At least Killing Joke get paid when their songs are introduced to a wider audience. By Metallica covering Discharge, Diamond Head, Mercyful Fate & the Joke they’ve earned these bands some money as well.
@rp61wasinnocentok fairly unkind tirade at a bloke who was just asking for opinions. thats the trouble with the net, people hide behind their keyboards. if you wouldnt say it in person, dont say it online
I can't see anything remotely to what you've said. I wish people would actually point out stuff when they mention something like this instead of making people having search for something that isn't there.
Hide behind a keyboard? Not me, i'll say it to your face anytime, just name the place and time.
@rp61wasinnocentok i dunno i cant find the fuck but you were being fairly unkind, or there again, if you werent, take it from me i didna mean it. as for time n place, well i live in katoomba
@soukous70 INXS started in 77. Killing Joke in 78. INXS started as one of the many Australian Punk/New Wave acts, along with artists like The Moodists, The Saints, and The Boys Next Door. It wasn't until they released their second album that their sound changed to a more commercially accessible style. Even then songs like Don't Change, and Just Keep Walking were still very grounded in the artsy side of the scene.
I rmember hearing this at a party the week it came out. Didn;t understand it but it played all night and scared the bejesus out of me. Still sounds amazing. Such discipline and brutality, those turnaround drums fills are strokes of genius. The riff was possibly nicked from War's 'Me and Baby Brother" ... So many bands have taken this and run with it, but none every scared me morally like KJ.
@rp61wasinnocentok Windows Movie Maker?!?! I'm highly impressed!!! Me, at 43 years old, not only was I listening to Killing Joke back in the 80's, I was "living" the era... in NYC, it was hard to escape it! Bravo for a job well done!

@cwphunky68 I totally agree. I mean ok that eighties song may be about... the eighties but the subject and the message of the song are still very relevant!
just got bored n browsed 4 "joke" or something, n i ended up here..lol, took me a while to realize that "killing joke" is a band/watever, well t music's not bad

Any complete geeks out there who could tell me what sort of reverb they are using on the snare at 0:18? I fucking love that sound, its intense! Can't tell if its a spring or a plate, could be the spring verb in a Roland RE-201? (sounds like they use on of these on the vocals....) Wonder what they were smoking when they thought of putting those sounds to tape, very haunting....great contrast to the funking grooves of this tune...is this the one note riff that they first jammed when they formed??
I seem to recall an interview with them in a 80's UK music tech magazine and the Roland 'Space Echo' being mentioned. As for what they were smoking, I think Mr. Coleman's mind just works in weird ways without the aid of any chemical stimulants whatsoever. Oh, and here's a question for the KJ obsessives out there. I've got a single by a seventies Irish band called 4 Be 2, where the bassist is credited as one "Martin 'Pig Youth' Glover", any relation?
4 Be 2 with Jimmy Lydon!!, oh my!!, I have an old 45 single of them doing "Silent Night". I have have not thought of them in 28ish years. Thanks for bringing back memories of my youth at the Continental in Buffalo
Do you remember what metal meant at the time this song was released? I doubt Killing Joke would have wanted anything to do with that category in the early 80s. Today, the meaning has expanded, but back then it sort of meant hard rock with roots in 70s stadium rock.
Such fine stuff!! I do love the Spiral Tribe remixes of this fine tune as well. Would any of you nice folks care to post them? Some shitty heroin addict stole mine and sold them to put a "glass dick" in his mouth.
This version on the new Killing Joke, peel sessions cd, is out of this world. Full blast in the car..drowning out all the rapshite music fans in theirs.
He he.. Brilliant!
Saw em at Forum on the 04/10/08,they still are the most powerful live band on the planet
I love this track-1980 but it's so up to date- it's full of the happy energy of youth- I hope the play it live on saturday night 4th Oct in London- Pandemonium and singles- I think it was a single but then again they had many singles- it could be a long night- hopefully...
The best Killing Joke concert I've ever seen...I was at the front left of stage- the band were on top form and the audience lapped it up- great night...
My first song I ever heard from KJ on WHFS Dc area 1984. Went out and bought their first album that very day. This and Requiem changed my world. - Andy Zook
Yeah, I was there too in Trafalgar Square with my mate, we were 14 year old scruffy little punks. Like you say, I've never forgotten it. best KJ song for me this one, and sounds as good now. Looking forward to seeing them later this year in London
The real shit! Can't wait to see the joke in Berlin in September. Hopefully they'll play that tune too, on the 1st evening - regards to all gatherers!!!
im 47, still listen to these...and this was my favourite track to dance to...what a top band,,,they should make a comeback

I TOTALLY disagree, that band don't sound anything like Killing Joke,
even with the happy twist on board.
The comparison is laughable...
I also disagree with your comment about KJ not being appreciated.
Maybe around the time of their first few years as a band,
but I think even that may be debatable.
But certainly in the last 10-15 years, they've been sited by many as one of THE major bands to have had influencial qualities.
And quite right too,
they're in a league of their own...

I love this track-1980 but it's so up to date- it's full of the happy energy of youth- I hope the play it live on saturday night 4th Oct in London- Pandemonium and singles- I think it was a single but then again they had many singles- it could be a long night- hopefully...

My first song I ever heard from KJ on WHFS Dc area 1984. Went out and bought their first album that very day. This and Requiem changed my world. - Andy Zook

I bought this on 12 inch and Unknown Pleasures on the same day back in 1980 and they both sound as good today :)

Yeah, I was there too in Trafalgar Square with my mate, we were 14 year old scruffy little punks. Like you say, I've never forgotten it. best KJ song for me this one, and sounds as good now. Looking forward to seeing them later this year in London
