously, shut the fuck up.

  • i love it how they never managed 2 think that ppl who game r usually on the outside of social thing because of stupid reasons like looks, i love gaming not only as a form of entertainment but it is how i meet alot of my friends because looks have nothing 2 do with people perception of me

  • Believe me, "real world" sucks when you're "diferent" (Fat, Ugly, "too" black, Shy ect. ect.) People are mean to you, and they will try to bring you down everytime they can.

  • The korean kid

3 years later hes on stage on some starcraft match

  • Seriously I play a silly amount of games and spend a shit load of hours on them, but I jog and do my weights, and I have a life also, is it really that hard to come off for a couple of hours and get some exercise??

  • @kingfiirenze Agreed. Don't blame the game, blame the users. Same thing can be said about other things like marijuana and alcohol.

  • He even falls asleep in school! I refuse to believe it

  • My dad saw this documentary, so now whenever he sees me and my brother playing video games he always uses the "you seem uncomfortable" line

  • "since 2005 there have been atleast only 12 deaths"..... hmmmm and i suppose having a drink or going to a nightclub has caused less? ............. Bullshit

  • Okay lets disect everything we've learned here. Gaming Addiction does exist in some form and effects a minority of people who play the game, in the MAJORITY of these cases though there is a lack of communication and intervention from the parents, while it's plausible to say that World of Warcraft can become an addictive game it is also plausible to say that parents aren't paying enough attention to know their child is playing too much until it is too late. There are far greater existing problems

  • @CidHighwindRocks I also find it amusing how there's the suggestion that playing games instead of going to a nightclub, places that are infamous for excess of drinking, drugs and promiscuous sex, is wrong. EVERYTHING IN MODERATION IS THE KEY HERE. Getting smashed isn't any better than playing videogames infact there's more physical risks involved with drinking than any other social activity. Obviously I'm an avid gamer and I'm defending my hobby here but I also recently finished uni with a 2:1.

  • that mother pisses me off. shes using the gaming industry as a scapegoat to cover the fact that in truth she never even bothered to look into why her son was spending 20 hours a day on WoW. i mean ffs anyone with common sense knows 'everything in moderation' so why didnt she do her part as a parent and just talk to her son, ask him why he's playing so much, stop the excesiveness before it becomes a major problem.

  • World of Warcraft has parental controls for a reason. How is it gaming industries fault the mum didn't even try to control her sons gaming?

  • gaming has made me quite lazy though i admit that. i am not as close to my friends and dont play football, dont have a bird or a job. Im gonna change that all this summer. fuck gaming, play less and live your life.

  • Pong they called it. 40 years old. there's also this thing called the internet they go on. it' seems quite interesting I might have to look it up in the dictionary. tawt presenter.

  • they make this programme about people sitting infront of a screen for hours well what about the editor etc of this programme the viewers all them are sitting for a long time doing nothing

  • I'd much rather my son hang out in his room playing World of Warcraft than be out there on the corner doing half the stuff I was doing at his age. Hell, I wish I had a video game addiction when I was a teenager, would've saved me a helluvalot of trouble!

  • @RichieEastside but i guess whatever uve been to made who you are.. someone who can take care and buy toys for ur kids.. how bout ur son? he is deprived of all those things. even plants need dirt to grow.

  • well were not all like addicted south kereans and this documentery makes gaming seem as dangerous as achool or heroine gaming is entertainment and as dangerous as watching tv enough said.

  • "Both had low IQs"

    A hurr, a durrr.

  • A WHOPPING 12 DEATHS BECAUSE OF GAMES.

    OH NO.

  • @PixLatedDreams Beer related deaths are in single digits, right?

  • And Cancer, Aids, and other serious diseases are in the double digits, amirite?

  • im studying psychology at sixth form currently, may someone of a more informed status can help me out here...

The women on bbc breakfast recently claimed that games such as call of duty aqquire a fixed adrenaline rush, which over a period of time causes addiction, (an oversimplification).

However as far as im aware the real health risk is that consitant adrenaline is a chronic stress, which would lead to cardiovascular problems, like high blood pressure.

Whats the most threatening health risk?

  • i burst out laughing after i heard him say what he said at 1:49

  • Well, the issue here that there is a massive population of video gamers in the youth generation born in the 80s,90s and present. Its complete addiction, spending long hours in front a monitor or TV for the sheer pleasure of eye candy, adventure, new experience and satisfaction. I will say, now, more than 90 % of all 5-10 years old in the develop world have played video games. This going to be huge in the future.

One thing, its more saffer to play video games than to drink alcohol!!!

  • i herd of a guy in the usa who blew his brains out with a AK because his online girl friend dumped him that is a addiction

  • so what this guy just said towards the end is, until a paragraph is written on a website that no-one ever looks at, parents will be unaware of the risks....... wow, just wow, how biased if this guy lol

I don't mean to be offending any parents, but if you do not notice your children playing games 12 hours a day you have a problem. It is not down to the game companies... they sell... you buy. It is your responsibility.

  • @marlina8

    Could not agree more

  • What? insted of binge drinking? what the fuck are you complaning about, there buying expencive games and online subscriptions giving more mony to the econamy than the alcohol industory. WTF is wrong with that? im suprised the goverment isent promoting it to help remove the debt were in.

  • What? insted of binge drinking? what the fuck are you complaning about, there buying expencive games and online subscriptions giving more mony to the econamy that the alcohol industory. WTF id wrong with that? im suprosed the goverment isent promoting it to help remove the debt were in.

  • lol i laugh at all the gamers here who want to deny there addiction and try to change the subject by saying why care if we r addicted when there r drug addicts.

  • I believe i'm probably very much addicted because i hide away in my room the comfort zone for me and put on a game i love or talk on the internet.

I am probably addicted as well to internet.

  • If gaming addicts wernt playing computer games, they'd be addicted to drugs and alcohol instead. What does the government think is the better option?

  • @mephisto40 lol dude problem is they think the alcohol is the better option, and typically so do alot of people that age its because of the way they grew up they just cant understand the logic behind it and think we're all "nerds" and crazy for playing games, they would rather we be out drinking and coming home at 3:00am than playing games like cod or WoW cause its how they grew up.

  • Whats a video game? o.O

  • Addicted gamers here at full force defending theyr habit

  • @Hypercamera

this guy is right. *thumbs up*

  • wat is that music in 01:31

    i need a quick response

  • I feel hatred towards those people that let their baby and pets die because of their addiction. But when that tall kid got addicted and his mum was very concerned i thought "what the hell are you doing about that then? You could manage his time on his pc, or you could keep complaining about it being dangerous. Loads of people play games and don't get addicted, these parents have no right to stir up a fight when it's just their poor skills to look after their kids properly !! LISTEN UP !!

  • Guys, calm down. i like video games, I play them every day. I am not addicted.

This programme is not bashing video games.

It is highlighting a PROBLEM. One of gaming-addiction.

It is like doing a report on alcoholism. It doesn't say "ALL ALCOHOL IS EVIL." It merely states the DANGERS of alcohol.

    This is the same thing.

    So CHILL!

  • Don't u people get it!

A video game is magical, they are fun, life is so boring without video games!

  • interesting. ^^

  • The bit about rewards, where it shows the rat experiment and says "giving the gamer more xp for playing and unlocking stuff makes you come back for" is REALLY WRONGLY PUT!!!! that's the whole point, if cod didn't have a ranking system, and the ability to unlock guns etc. Who the fuck would play it! So biased against gaming, it's shocking.

  • @Y0J0E36 It should be about the fun of the game; devising different stategem for foes, not being rewarded randomly. That is what makes a good game

  • listen mr black guy Nobody goes on that website to begin with and this documentary is extremely one sided until the end and even then so ballz to you

  • What are you ppl talking about?? The program is about gaming addiction so ofc its going to go on about gaming addiction! I dont see anything in this documentary thats saying "this is how all the gamers are".. or so on.

Its about extreme cases, of ppl who spend all their time rather in a virtual world than in a real world.

Yeah and Im a gamer too... Used to play more before, sometimes trough night even if there was school next day.

  • this is the most one sided documentery ive ever seen. he doesnt wanna listen to reason. its pretty much just. omg games are bad you, you say there good your evil!'

i play WoW. and i use it to fill in the gaps of the day between working a full time job and going out socialing with my friends. does this meen im addicted? not really. it just means im quite happy to escape the world for an hour or two and not be bored on my arse watching crap tv. =/

  • lol 'get a girlfriend' buddies never seen a vagina in his life, mr pony tail

  • I'd rather be glued to the screen than have my liver fail on me.

This guy seems to have an opposite opinion.

  • why is the entire gaming industry being attacked just because of a minority that dont know how to run their lives? sorry mediapeople, but most gamers are not the "nerds living in their moms basement with no social life whatsoever" type of people that you make us out to be. so fuck off with your continuing ignorant stories about game addiction. you do realize that these news stories are a joke among the gaming media right?

  • @AnE000002 This actaully occur to alot of people. You can get addiction to anything as long you enjoy it. So either way its hard to break.

Game can do good affect and bad affect.

  • @cristtonny1 people need to take control and have the will power to run their lives. the human mind is capable of incredible feats and science has not even touched upon the things it can do, so it can break an addiction. the problem lies in people who are too mentally weak to do it. all it takes is the old school technique of growing a pair and telling yourself "no fucking way".

  • @AnE000002 I know but its easy said then doing it. If it was easy to break the habbit then it wouldn't be called addiction after all. Addiction is when you cannot keep your minds off one object/thing and of course it has more then that.

    Thanks for your reply. :)

  • "It's saturday evening and instead of going out for a drink or going to a nightclub young Koreans come to pc bangs play games." Oh no can't let that happen. Heaven forbid someone enjoys playing a game instead of getting drunk at a bar and being "normal"

  • It's called "moderation". Maybe you've heard people suggesting it with, I dunno, EVERYTHING IN LIFE. Also, this entire piece contradicts and undermines itself constantly to hilarious effect. Thanks for unintentionally making the opposing argument, guys ;-)

  • Even if they mention that video games have POSITIVE effects they spend all their time explaining what happened to the other 0.0001% of mental cases that HAPPENED TO PLAY VIDEO GAMES.

    Video games are bad! D:

  • 6:05 150 hours a week?? complete bull

  • Basically, it's ok to fuck up your liver with alcohol, but good heavens if you want to play a video game.

  • And the game mentioned most was......... "Please not WoW, please not WoW"

    .....Blizzards World of Warcraft! "Fuck."

  • Hey, that's not the games cause problems that people who can't control themselves.

  • You only live once, Have as much fun as possible and fuck this bbc crap.

  • what research! these ppl have personal problems! i can play Rpgs for 8 hours or more when i feel like and dont feel compelled to play more. im not a bloody rat >.>

  • 4:15 ''i used to hit him alot'' no wonder he loves video games, instead of his family.

  • the 1st family in korea, fucking idiotic fuck ups, playing a game about looking after a child, when you have your own? fucking morons.

  • 1:10 "it's saturday evening, and instead of going out for a drink or going to a night club" So this is what they think every should do?

  • @SteveTwoTheO yeah pretty much, welcome to Britain

  • in 5 years 12 whole deaths NO WAY, every year 1,256 people die from ball point pens, should we ban them?

  • @colonellemon Really? Death from pen?

    I know I shouldn't, but I can't help but laugh at that.

  • So the message here is basically "don't play games, go out and get drunk and do stupid shit instead"? Wow, great advice there.

  • lmao "Hi My Online Name is KakeBoxes and I'm a Game-A-holic, an haven't gamed for 5 hours." no but seriously I'm a serious Gamer and I still go outside and do shit... I'm also working on becoming a local dj... so it's not like Gaming is evil and I really think it is a "Media Hype." besides it has some benefits and not all people get addicted...

  • "Instead of going out to drink, Koreans come out to PC bangs, TO PLAY GAMES"

Gaming instead of alcohol? Oh the humanity! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOEESSS!!11

  • The best part of this program was the Korean part (obviously). The rest could have been shot with a tenner and a few tinnies. Pretty dreadful.

  • Thanks for sharing this doc

  • Definitely one sided. They just pushed their point of view. And at the end, 15 seconds were used to say "yeah,. games are fun too". Bullshit.

  • 1:08 "It's saturday evening and instead of going out for a drink or going to a nightclub young Koreans come to pc bangs play games."

So whats the problem? Why dont you mr. British person just keep drinking that good old healthy beer every day and stuff your fat mouth with some healthy dose of fish and chips. I hate these shows that if it doesn't work for you, it doesn't work for anybody and they make this whole show about it.

  • @Jopari444 " it doesn't work for anybody and they make this whole show about it."

is the ""they" refering to the british people? it better not be, as this kind of debate is always going to be around no matter how "safe" gaming is. look at the +18 debate in aus. and all that jack thompson shit ib the US.

  • @YOUgotbeatbyagirl no i dont mean the british

  • @YOUgotbeatbyagirl jopari has somewhat of a point going out for a drink is not good for you, alcohol is bad compared to gaming, drinking and driving etc. IMO moderation is key to EVERYTHING because i enjoy both of thease things and have no problems related to it

  • @YOUgotbeatbyagirl You have to remember, the amount of people who do actually get 'addicted' Is less than 1% of the entire gaming community, and how is going out to a club every weekend. smoking, and drinking, better than pplaying an online game with some friends you know, having a great time, without the need of substance abuse...

  • @Jopari444

there is nothing wrong with small doses of internet gaming. maybe if you just limited how much you are allowed to play games then people will be able to play the games and enjoy themselves without the addiction and death.

  • @26brepar62 yep i agree. but there are always going to be people that are too obsessed of something and thats just human nature

  • @Jopari444 i find it hilarious how foreigners think the British eat loads of fish and chips, its priceless. Im british and i'll go for a chinese or a curry rather than a fish and chip's n if you was going out on the lash you have to go for a kebab. Any way games are made to be addictive otherwise what's the point of playing if they don't immerse you in the world. You've got to admit that these PC bangs are a bit ridiculous when people are dying.

  • @tritton11 if you havent said chinese and curry i wouldve said it myself. the brits eating habits is so easy to stereotype

  • @Jopari444 Good point. "Going out for a drink" is a good way to find trouble. I've seen people get seriously injured in bar fights, not to mention the nasty health effects of alcohol consumption.

  • @Jopari444 im british and i find that 'slightly' offensive, I love how SOOOO inaccurate the British stereotype is :P

  • @Jopari444 notice the "leo" guy is ALSO a brit.this is more of a warning that if you get too addicted you might neglect something else. i understand where your coming from who wants to spend £45 to see a live band?! i mean GOD FORBID SOCIALIZING MEANS INTERACTING WITH PEOPLE FACE-TO-FACE!

  • @Jopari444 Ha, an American called someone fat. Oh Yanks. You so silly

  • @HatersGonnaHate1000 where the hell did you get in your head i was an american? you just decided in your mind and that i was and went with that? damn you must be a smart person

  • @Jopari444 Im british, so theres no need to insult everyone, but i agree this guy is quite irritating

  • these camps are just like any other training camp, if done wrong these kids will be pushed beyond the limit...there are several cases where camps in which parents seek to change their child's "shortcomings" have resulted in their child being worse off or even commit suicide...

  • I say that it was kind of fair, but it was still one sided. With the idiot mom that can´t control her son, the 15 game related dead koreans since 2005 and the dead baby there is no way no gamers can have an informed opinion about games in general. It is still fearmongering.

  • Isn't going out and getting smashed simply replacing one alleged addiction with another potential addiction?

  • @Talouin He clearly has some problems that need addressing that aren't being addressed.

  • Comment removed

  • So there whole case is basically that some sad people get addicted to games like World of Warcraft, those kind of people are considered a joke by the majority of the gaming community. Journalism fail of the highest degree, I expect so much more of the BBC.

  • @VideoGameSte I'm an avid gamer and I have absolutley no interest in World Of Warcraft. The RTS games were great. Everything I've been shown about WoW is just ... No. The subscription fee, Blizzard, you are very clever people.

  • @VideoGameSte ye the BBC is kind of a fail but then again its funded by our government which is funded by us wait a minute this horse shit

  • Notice that they don't speak with any experts who say that gaming isn't addictive. It's not that such experts don't exist - there's a reason why gaming isn't officially regarded as an addictive medium. Panorama isn't interviewing any psychologists who have a contrary viewpoint. Could the reason be that Panorama isn't interested in a point of view that doesn't fit with the program writer's preconceived notions or his agenda?

This is poor journalism. Panorama used to be better than this.

  • @BeeryUSA here in Spain we see how that traditional media don't put atention at all at videogames, except when it's something really important (for example a worldwide release like Starcraft II or WoW). The conclusion we take out from this is based on the idea of "one more gamer, one less TV watcher", so it's better for the mass media business to not promote their benefits...

    Greets!

  • @tutymurcia perhaps thats the reason because this Panorama chapter is kind of biased, videogames are changing the way we consume digital leisure time, theres more than BBC movies and series, and thats out of their business...

  • @BeeryUSA The program was poor. It could definitely have been shot by anyone and for peanuts, just to add insult.

  • According to this guy if someone plays video games for six hours there a loser? So would he say the same thing if someone watch's the BBC channel for that long if not more? And there people that do watch TV for that long why not post warning on the BBC web site about the damaging effects of watching TV? If you notices most the problem are being causes not by the games but by bad parenting.

  • Nice objective documentary! :)

  • Comment removed

  • @Moonchild1607 3. Let me ask you something Moonchild, what would you pick?

TV bombarded with adverts and ignorant, one-sided documentaries like this, or an epic video game where you fight a Greek god on top of a giant climbing a mountain?

    Exactly, Moonchild...

  • random extra life? That just wins!

  • Big news! A low % of people have low will power and are negligent! Oh wait, no that is just life.

  • Popular media takes a sensationalist approach.

Games industry gets defensive and ignores problems.

    Rinse. Repeat.

I think the overall tone of the show was very negative regarding games and I would be interested to see the rest of the comments from the gamers at the convention but the ending was much more useful as was the advice to parents. Benefits of online communities needed more time too imho.
