It's criminal how short of time this group was together. John Phillips was possibly the best song writer of our time. Denny's voice was a once in a life time. What a waste that they fell apart.
Guys, I think this *is* the finished product. I don't know if the studio chatter was rehearsed or not, but either way, they liked it and kept it in the song. This IS the final product. It is a finished song. There's no "real" version out there minus the chatter, this is it.
@tygersflowerz I always felt the "chatter" was rehearsed ~ but of course, who really knows for sure - maybe Michelle could shed some light on a question like that.
I very much agree with many commentors, that Cass's voice was astounding, angelic and moving! Her charismatic personality, her dance moves, her amazing and seemingly effortless vocals just makes her loveable, and I can say that she is my all time favorite female singer. Thanks for posting this recording! Great song, and as others have said, an excellent illustration of their beautiful harmony and talent.
She was just an amazingly, amazingly talented woman...voice of an angel. I wish I could look into an alternate reality where she didn't die, I'm sure I would be looking at a superstar in every sense of the word...ahhh...man, her voice give me chills down my spine...best female singing voice I have ever heard, or ever will hear, I'm sure!
It's Cass that John says comes back in late before she says "I was right with you". It's fantastic though, it shows the tension within the group better than any documentary or book ever could.
@Danniidude No, it was Michelle. John usually bullied her in the studio. The irony is, this is one of Michelle's most beautiful songs with the group. And that high C she hits when they sing in unison. YOWZA! It's gorgeous!
The funny thing is that I think this song also features some of Michelle's best vocals, too. Yes, there's the little bit between John and Michelle, but WOW, does Michelle ever NAIL that high C!
I recently got thier greatest hits and loved it. It's really like nothing else. But I couldn't get this song out of my mind - so beautiful and so haunting. And I always find there's a lump in my front as you hear her singing "My Friend, My Friend" at the end.
I actually find this song to be a gem just like "Dream a Little Dream of Me". Cass was treated horrible by John. It's also talked in her book "Dream a Little Dream of Me: The Life of Cass Elliot". I mean John should've treated her good! I know Cass quit the group because John had said something offensive to her and she stormed out, but what if Cass wasn't contractually bound to their next LP? That seriously would've hurt the group and it wouldn't have been the same without Cass's harmonies!
I might get a little bashed by the other fans, but I say that this is their best song! Love it all: Cass is voice is from another world, the rhythm, the drum intro, the lyrics, the backing vocals... These things combined create like an atmosphere, this song makes me feel like I´m dreaming with my eyes open!
What a beautifully done video to compliment the explosive and wide range of Cass' singing ability. This songs gives me chills and makes me feel all warm at the exact same time. Every time I hear it, it's just as powerful as when I heard it the first time!
I find Cass voice exceptionally soothing and...ahh I could go on for years! I first discovered The Mamas and The Papas about 8 years ago when I was 14 years old...I've been in love ever since! <3
I loved this lp when it came out and thought this song was as good as Dream a Little Dream. They were already broken -up by the time The Papas and The Mamas was released (unbeknownst to us fans) so of course Dunhill never pushed it and was busy promoting Cass' new solo career. Although this was a very labored album to make (they were fighting and getting high so much) the tracks are under-rated and the blend of Denny and Cass's golden voices was never better.
Yes, Papas&Mamas i think is even their best work at all... Yes, it was very laborated and quality of sound that they made on this album is phenomenal!
Most definitely, the The Papas And The Mamas album was where the Mamas And The Papas were at their peak, and how ironic that it would essentially be their last because the 1971 People Like us album was nothing more than their "contractual obligation" album and consequently lacked the soul of their previous 4 albums.
In retrospect, I believe that John included the talking bit where Michelle claims to not be late but really is, and then she tries to count the song back in but nobody pays attention just to embarrass her.
Kind of like when he "made" Michelle and Denny sing "I Saw Her Again" after he found out about their affair. John said on PBS (with a laugh) that it was his way of getting revenge.
Hi! Thanks for comment, but isn't that was a great idea??? Of cause it was shame to sing that kind of songs, for Denny and Michelle when they knew about it :)
Hi, Jillifer24--You mean the coming-in-late part? No, that was definitely Michelle. She and Cass had very different speaking voices. If you have the Mamas and the Papas version of "Dancing In The Street," you can hear Cass and Denny talking at the end of the song.
I wasn't aware that this was a rehearsal? I thought that they released it with Cass and John arguing included. As much as I love this song I think it shows all the tension that was in the group at this point.
You're correct, this is the regular version from the album 'The Papas and the Mamas', but it's John and Michelle arguing, not Cass (Cass is the one who says "You like that, Lou?", however).
Thanks for telling me I always thought Cass's voice sounded weird with the "I was right with you". Don't know why it never occurred to me it was Michelle, lol.
Amazing. I was also 13 in 1976 when my mom brought Mamas and Papas record into our house. Funny, I did not want to listen to them at first. Then, when I did they started a fire in my heart also. The Mamas and Papas have stayed with me all these years. But your videos are just so great. I am just an art-appreciator but you are going to be an important person in the arts. Every music fan is proud of your YouTube art. Keep on looking for what YOU love.
Mr C you are such a treasure for making these artful videos. Is it true that you are (only) 13 yrs old? If so then you are on the road to a brilliant career of your own making, much like the musicians you pay tribute to in your work on YouTube.

One of my fave Cass Songs, just majestic.
And the rehearsal chatter was a bonus :)
Cass & Denny were the singers that made the M&P great

Agreed 100%!The fact of the matter was that Cass and John's personalities often clashed because one was as bull-headed as the other!
