@cait72590 It's most likely a a breeding facility. The babies are taken away from the mother so that she doesn't accidentally crush them. Since most pandas are artificially inseminated and raised by humans they usually don't know what to do with a newborn.

3 Reasons you can't have Panda as a pet:

1. They are endangered species and hard to find, all known pandas in North America are in the zoo.

2. If you happen to find a homeless panda somewhere (smaller chance than winning the jackpot), there will be no way to breed next generation only if your neighbor was lucky as you and it happens to be an opposite sex and similar maturity.

3. Let's grow bamboo in the backyard, only if you have a big yard.

Have a dog or cat is much easier.

Even with all those conditions, the panda breeding habits are insane. There is only one chance to inseminate a panda which only happens like once a year. Then you have to have special conditions after the panda baby is born. You have to have special milk, keep the baby at the right temperature, and also protect it from being squished by the mother. After all that, you have to make sure the mother won't reject the baby. That's why they are endangered.

Agreed, the cute little ones are so fragile, I hope there are more of them so that we can at least have pandas in all the zoo. I know this may sound inhumane, but let's face it, pandas can hardly survive in the wild as their natural habitual territories are less and less suitable for them now. Even adult pandas need consistent care, yet people would catch or kill them due to its rarity. I bet they worth more than a lot of other endangered animals in the black market. I wish they can be cloned:)

99gypsies, this probably isn't their actual enclosure. Animals are taken to other cages just to feed sometimes, especially the babies. I'm assuming they don't have their mother to do it for them, otherwise they'd just feed in the enclosure. I don't think any zoo would actually let animals live in a cement floored cage.

You'd think so, but zoos & circuses hv a history of abusing animals. (As do pet stores, puppy mills, etc. Watch the Dog Whisperer). I went to the Bronx Zoo in NY, & was deeply upset by the cruelty. Gorillas in small cages, looking so sad; cheetas--animals made to run--penned up where they couldnt even get speed (they run 70 MPH & pick up speed faster than Corvettes & Ferraris); large snakes in cages like milk crates, their whole lives. The National Zoo in Washington DC is much better.
