Britain should have an Olympic football team, the argument against it is pathetic. Its not like we are going to have a British team for the world cup. Some people have to much of a chip on their shoulder.
I love England, it's got a lot going for it and of course we share much. I still don't want our government dictated to by the south east of England who generally vote Tory. Hence why the british government's priorities will always lie south. We'll be far better neighbours when we're both independent and will still work closely together. Cheers mate.
That's fine if you see Britain and not England (or Scotland for that matter) as your country. Countries are all man made at the end of the day and it comes down to what you personally feels best represents you. Britain to me is nothing more than a political state, created by an elite few for trading purposes. As you say, it's 300 years old unlike Scotland and England who are 2 of the oldest unified countries in Europe.
Maybe you trust Blatter to keep his word. I don't.
Financially, in infrastructure provision for the 2012 Olympics, English companies have won contracts in excess of 5 billion pounds; Scottish companies have recorded a total of 22 million. Great Britain: serving England.
I'll be supporting France or the Netherlands or Germany.
Im English, I don't want the football associations to merge ever, however I think a GB Olympic football team is necessary due to the fact we're staging the Olympics.
No problem, It is kind of funny when you think about it. All those English journalists shouting Scotland's subsidised (no politician has ever said it publicly), and it turns out that it is England who is being subsidised all along. Kind of pathetic but defiantly laughable I agree.
Yes the Scotlands subsidised myth is a delusion. I ask myself this question all the time: What is worse; the people who perpetuate this lie (media) or the people who believe it because they are too dam lazy to check the facts for themselves? Personally, I think the people who believe what they've being told without ever questioning it, are wide open to manipulation. It's those peoples fault that events such as their own part of Britain being a total Wright off occurs, nobody else's'
Yeah, Government Expenditure and Revenue Scotland (G.E.R.S) must be bullshit. After all it's only an official and public record of how much money Scotland makes and spends. The only real way of knowing the truth must be to read the papers and watch TV, yeah that's where all the truth is. (that was all sarcasm btw).
Get real, actually check the facts, learn from them or ignore them and remain in your comfortable bubble of shameful denial.
"SNP bullshit" it is not, but even if G.E.R.S was SNP bullshit then why does Westminster's chancellor use it to determine Scotland's block grant? the information comes from the Council of Economic Advisers (Scotland). All of these advisers are economic academics with distinction and international reputations. They're from England, Scotland, the U.S and elsewhere and none are willing to tarnish their reputation by making up "bullshit". You can stay in denial or accept the truth.
Right to the point pete wishart. Im in the scotland supporters group and I say 'NO to team GB', and so would the majority of scotland football fans. Therefore the fans don't want it, then why should the SFA go against its own fans, welldone to the SFA for trying to protect its future. Scotland says no, wales says no, northern ireland says no, end of subject.
Jim Murphy, I do not know how you sleep at night with the utter rubbish that comes out your mouth. Well I suppose its easy when you have no morals, conning the un-educated to vote Labour. Shame on you, do us all a favour and never come back to Scotland ever again. We do not need people that try to make us feel as though we could not run our own country. Mr Negative,
NO to team GB. In fact, I would like to see the Welsh team at the Olympics and ALL sporting events. Why should we be lumped together with a war mongering nation? No thanks. In any case, when a 'British' athlete achieves a medal, if they are Welsh, Scottish or Ireland - the title almost always focuses on Britain. When it is an English person, then the word English or England are used. There is no such thing as a 'United Kingdom' - it's just an English kingdom under a pc name.
forgive my ignorance, but why do we even have england, scotland, wales and northern ireland national teams? none of these 'home nations' are actually proper countries. not england, not scotland, not wales. we are the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland and nothing else. our 'home nations' are nothing more than states a la USA, India or Germany. sure, we have different institutions, governments, laws, etc. but so do federal states the world over. we are GB in most other sports!
right, so we'll be having our hard-earned tax back that we subsidise you with and we'll gleefully watch as you turn independent, go bankrupt and then clamor to join the union again.
believe me, i won't mind, we'll finally have our money back to spend it where it SHOULD be spent, where the VAST MAJORITY of our nation live!
Perhaps you;ve failed to notice, but Scotland doesn't get any subsidies from anyone - let alone England (you do realise that England is in the red to the tune of around 11% of its GDP?) Then there is the whole question of North Sea oil......
perhaps you've failed to notice that scotland does gets massive subsidies from england. it's common knowledge. the population of scotland? 5 million. england? 50 million. due to the low population but high quality of public services, there isn't enough tax revenue generated to pay for it all. in fact, since 1999, public spending has outstripped tax generated there by 45 per cent. where does the remaining 55% come from then? i wonder. can we have it back now please, ungrateful sods.
Nope, and even if it were the case that Scotland's was getting subsidies from anyone - it wouldn't be England. England is one of the most indebted countries in the world. Compare and contrast. England has run a surplus (raised more in tax than was spent on itself) in only 5 of the last 40 years.
Scotland has run a surplus in 3 of the last 3 years. Those are the facts. In some parts of England, government spending takes up 70% of the economy. In 2008 in Scotland, government took up 39% of it.
we are indeed indebted. but still doesn't solve the question of where more than half your budget comes from? i'll help narrow it down for you: it's not from n. ireland, wales... hmm, i wonder where in our little union it comes from? and most definitely scotland has IN NO WAY raised a tax surplus in the last few years let alone in the last three! i have no idea where you're getting this information from but you are seriously deluded.
More than half of it? 100% comes from taxpayers domiciled in Scotland.
The information comes from the Government Expenditure & Revenue analysis freely available from the National Statistics website. Those are the authoratative figures and show a Scottish fiscal surplus in all recent years for which data is available 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2007/08.
I see Judas Brown is now backing England's bid to host the 2015 Rugby World Cup, in opposition to Scotland's bid, despite the fact that England hosted the final in 1991 and Scotland never have. Does Jim Murphy also support this position?
Can we be honest for a second? Putting aside all national bias, wouldn't most of the starting XI and bench be made of English players? There's more money invested in the game, and the only non-English player I can realistically see making the starting XI is Aiden McGeady.
That said, I still think we need to either have Team GB for all sports, or individual teams for each nation in each sport. Can't separate football out from the other sports just because it's more popular.
@rolandsausage Correct! You took the words right out of my mouth! I am English and while I know I might not be at the top of Scotland's christmas card list, I wholy support independence for Scotland and evetually Wales. Don't ask me about Northern Ireland. People have moved on from that British Empire crap from 100 years ago. Get with the times, Murphy! You can't walk into an electronics shop ask ask for a gramophone!
that is some bullshit. england still can't escape it's past cultural imperialism towards it
s closest neighbors. This is saddening because it shows so much disrespect for countries that I'm sure England still feels like it should be subjugating. This attempt at an FA take over is the same as raping the hopes and dreams of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Shame on you England. Haven't you had enough imperialism for a millennium?
@cydc08 the people who were arguing for a team GB were scottish, you fuckin idiot. no one in england wants a team gb either, we just get it forced upon us by the FA and gordon brown who is SCOTTISH. think before you speak, you ignorant moron
I have to side with Wishart. I don't see how this could be a "one off." How can 3 out the 4 home nations be bullied into a Team GB, with nothing on paper to ensure their continuation as an independent post 2012? PM Brown & FIFA's Sepp Blatter can "talk" all they want of the promises that this is a one off. But with no written assurances, this Scot says.. not NO.. but HELL NO! to a Team GB. I believe the Welsh & Nor. Irish would agree.
