That was great! I was 8 in 1978 and we did something very similar with the stream at the end of the street. We built a dam and when the water backed up high enough we could go swimming. We spent entire summers on Long Island doing that but now I am in the Midwest and there are not many streams like that one.
Unfortunately, the places for children to play and just be children are getting fewer and fewer. I don't think organized sports will ever be a good substitute for spontaneous play.
