Is that a bit of jealousy I detect Mathew Klees. Of course its surfing. Its just a different form of it.He doesn't NEED a mechanical device mounted on his board he's just prepared to try different things. He could probably surf on a park bench. The man is a true waterman and deserves a bit of respect
What an asinine comment. I think you are pissed he gets to surf for a living. If people are willing to pay him for good for him. By your logic any professional athlete should get a "real" job. Good call.
Although I respect his ability,Why doesn't he just get a real job ? Oh nevermind thats too hard. He reminds me of Lance Armstrong who Howard Stern said so well of ... "How could someone possibly make a living riding a bike ?" Oh thats right he's selling "Live Strong" yellow wrist bands and tee shirts too and taking the tax payers US Postal Sponsership money ... And Laired's "Laired Board" ? C'mon Dude ... Thats not really surfing if you need a mechanical device mounted to your surf board !
@MatthewKlees ..... you must not know much about surfing. hes one of the most revered surfers of all time. he should be compensated for the time he's put into the sport and the waves he's pioneered. your cynical bullshit isnt welcome
@slapthecheeta Dude,I never questioned his ability, Yes he one of the greatest surfers but don't be naive ... Realistically how can you possibly justify that as actually surfing ? its not when your being assisted by a device ! ... Oh ok lets just throw similier devices on skate boards, mountain bikes and figure skates etc ... The point is ... Yes, its very ingenious designed board ... but he's not handicapped, he still has many years of surfing left in him ! And he's not an athlete so just stop
@MatthewKlees so you have to be handicapped to create something innovative? its just a new way to ride a board man, im not sure what your bitching about.
@MandolinCafe I agree anyone can tow into waves where did i say otherwise? I have no need to prove my words they are being proved constantly. And what about Laird? I said good for him for making and trying something like this. But he isn't a world class surfer like twiggy or jordy. Actually I wonder where you think you get the credentials to talk? You surfed anything over 10' measured from back of wave? Not those girly 4' fun day waves...
@ShortSurferBoy Did you say Laird isn't a world class surfer ? What world are you referring to? Seriously ? You don't think Laird is a world class surfer? Maybe your right, maybe he is in a class yet to be defined can you say universal cass, extra terrestrial, galactic, inhuman, the guy is a modern day tarzan that wants to ride the biggest waves in the world. Not to mention he rips all sizes and his pedigree is all but royal.
Anyone who says Laird Hamilton is not a world class surfer is like saying Reinhold Messner is not a true mountaineer. Hamilton surfs waves that would chew, bend fold spindle and mutilate most surfers...he fucking INVENTED tow surfing fer fuck sake.......
ive been bodyboarding for 3 weeks and i went out to salt creek today and this one guy said the waves are suppposed to be like french polenesian waves and i didnt know what that meant....now i do
tje foil is too long- he needs a front foil and a rear foil that drop no more than 1' below the board. that contraption he is riding is all wrong. .a smaller front foil with the fins cambered for lift while the rear foil would use rubber type foils which are flexible and can be steered with. and you could put them on a regular size board. it would increase the speed but not sacrifice manueverability.
@nootaramus A close variant of that design was tried and failed to work. No control. Also the turbulence/cavitation of the leading foil made the trailing foil worse than useless. Nice idea though.
All this footage is taken from the DVD "To' : Day of Days". I don't know where they dug up the narrator though - he's not on the DVD. And I don't think that guy has ever even been near the ocean: "...impossible to start on the biggest waves by ROWING" ... towsurfing invented in the "early 80s" WTF?!
@MandolinCafe Clearly you know very little about surfing and ocean. How is Laird lazy when he obviously catches some of the heaviest waves on the planet while you haven't caught a 10 foot wave in your life?. You are probably a stupid troll and I'm taking a bite but I would like to see what a stupid troll has to say.
@MandolinCafe Big waves dont move faster? your an idiot, its about the power of the wave and the momentum it carries, if they didnt move faster there would be no need to tow in no would there? you dumbass, your insulting one of the biggest pioneers in surfing!
That is why none of the pros use tow in anymore, because it isn't needed haha, you should actually follow the sport more you know ;) I don't mean only watching competitions, but also reading up on the newest thing, what people are doing etc..
@ShortSurferBoy Really? I saw tow-ins at Teeahupoo and Maverick's just this last year, and it IS impossible to surf Pe'ahi (a.k.a. Jaws) without tow-ins. You HAVE to tow-in there because otherwise it is suicide. The surf will slam you into the rocky beach, either seriously injuring or killing you so you need a J-ski there. The Strapped Crew invented the foil board so you can surf Pe'ahi when the wind would otherwise make it otherwise impossible with the chop.
@MandolinCafe It is the suck that actually is the problem in big waves, if you ever rode one you would have said it was... And yes, the equipment is sufficient to ride big waves, he says 30' + waves are impossible? Twiggy won the XXL with a wave in excess of 50' IIRC... 20' more than what this guy says is possible.
The suck has caused some problems with waves though in that getting rid of the suck in the pocket then on way to shoulder getting a triple suck is like a triple f you all considered
@MandolinCafe I'd like to see you paddle into Pe'ahi when sets are 25-50 feet on the face or Cortes Banks when the waves are 40 to +70 feet on the face. Come back call someone lazy when you have video of you paddling into those monsters.
@panetrain Twiggy has, look him up ;) most pro riders are pushing the limits of paddle surfing. If you don't think 40+ is possible, check out the XXL awards for paddle and tow in.
"Shawn Dollar officially surfed into the record books for riding a paddle-in wave judged to be 55ft+ (17m) to win the Monster Paddle Award. " Taken from the award site. that to me sounds like oh I don't know... bigger than 40 ft...
could you ride an open ocean swell with that? I wonder how far you could go. It looks like once you reach the speed of the wave then you can let go. I wonder if the same concept could be applied to transportation? if you could transport a person from point A to Point B could you make one large enough to carry a few people?
No, I mean a hydrofoil that is not gas powered. One large enough like a ferry that can ride the energy of the wave itself. Could you catch a wave and ride it from continent to continent? Or would it be to chaotic in the open ocean?
@PukkPukk Check out "Step Into Liquid" and watch them use the foilboard on waves 100 miles off the California coast at Cortes Bank. They were riding +60 footers and that was with *2nd gen* foilboards in '01-'02. New boards have wider foils, are designed specifically for foilsurfing (not just surfboards with a foil attached), and are easier to ride/control now. Eliminates surface effects such as chop and wind. Easier on your knees and legs, i.e. you can ride more sets.
Laird got fucked up prretty good on his foil....he hit some kelp and folded his foot in half.

"Home-made aerofoil"?? Do you make this stuff up??
Thats not "home-made".... it's a SkySki foil. And it's a "hydrofoil".... as in water, not air. Only about 1/700th of the size.
The patents go back to the 1960s. Remember Banana George doing ski shows on stand up foils 30 yrs ago??
Laird is the man though. Doin it in big surf takes balls that clank!
