i think the two are perfect together, even if they sing with their different style. While Stacey is cheerful, fresh and feel free, Suzanne makes her presence by a little bit of soft, elegant and deep.
sorry about my english, writing french is honestly easier for me.
Suzanne vega seem like she didnt want to connect with Stacey Kent. what was up with that? Stacey kept looking at her and tried to connect with her several times from the beginning and all throughout the song... Vega just keep looking down (at the lyrics or whatever she's looking down at) everytime Kent smiled at her.
@benalchemist74: You embarass yourself with your childish comment - neither of these women are lesbians, irrelevant of their short hair! Stacey Kent is a very talented jazz singer and a great performer; Suzanne Vega shrinks by comparison and she seems to know it.
Look at the coy way Stacey Kent looks up into Suzanne's eyes, with that impudent little smile, and Suzanne's eyes are half-shut or glazed over, not making eye-contact, like she just wants to get out of there. This video ought to be called, "Suzanne Vega mentally raped on stage by lesbian."
My only criticism is that I wish Suzanne Vega were feel the phrase rather than each and every beat. It would be much more musical that way. That said, I love the way she harmonizes the refrain. : )
OMG Suzanne it's just horrible. Does anybody remark the difference. Suzanne has no swing in this voice. PLease next time let the Wonderful Stacey Kent sing alone !!!!!
@musicismylife57 I Think the problem is because she didn't know the lyrics by heart, which is fair enough for this song. She has to read the words all the time.
I'd love to hear Stacey Kent singing it in Portuguese. I saw her on a Brazilian talk show speaking Portuguese. I believe she would do a good job with some training.
@oddood 'revolted'? It's actually not unheard of for people to actually read the sheet music while playing or singing you know? You make it sound like they're 'cheating'.
@brit1958dec I agree, there are more words in this song than most, lots of them interchangeable - if you're not careful it'd be easy to find yourself in the wrong part of the song, that & the fact that it's a duet makes it even harder. I wonder if oddood can sing the whole thing straight off. I couldn't. PS. Stacey Kent does know the words, there's another vid of her singing it solo. PPS. I love that little dance she does a couple of times. She is absolutely entrancing.
@BackToTheBlues I actually learned it in portuguese , although i do not speak the language. The whole thing. it took weeks of practice, and I'll know it when I'm an old man. I'm still calling bullshit on this performance. Duets are supposed to be impassioned, these two look like they got thrown together on a blind date gone wrong. The poetry of this song in the original language is entrancing, in English it sounds like sesame street, as do most translations of bossa or cuban music.
...sharing with friends, maybe, is a theme of this song. I read somewhere that the lyrics describe a walk in the rain forests at the end of summer there. Opposite of mine, naturally. riveting performance...
I was going to post how Stacey Kent has a great talent, a nice, simple, direct singing style with a lovely sweet tone and superb timing, but when I saw those eyes and that smile I realised I could boil it down to this: I think Stacey Kent would be very easy to fall in love with.
Totsally agreed. Compared to Suzanne Stacey is more bubbly and flirty, playful even - unlike Suzanne, who seems to take it more seriously and focuses on holding on to the mic.. They're both awesome singers, but based on this video I could easily imagne myself falling in love with Stacey, the music and singing of whom I had never heard before.
There's room in the world for many versions of this magically poetic song! Thanks for posting this. There aren't many fine English versions, and this is a nice rendition! (Oleta Adams and Al Jarreau, too!) Greetings from Florida.
Are you joking? Well, I guess then, that maybe musical feeling of Europeans and Latinas is completely different.. This version is really not like the Portuguese.. And it´s only good, couse it´s wonderful:-)Great tempo, atmosphere, jazzlike piano and outstanding musical feeling of Stacey Kent makes from it almost perfection! Only Suzanne Vega seems quite "unsuitable" for this song...
dude seriously, no more excuses this version sucks ass... try Sofia version of this song... sofia the filipina.... swear to God you curse this girls by murdering such a woderful song...
don't agree with vasconcelos. Both are top class, moreover i think that siren Susan was singing but reading Verre ardent by M.Maeterlinck:
"je regarde d'anciennes heures, Sous le verre ardent des regrets; Et du fond bleu de leurs secrets Emergent des flores meilleures. O ce verre sur mes désirs! Mes désirs à travers mon Âme! Et l'herbe morte qu'elle enflamme En approchant des souvenirs! Je l'élève sur mes pensées, .......... Otherwise in her Bloody Mary there was poor vodka!
Stacey Kent is even better in person! I've seen her and her incredibly talented husband, Jim Tomlinson, twice at Blues Alley. If you ever get the chance to see them, please do!
Just think that Suzanne should've learned the lyrics before performing instead of spending the whole song looking to the paper...
