you should rev the Ford at the same RPM as the Fiat and then make your measurements, you are comparing two vehicles with different engine sizes. The Fiat is probably at 4-5000 rpm and the raptor at around 2000 rpm at a speed of 75mph. The Fiat is a European city car which is made for inner city speed limits not highway driving.

Interesting that the Fiat 500 is only registered as LEVII in CA, while the Raptor's V8 is ULEVII. The Raptor also uses Air-Fuel Ratio sensors and 2 catalysts (one per 4 cylinder bank, I'd imagine), while the 500 uses an O2 sensor (or lambda, narrow-band) and 1 catalyst.
HCs are important, but they aren't the whole story. The carbon monoxide coming out of the Raptor suggests more fuel is being burned than the Fiat 500's. HCs can be removed by a complete engine burn and good catalytic converters

Carbon dioxide CO2 and carbon monoxide CO are sometimes confused. They are quite different in their effects on humans.
Carbon dioxide CO2 is present in the atmosphere today at 385 parts per million (by volume) or 0.039 percent. 50 years ago it was 280 parts per million. The increase is caused by people burning things, especially fuels - coal, oil, and natural gas, especially coal. Burning wood also puts CO2 in the atmosphere.
Almost all life is dependent on plants getting CO2 from the atmosphere. That's where the carbon in wood and leaves comes from.
Human and animals breathe in air, take some of the oxygen from it (air is 20 percent oxygen), and breathe out a mixture that includes CO2 obtained by combining part of ones food with oxygen.
Air can be about 5 percent CO2, from a stuffy room, before people become uncomfortable. According to the Wikipedia article, amounts above 800 ppm are considered unhealthy, amounts above 5,000 ppm are considered very unhealthy, and those above about 50,000 ppm are considered dangerous to animal life.
Carbon monoxide CO, unlike CO2, is a bad poison. CO is produced by incomplete combustion, i.e. when there isn't enough oxygen to make CO2, you get CO.
CO2 are completely safe for humans and animals, you produce it every time you breath out or fart. Its all the other gases and particles that are toxic.
You'd have to drive a Raptor 235 miles — stopping every 505 seconds and doing cold restarts — to emit the same level of hydrocarbons as simply idling the two-stroke leaf blower for less than 10 minutes.
Clearly, engine displacement plays little part in the concentrations of these pollutants. Consider that the Fiat 500 produced more than double the NOx and more than three times the hydrocarbons of the truck.
A close look at the vehicles' underhood emissions labels sheds further light — the Fiat 500 is classed as LEV-II, whereas the Raptor in California trim is ULEV-II. The Raptor's emissions control equipment is simply more capable. It's only in the production of carbon dioxide (CO2) — not yet directly regulated by EPA or CARB — where the Raptor is the higher emitter.
It's worth noting that the load on the dyno rollers is adjusted to reflect the aerodynamics and drivetrain loss of the vehicle being tested. So the Raptor is indeed being asked to work harder at a given speed than the Fiat, just as they'd do in the real world.
Two-strokes are superior to everything. They make massive power out of a tiny package and with relatively very few moving parts. Their emissions problem has been fixed with direct-injection, which makes them comparable to four-strokes in that category.
Hurrr durrr the 2 stroke engine was the dirtiest. 2 stroke engines have 2 stroke OIL mixed in with the FUEL. What the fuck were you smoking when you thought up this concept?
@ronmann606 I am verry sure that CO (which they abriviated for C02) is infact a greenhouse gass. also Hydrocarbons are not only a green house gas they are toxic. The reason the raptor did so well is because it was able to burn the fuel more completely.
@PerformanceCars1FCH1 LOL @ "very sure". Everything you said is wrong. CO is highly toxic and not CO2, and is not a greenhouse gas. Traces of hydrocarbons aren't a greenhouse gas. I was just saying the Raptor is the worst for global warming.
where did you get your conventional wisdom? Did you even attend a college? Because right about the last days of middle school you should have known that the bigger the engine -> the cleaner the exhaust emissions . And if you consider an amount of pollution per unit of power the number are even higher. That pick up truck per unit of power has lower emissions than Prius and yet Prius cannot pull a ton of shit to the dump site, and Ford does not require toxic batteries.
@regiyankee no, you did not purchase your brain yet. The trains that have huge smoly diesel engines pollute less per unit of power and per lb. of weight they pull (deliver your tofu and couscous) than a fucking Prius. The so called clean vehicles do one unimportant thing and that's all- they take you to a green douchebag circle jerk once a week. Large engine trucks on the other hand can do that plus million other things ( that are actually necessary) and pollute less than Leaf or Prius.
Complete combustion = more Power/Efficiency "Volumetric Efficiency" go out and smell a 1995 Chevy V8 pick up truck...gross smell and weak power compared to emissions and power of the Ford EcoBoost V6... but i'd still rather have a 1969 Ford Fairlane 500 fastback with a 460 Big Block blown to HELL or a 1971 Impala SS
@GhostCell07 there are enough Polar Bears to provide every home in Canada with Polar Bear floor mat and there will be enough left to serve as lunch meat to every employee of every oil rig owned by Al Gore.
R-i-g-h-t, a 6000 lb full size Ford pick-up with a 420 hp 6.2L engine puts out less pollution than a 15 lb 0.05L leaf blower, that's not impressive. All you flunkys need to go back to school.
@1vdn992 Well, the reason for this is the blowers are less efficient. Car manufacturers actually have to utilize a lot of optimization (such as 4 stroke vs 2, and direct injection, etc.) for and in many sense. Long story short, this was expected. However, this also proved that ford raptor has better environmental tech on its ENGINE than the Fiat 500. u need to know more about critical thinking and research.
@fackyoudude A 5.0L Mustang GT with 412 hp gets 17 city and pollutes substantially less than a 4.0L BMW M3 with 414 hp that gets 14 city, is that a better comparison?
@1vdn992 I would say no, because now you are comparing the CAR, not the ENGINE.However, if we were to compare the CAR, then yes, mpg is a good/fair indicator.
@1vdn992 hmmm, I like ur corner of ignorant. u r compare the CAR as an unit. I just told you, the way this video is comparing is """ENGINE"""" or """"DRIVETRAIN"""" as a unit. So the image of the car is pointless. This is more about Emission Tech comparison. For the argument sake, the way you shit doesn't necessary = the way you eat, but ur overall behavior as a person (the whole car) is just as bad. get it? did you even pass high school?
@fackyoudude It looks like Ford knows how to build clean burning vehicles, the compact Fiat failed to burn as clean as Fords high performance pickup the Raptor, but that's not setup for real world use, actually an engine dyno would be a much more accurate way to analyze exhaust emissions, the vast array of other engineering variables aren't important at all, you're right, and comparing the Raptor to a smoky leaf blower that burns about as clean as your ass is just childish.
The test is seriously flawed. The majority of a car's pollution comes at cold start when the cats and everything else on the car is cold and inefficient.
Unless someone understands the concept of ppm readings, this test is completely misleading. The V8 raptor can me a more refined engine, but still produces a grater total amount of emissions than a significantly smaller engine. eg what you find in the fiat 500.
lol. that video sure tells the whole story.... NAAT. lol now a whole bunch of rednecks are going to think there big trucks are environmental..... thats just what we need
What a deceiving and biased test. Sure, the leaf blowers had poor emissions but there's no catalytic converter. Also, why does the test not mention CO2, ohhh, because obviously the FIAT did much better than the 6.2L Ford, and that would mean results that InsideLine didn't want to post about...
@toofast907 Yes, they post the numbers, but they fail to include the largest part of emissions - CO2. Also, units would be nice. 0.276 doesn't mean anything without units.
@EngineeringExplained how about you go test it for yourself and make your own youtube channel and you can then post the CO2 results to satisfy yourself.....
@TeamEpsilonRacing Or InsideLine could post them, as I'm sure they have the figures. I do have my own channel; it's educational to teach people about cars who have an interest and want some easy to follow explanations about them. Though I don't have the equipment nor the cars to do this test on my own. Ford has done a great job of improving their emissions, but this is the wrong way of presenting it.
@EngineeringExplained Are you serious? That would be like if we had two cars and we were doing a power test to see which has more power and when mine wins you say it's a biased test because I have a supercharger.
Just because you can explain why the one that wins wins doesn't mean it's no longer a fair test. I mean, it's not like this is a test of skill or anything.
@thekkl Perhaps you should learn up a little bit on combustion. InsideLine is claiming that the 6.2L has better emissions than the Fiat's engine which is more than 4 times smaller. Put fuel in, get CO2 and H2O out. That's the basics. The more fuel you burn, the more emissions you have. Now are you going to tell me that an engine 4 times larger burns less fuel? No. Ford did a great job, but don't think you're saving the planet by driving a 6.2L truck...
@EngineeringExplained You can save the planet by buying diesel because it takes less fuel to make diesel. So much less that if you own a prius you are doing more harm to the environment than someone in a diesel.
What a stupid test! Why not make it equal and take out the catalytic convertors in the car and truck? You're also comparing 2 strokes to 4 stroke motors.
Nonsense. The Fiat is obviously the cleanest when you're talking about Carbon Monoxide which is important. The fact that the Raptor made 5 parts per thousand less NOx's than the Fiat is of no consequence seeing as that's the same as the most polluting 2-stroke leafblower. Cleaner than the air going in? Yeah in non-monoxide hydrocarbons due to a cat. The Fiat produces 3x less CO2 than the Ford too
You wait and wait thinking "humm interesting..." then boom, they ruin it with silly interpretation.
leaf blowers have no filters of co2 or something like that and emission of co2 is bigger than in smal fiat Im sure that after 2 years ford will have much bigger emission because of big engine
If they were to add Direct Injection to the 6.2 it would be even cleaner AND have less start-up emissions which is where the majority of bad stuff comes from...at start up.
I think the same comparison used to made with motorcycles (almost none of which had emissions equipment on them per usual) vs. a car with a catalytic converter. The assumption was that a bike with a tiny motor would be much better for the environment than say a car...but the inverse was true...bikes esp. 2 strokes are quite dirty and much larger displacement than something like a leaf blower. It was just a comparo to show how clean cars are now and how surprisingly dirty some things can be.
this whole "lbs per mile" emissions thing is a JOKE, what does that even mean!?.. its all made up non sense to get us spending more money we DONT HAVE on crap like electric/ hybrid cars
The 500 throws out marginally more NMHC and NOx but a whole lot less carbon monoxide, which is way more toxic. How can you say that "overall" the Raptor is less polluting than the 500?
No shit, the tiny leaf blower has a higher percentage of CO2 in its emissions? WOW! Did you also consider the fact that the huge truck blows out like 50 times more emissions every minute than that tiny leaf blower?
No seriously ! a 2 strock engine pollute more than a 4 strock engines!wow! not to mention that the cars has catalytic exausths where the leafblower does not The CO/CO2 and NOx emission that matters when it comes to polution yet you compare NMHC???! So what you want to say is that Ford raptor is a clean car, is that the conclusion you are trying to get? No seriously!
What a useless video.. we subscribe to you for car tests reviews and comparisons. not to see how much carbon dioxide we emit into the atmosphere when we cut the grass.
I want this video on my Hurricane II phone.

1vdn992 2 months ago
@1vdn992 Well, the reason for this is the blowers are less efficient. Car manufacturers actually have to utilize a lot of optimization (such as 4 stroke vs 2, and direct injection, etc.) for and in many sense. Long story short, this was expected. However, this also proved that ford raptor has better environmental tech on its ENGINE than the Fiat 500. u need to know more about critical thinking and research.
fackyoudude 2 months ago
@fackyoudude A 5.0L Mustang GT with 412 hp gets 17 city and pollutes substantially less than a 4.0L BMW M3 with 414 hp that gets 14 city, is that a better comparison?
1vdn992 2 months ago
@1vdn992 I would say no, because now you are comparing the CAR, not the ENGINE.However, if we were to compare the CAR, then yes, mpg is a good/fair indicator.
fackyoudude 2 months ago
@fackyoudude "Now are you high or just stupid? An M3 against a Mustang GT? On a racetrack? Seriously, son, which one is it? High or stupid?"
4.0L BMW V8, CO2 Emissions, 1.20 lb/mile
5.0L Ford V8, CO2 Emissions, 0.96 lb/mile

1vdn992 2 months ago
@1vdn992 hmmm, I like ur corner of ignorant. u r compare the CAR as an unit. I just told you, the way this video is comparing is """ENGINE"""" or """"DRIVETRAIN"""" as a unit. So the image of the car is pointless. This is more about Emission Tech comparison. For the argument sake, the way you shit doesn't necessary = the way you eat, but ur overall behavior as a person (the whole car) is just as bad. get it? did you even pass high school?
fackyoudude 2 months ago
@fackyoudude It looks like Ford knows how to build clean burning vehicles, the compact Fiat failed to burn as clean as Fords high performance pickup the Raptor, but that's not setup for real world use, actually an engine dyno would be a much more accurate way to analyze exhaust emissions, the vast array of other engineering variables aren't important at all, you're right, and comparing the Raptor to a smoky leaf blower that burns about as clean as your ass is just childish.
1vdn992 2 months ago
@1vdn992 i know a bunch of peeps getting close to 30mpg's on the highway in both of those rad cars.
dickcheese663 2 months ago
How much did ford pay you?
DIPSH1TLOSER 2 months ago
The test is seriously flawed. The majority of a car's pollution comes at cold start when the cats and everything else on the car is cold and inefficient.
TJPark01 2 months ago
Unless someone understands the concept of ppm readings, this test is completely misleading. The V8 raptor can me a more refined engine, but still produces a grater total amount of emissions than a significantly smaller engine. eg what you find in the fiat 500.

i give a redneck 4 hours to make a raptor leaf blower
EpiclyLost 2 months ago
What a deceiving and biased test. Sure, the leaf blowers had poor emissions but there's no catalytic converter. Also, why does the test not mention CO2, ohhh, because obviously the FIAT did much better than the 6.2L Ford, and that would mean results that InsideLine didn't want to post about...
EngineeringExplained 2 months ago 27
@EngineeringExplained they actually posted the numbers @2:23
toofast907 2 months ago
@toofast907 Yes, they post the numbers, but they fail to include the largest part of emissions - CO2. Also, units would be nice. 0.276 doesn't mean anything without units.
EngineeringExplained 2 months ago
@EngineeringExplained how about you go test it for yourself and make your own youtube channel and you can then post the CO2 results to satisfy yourself.....
TeamEpsilonRacing 2 months ago
@TeamEpsilonRacing Or InsideLine could post them, as I'm sure they have the figures. I do have my own channel; it's educational to teach people about cars who have an interest and want some easy to follow explanations about them. Though I don't have the equipment nor the cars to do this test on my own. Ford has done a great job of improving their emissions, but this is the wrong way of presenting it.
EngineeringExplained 2 months ago
@EngineeringExplained Are you serious? That would be like if we had two cars and we were doing a power test to see which has more power and when mine wins you say it's a biased test because I have a supercharger.
Just because you can explain why the one that wins wins doesn't mean it's no longer a fair test. I mean, it's not like this is a test of skill or anything.
thekkl 2 months ago
@thekkl Perhaps you should learn up a little bit on combustion. InsideLine is claiming that the 6.2L has better emissions than the Fiat's engine which is more than 4 times smaller. Put fuel in, get CO2 and H2O out. That's the basics. The more fuel you burn, the more emissions you have. Now are you going to tell me that an engine 4 times larger burns less fuel? No. Ford did a great job, but don't think you're saving the planet by driving a 6.2L truck...
EngineeringExplained 2 months ago
@EngineeringExplained You can save the planet by buying diesel because it takes less fuel to make diesel. So much less that if you own a prius you are doing more harm to the environment than someone in a diesel.
theonlylolking 2 months ago
What a stupid test! Why not make it equal and take out the catalytic convertors in the car and truck? You're also comparing 2 strokes to 4 stroke motors.

MustanGT2003 2 months ago

GeckoMoria94 2 months ago
leaf blowers have no filters of co2 or something like that and emission of co2 is bigger than in smal fiat Im sure that after 2 years ford will have much bigger emission because of big engine

Still a piece of shit in the open, and the drivers.
Just sayn
dirtykkkoon 2 months ago
If they were to add Direct Injection to the 6.2 it would be even cleaner AND have less start-up emissions which is where the majority of bad stuff comes from...at start up.
2003SCT 2 months ago
I think the same comparison used to made with motorcycles (almost none of which had emissions equipment on them per usual) vs. a car with a catalytic converter. The assumption was that a bike with a tiny motor would be much better for the environment than say a car...but the inverse was true...bikes esp. 2 strokes are quite dirty and much larger displacement than something like a leaf blower. It was just a comparo to show how clean cars are now and how surprisingly dirty some things can be.
2003SCT 2 months ago 2
this whole "lbs per mile" emissions thing is a JOKE, what does that even mean!?.. its all made up non sense to get us spending more money we DONT HAVE on crap like electric/ hybrid cars
cb7pwn 2 months ago
@cb7pwn Yeah lbs per mile sounds pretty dumb. lbs is a weight unit, not a mass unit.
Grams per mile or grams per kilometer sound better. It is used as a unit for the total mass of the smog emitted from the vehicle every mile.
Hybrid cars are a bigger hazard to the environment than any gasoline engine can possibly be.
wildbloodydragon 2 months ago
2-Stroke FTW.
newengland72 2 months ago
The 500 throws out marginally more NMHC and NOx but a whole lot less carbon monoxide, which is way more toxic. How can you say that "overall" the Raptor is less polluting than the 500?

No seriously ! a 2 strock engine pollute more than a 4 strock engines!wow! not to mention that the cars has catalytic exausths where the leafblower does not The CO/CO2 and NOx emission that matters when it comes to polution yet you compare NMHC???! So what you want to say is that Ford raptor is a clean car, is that the conclusion you are trying to get? No seriously!
