As far as I know John (and myself) are the only two folks using it at the moment. John invented it as far as I know. It may look wacky but the middle four string intervals are the same as a bouzouki (DGDADA if you are capoed at the 3rd fret. If you look at it that way, it gets easier.
Well, it should get your started. It is a modal tuning. Think less in terms of full chords and more in terms of scales, root notes and melodic lines. Most of what John is doing here is very simple, one or two finger stuff. It is a very easy tuning once you have the hang of it, but very versatile for trad music (strumming, fingerstyle and flatpicking tunes).
