  • I fuckin disagree

  • ALOT of people obviously don't own/ have never played with an Atari 5200 controller before because I've had mine for quite some time and I have two WORKING controllers that work quite well, and I play the system almost every day. Suck on that 5200 haters.

  • 80 Vectrex enthusiastgot butthurt and disliked this.... - _ -

  • Movie Maker! Editing! Get Shit! DANANANANANA...

  • @OrangeBreaker I know but the NES is tolerable (it also has a toploader) the thing is: you can fit 2 non-Toploader NES in that CD-i Bastard and the 5200 has a controller that is bigger than the NES

  • it's like the ipad of the 90's way too big

  • It was designed large so the customer could fit his\her boot in it!

  • The Atari 5200 was FUCKING HUGE !!! And the Phillips CD-i was even bigger. WHY NEED SO MANY PARTS ?!?

  • @DoodleMongoLP it was an old console the NES was huge also

  • Everyone knows it´s horrible but I love Berzerk on atari 2500

  • Oh, and the keypad was actually useful for a lot of the games; Sports games and Star Raiders come to mind. Our track ball never went bad. It wasn't really useful for most of the games, but it made Centipede a hell of a lot easier to play.

  • Other than the controller I have no complaints about the 5200. We only had the controllers replaced once and my system still works.

  • My controls broke in a few months , I fixed them myself.I was only in 4th grade.

They did suck though. ( DEFENDER)......

  • This thing was fucking huge!!

  • 73 people who disliked this are Members Of ATARI OF DOOM

  • I bet you $5, if they were around this era of the Atari 5200, I bet they wouldn't talk so much shit on it.

  • @xxlonleyemoboyxx Yup...Kiddies will never get it..That little leap in grafics at the time was huge...That system almost has as much power as the orginal nintendo that come out years later...Pokey chip that emulated human voices..First analog 360 degree controllers on a home game system...Even know they were a nightmare... what really happend was the video game collapse in the 1980's...5200 would of got alot better if it was giving time to develop games for it.

  • its rasputia lol

  • why do you both sound like hicks?

  • Lol I noticed that they can only make videos longer than 8 minutes. That last part was to make the vid long enough to reach that limit

  • I think I despise these guys' annoying videos. They couldn't be more wrong about the 5200: YES, the controllers are AWFUL, but the console itself is actually pretty good, featuring some pretty rockin' arcade ports and many other wonderful games. Hell, Realsports Baseball is one of the best old-school baseball video games. Lookit, bad controllers do not equal a totally bad system. BAD GAMES and sometimes bad everything else makes a bad system. This is why the CD-I is somewhat ill remembered.

  • 2:15 Sega Genesis :)

  • A kid up the street had a 5200 and thought he was the shit.

  • Comment removed

  • You know what's ridiculous? The 5200's ridiculous RF-switch box/power adapter thingy was replaced by a traditional hook up process, right? If they could alter the WHOLE DAMN CONSOLE (even removing two controller ports!), then don't you think they could have fixed the DAMN CONTROLLERS? The console would've cost MORE to alter! And also, you two don't know shit about the 7800. The 2600 and 5200 were dying in 1984, and so they took all the suggestions from customers, and made a better console!

  • LOL, this console actually killed people

  • Now that I have an xbox that barely leaves room for my wii in my tv stand, I understand how big this is.

  • i had a 5200. i miss it.

  • @Venturi01 It was a pretty good little system, wasn't it? I just wish you could plug in Genesis controllers into that sucker.

  • Comment removed

  • There is no #8

  • I actually have one, with 95 games in my closet, STILL works :) !!!

  • @VinnieGazzara Yes but do the controllers still work?

  • @Luigi84289 .....I have had to take them apart a few times and kinda refurbish them ... I also have the trackball ...everything works !! :)

  • These guys are morons.

  • i'm so glad i wasn't even born yet by the time this piece of shit was released.

  • No top comment? Okay, now's my chance.(:

  • The great atari fires! lol

  • this guys need to shut up because it was made to create a better image!!!!!!! It was just another image of a console!!!!!!!!

  • If you think the Atari 5200 was good, go tell that to AVGN lol.

  • Plus it didn't have the super cool rap commercial when rap was brand new.

    The fun is back!

    Oh, yessiree.

    It's the twenty-six hundred

    from uh-tar-ee.

  • 'Dooshebag' is a very appropriate alias, or was it Gooch playing the guitar at the end?

  • @caiphnaraya It was The Dooshebag.

  • This was my system for 3 years. I had asked for a 2600 and this is what I got. Yeah, not many games. At the time though.. the fact that they looked way better than any other console was a big plus. The number pad was very important for Star Raiders, which sucked ass on the 26 but was awesome on the 52. The analog stick was a huge step up. As stated the trigger buttons were crap and I had to take mine apart several times to fix. In the end only one worked.

  • Here's something I want to know about the 5200. What is that door thing on the system for?!

  • . . . . . . a beer case

  • please buy normal microphone!

  • I remember seeing this in stores back then and thought why would I want this if my 2600 still works fine. Never gave it a second thought, until I wanted to play super Mario brothers so asked my parents for a nes.

  • most Nintendo and Sega systems were not backwards compatible and no one complained about that. The backwards compatibility argument is week and pointless to bring up. All in all the 5200 was a very powerful system (more power than Colecovision) but was released right before the video game crash. Of course it failed. All game systems of that era failed. However the controllers were horribly unreliable.

  • what an action ;)

  • The Atari 5200 was an excellent game system for it's time. Neither of you have a clue what you're talking about.

  • @BigFreddieStyle actually it was shit even when it hit my big bros dorrstep, he said it was so bad that he took a shit on it

  • @aidanplastation3

That just means your brother has problems controlling his bowels.

  • @dunnono00 yes thats is true. But its still shit

  • @BigFreddieStyle Fail...

  • @BigFreddieStyle Than why did it fail completely in lifespan, controller design AND games.

  • OMG, 8 minutes guys? This was made 2 years ago.... hopefully you have lives now.

  • I like your vids keep up the good work

  • You didn't talk about the man responsible for this travesty? It was Jack Trammel, the guy who bought Atari from Noel Bushnell. Apparently when Bushnell was working on the 5200, he sold Atari to Time Warner (or it got bought of by TW, I don't know the details) and Jack Decided not to do anything with it until years later when NES was popular and he wanted to get back in the game. So he shipped them out in hopes on getting some cash out of them.

    Noel Bushnel's Atari FTW!

    Time Warner's Atari WTF?

  • Its big cuz it uses cartridges plus the part were your comparing it to a 1980s console to a 2004

  • @addictedtorc

It was big for its time aswell. Consoles haven't gotten any smaller.

  • @addictedtorc Half the console is nothing but empty storage space. Open the back flap and you can see just how much of the 5200 was unnecessary. I guess the developers wanted you to store your game library in the console?

  • @Luigi84289 It was for the controllers, like every other system at that time.

  • @CODMarioWarfare Yeah but in say the intellivision and colecovision the controller spots are incorporated into the console in such a way that it doesn't really increase either console's over all size. They sit on top of the internal components.

  • @addictedtorc:

wtf, super nintendo, 2600, gameboy... they all used cartridges and theyre super small dude. its not an excuse at all to make such a monstrosity.

  • @addictedtorc 2001 actually

  • @addictedtorc are you joking? the 2600jr used carts and it was TINY

  • @addictedtorc There comparing it to a xbox because that beast was also massive! and it STILL was bigger!

  • Seriously...nothing is as fun as listening to obnoxious, misinformed people trying to be condescendingly funny.

"WHY" would they release a newer system when the 2600 (10 years old) is still selling??? "yes....GOoch...it DEFIED ALL LOGIC!!!??!"

    Unreal.

  • Yeah....now WHY would anyone want to have the same game...just because one looks and sounds like the arcade version...and one is make of low-res blocks, flickers, and lacks many of the features/screens/levels???

Sad....these reviewers think bad jokes can cover their ignorance...

  • 5200 was based on their Atari 8-bit computers, and the games were cross compatible. but the unit was stuck using cartridges and marketed for shit.

  • @MsHUGSaLOT What do you mean, "stuck using cartridges"? All systems at that time used cartridges. It was marketed as a high-end system - look at the ads on YouTube. While the 5200 was based on the 8bit computers, it was altered so it was not really directly compatible with the computer line. Its games are similar if not identical, but they are not directly compatible; you can't play games from the computer on the 5200 or vice versa, beyond the obvious physical difference in the cartridges.

  • i love this system... ok i haven't played it ever.

  • It's Fucking Checkers. lol

  • you know you can play atari 2600 on the atari 7800

  • @laughingduck1000 Yup. And you can play 2600 on 5200 if you have the adapter unit that Atari made, which plugs into the 5200's cartridge port. It won't work with some 5200s that have four controller ports unless it has been modified internally.

  • what he says at 4:31 cracks me up so badly.

  • its not bad its a classic

  • Out of a game library of about 90 games 54 were just releases of 2600 games with just graphic upgrades

  • Comparing TrackBall to NES... "su**s monkey balls... shitty console", critique to the switch-box... hmmmm... where have I heard that before???

  • This console was released with the same mindset that lead to the videogame crash shortly before. There was a videogame crash for a reason. Also there will be another videogame crash for a reason. That reason is happening now. (In case you were having trouble, that reason was and is again DICKING OVER THE CUSTOMERS.") Have fun!

  • It's fucking checkers....LOL

  • You baddy

  • sorry dipshit, you can't play the guitar. better not show your faces again, it was all peaceful until now.

  • The 5200 would have been a decent system if not for the horrible controllers. Oh, and the fire-starting power adapter.

  • @jae683 Graphics wise, it was a great system. It wasn't nicknamed the "Home Arcade" for nothing. This guy (like AVGN also) is just biased against vintage gaming IMO. Anyway, unfortunately the 5200's controllers were shitty (although they fixed them in later releases) & there weren't enough games. I have 1 I bought back in '01. Controllers are shot. I just play emulators now, which are cool because I have EVERY game including prototypes & home brewed games.

  • @gjc82071

No...if you listen to this guys review's...he just doesn't know a lot about these classic consoles....they just try to hide it with bad jokes ;-)

It's a bit sad because a lot of what they say is misleading if not outright erroneous.

  • @datacipher You couldn't have said it any better. Ever hear the saying "Everyone's a critic", hehehe. I can tell you from experience, The Atari 2600 owning kid, who woke on Xmas morning & found an Atari 5200 under the tree, was a very happy camper. I still remember that experience from 29yrs ago. BTW, are you @ all into retro gaming, especially emulators? I'm always looking for new people to play online/Kaillera Client. I like MAME, S/NES & N64, all Atari 8-bits & C64 (for online gaming).

  • Most (if not all) Atari 5200 games were released for the Atari 800 computer as well, and they were almost identical. The Atari 800 also had many more good games which were not on the 5200 (e.g. Arkanoid, Commando, Laser Gates, Barbarian, Xevious, Battlezone, Donkey Kong...), non-gaming programs, and decent controllers.

Obviously the 800 cost more than the 5200 but I think it was worth it.

  • I loved my 5200. It had REAL pac-man and not that whatever it was on the 2600 that shared the same name. Controllers were crap though. I had the 4 port version too and my house never burned down.

  • what do you mean i just thought it looked like the atari logo ,you dont think so?

  • so is fire in the picture of the burning white house at 3:16 been photoshoped to look like the atari symbol on purpose, or did you just find a photo of a house fire that looks like the atari symbol?or is it just a huge coincidence?

  • @bulletproof2353 Did you just ask that?

  • no atari should be in the top 10 worst consoles

  • I know the controllers don't work but watch the video "How to Fix Your Atari 5200 Controller for FREE!" and the 5200 wll work!

  • i loved it back in the day. still do

  • That bad, huh. I remember wanting one of these things bad in '83. That was the year Superman3 came out, DC comics had this contest - winner got a 5200, so I sent out dozens of entries. Didn't win of course, but I did get some Superman posters, so it wasn't that bad.

  • 2:24 IT'S FUCKING CHECKERS LOL

  • Dooshe ROCKS OUT HARDCORE!!!

  • Revisionist history like this fucking sucks. About as bad as fox news. Doushebag is an apt name for this shit.

  • 2600 was still selling even during the crash?! I'm confused.

  • @RocMegamanX just like the ps2 is selling now at a decent pace. Usually the top selling consoles continue to sell for many years after the hardcore move on to the next gen systems. Ofcourse these douchebags know nothing.

  • @BlackCloudBoss

Wait, NEW PS2s are still selling? How is THAT possible? I figured people would see it as outdated technology since the PS3 came out.

  • @BlackCloudBoss

Also, the PS2 only has two controller ports, while the PS3...well, the OLDER PS3s had FOUR, thus eliminating the need to burn more money on a Multi-tap.

Why the PS2 only HAD two controller ports and sold like hotcakes, while Gamecube, Dreamcast and Xbox had four each and sold like lead balloons in comparison, I'll never know.

  • @RocMegamanX

Maybe because 2 additional controller ports are ultimately not that big a deal?

  • @dunnono00

They are when there exists four-player games.

  • I'm glad I waited and got the 7800,it still had bad controllers, but I plugged my sega master system controller much better.

  • I loved my 5200 when it came out. Most games came with keypad covers that would give you more button options. Try a Wico controller with the Y connector if you can find one. I did eventually ware out the controller because I played it so much. Do your homework guys on these systems you lack research.

  • The system itself wasn't extremely horrible, but the controller indeed hurt it greatly.

  • Also, the A2600 was proven revenue and the tech was changing in the 80's like lightning. 2 years was a good average for video game systems but they wanted to put out the latest designs AND make money. The hottest market they were actually trying to capture was adding a keyboard and turning their systems into full computers. Atari had it, Intellivision had it and Coleco had it. Coleco actually got it to market but it failed. Learn your history.

  • Damn, just not enough space for your bullshit.

Controllers never tore up. The keypad was for games like Star Raiders. The A2600 had a keypad. It was also used to put plays in Football. Just wasn't enough games to use it. The trackball was for Missle Command and any other game that used it. Damn, please tell me your just joking!

  • Last, before you think I'm some fudged old dude. I was a teen back then and today my favorite is Fallout New Vegas which I've already clocked 60 hours.

Regardless I still stop to play some Coleco or Pacman.

  • Sometimes it's fun but a lot of times it's frustrating to see kids like yourself talk about this crap. I had every system on the market minus the Vectrex and Vic 20.

I find the games I like to play from each system and throw the rest. All is played on various emulators even on my phone. Maybe in todays standards they are the worst just like the Enterprise E is the shit compared to the Enterprise from TOS.

  • Just like wonderfull NES with Mario.

Atari kept improving on it's library and gave better versions of Pacman, Ms. Pacman and the like. The 2600 sucked on many games and fans liked the improvements.

The 5200 was close in hardware to the Atari 600, 800, 1200xl and the like but lacked the keyboard.

Regardless Colecovision was the best, they just failed because ADAM was so buggy.

  • Controller was fine just never centered itself.

    5200 was named for 2600x2 = 5200 Just like A7800 was 5200+2600

Cartridge size was contributed to not being able to use 2600 games. Also address lines and avances in eprom tech. They needed to use the system changer to bridge the gap.

  • I enjoy watching them but I seriously doubt that you ever played a single one of these machines and are just reading a script made by others reviews or opinions.

The 5200 NEVER had fires or power supply problems with their TV adapters. They had some faulty units that died was fixed when they reduced to 2 controller ports instead of 4 fixed most issues. The large size was to store the controllers in the back. As far as the controllers, you got used to them real quick

  • Comment removed

  • The keypads were for overlays, dooshes. You can see the slots where they would clip in.

  • @locos50ae first, I'm not dude, I'm a girl.

    second, look here

    worldofspectrum

THEY ALL PLAY ZX SPECTRUM GAMES!!!

  • @eeklipse

i was talking about atari games don't they look that they are made in paint?

  • Comment removed

  • are those cheap atari games made on paint if yes WTF?

  • The Great Atari Fire, seriously. What drugs are you guys on. The controllers did bite big time though. I still have mine.

  • WTF are Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo fanboys doing in a Atari 5200 Review video? Srsly WTF

  • @xBlackxZerox:

    They're morons, that's why.

  • @xBlackxZerox fangirls too

  • @xBlackxZerox Because they are escaping the Great Atari Flame War. XD

  • i had this growing up, the 5200 had better graphics than the 2600, i know cause i had both, i rather the 5200.

  • Watching this reminds me of PSP Go.

  • Nah this system rocked, I loved mine. Why make another system with better graphics? Iono, go look up the 2600 superman game video lol

  • nah, this system rocked. I loved mine.

  • Will #2 and #1 be up soom? Or are they up?

  • the Atari 7800 was actually pretty damn good....for its time.

  • fire fail

  • This whole system was a bad idea to begin with, especially the Atari 2600 convertor. And do you know what's worse? Sony is mimicing Atari by making an external disc drive that can play PS2 games for their PS3. It makes no sense. Why can't they just add PS2 compatibility via firmware update?

  • @FastTquick : Because Sony want your money.

  • remakes..the only one was good was the 5200 pacman which was far superior than the 2600 version. Atari made the same mistake with the 7800, they were advertising remakes of Pacman, defender and centepede. While Nintendo was blowing kids minds with original titles like Super Mario, Metroid and Zelda.

Now Nintendo is pimping a remade Goldeneye for the Wii.

  • @GTBurns48215

The reason they did that was because of the licensing agreement Nintendo made the developers sign. Nobody could release games for any other system if they wanted to release games for the NES. That left other console makers without any third party support. The FTC should have come down hard on Nintendo for that.

  • We had a 5200 and I loved it. Yes, those controllers were ass when they broke but they did have some nice games. We never had the problem with the black box.

5200 Pacman blew out the 2600 version as well as Star Raiders. They keypad was used in selecting levels when you start the game and for playing more complex games like Star Raiders.

  • No Offence, But I Like The 5200.

Yes, I'm One Of The Few.

  • 2600 hard to hook up? are you fucking kidding me. it talks less than a minute. are you people mentally challenged?

  • @highwaysonyfan87 didnt you here him. IT WAS A FUCKING JOKE YOU AUTISTIC RETARD

  • this is one of the reasons why we dont hear anything from Atari anymore sadly. Too bad they were being cheap assholes why they made the controllers for this system.

Plus WHY THEY HAD TO BUILT THIS CONSOLE SOOO BIG?!

  • @johnnysmoke92

No, the reason why we don't hear anything from Atari anymore is because the Atari that existed then is not the same Atari that exists now. The assets of the old Atari have changed hands many times since the early 90's. And how can you say they were being cheap with the controllers? Those controllers were cutting edge tech back in the early 80's and definitely not cheap. The problem was they were untried so nobody knew how they would hold up.

  • @johnnysmoke92

It wasn't an issue of the tech being bad, it was the contacts inside wearing out that was the problem. You can get rebuild kits now that make them indestructible, so it's not the tech. And the console was big because it had storage for the controllers, which was a great idea for the time because it eliminated cable clutter and protected your controllers from being kicked around and stepped on.

  • Comment removed

  • The converter IS a 2600. Were either of you around in 1982? Were your parents?? The auto switch box was meant to reduce clutter and eliminate the need of having to slide a TV/Game switch. And you're not the only ones to harp on it, but can you find ANY actual instance of the switchbox causing a fire??? Yes, the controller is bad. A Wico solves it - shouldn't have to be that way, but it is today. Keypad - overlays for certain games, duh. Why release systems so soon - what Apple does with iPods.

  • @briguy1971

That's the one I love to debunk, too. They say the switchbox can cause a fire, but it's never been proven. They keep saying it anyway, though.

  • phillips cdi is bigger, lmaosh, watch jamesnintendonerd cdi review part 1.

  • 2:37 that looks like 50 more sega gennises addons sunked in the wires

  • the trak ball controller was bigger then the nes ! wtf?!

  • deathnote poster ftw

  • 1:10, Have you ever wondered what it would look like if an Atari 2600 controller and a Colecovision controller were blended together, well there you go.

  • Lol, love how you put "we didnt start the fire" when you were talking about how its hard to plug in xD G'night!

  • the games were great on this system these reviewers SUCK big time

  • What does FTW mean? does it mean "Fuck the What"? What does it mean?

  • @godzilla964 for the win

  • @godzilla964 It means "For the Win".

  • Love this show is soo funny! ANYWHERE YOU WANT IF THATS THE WAY YOU NEED IT! ANYWHERE YOU WANT IT!

  • just no.

  • Lmao the greedy company! nintendo?

  • yeah... anal-log

  • Death Note FTW

  • what kind of program did u use for making this video? Windows Movie Maker? Need Answer please thnks

  • "Movie maker, editing dipshit"

    That's hilarious

  • Stop Hating on Gooch & Dooshebag. They are decent video game historians. At least all they're facts are accurate. Keep up the good work. But I will say this my favorite videogame system (portable) was and still is my N-Gage by Nokia no matter what anyone says mainly because you can run emulators on it Nes/SNes and Genesis

  • Movie Maker editing - dipshit!!

  • How'd you go from #9 to #7?

  • W.C.O.A.T.#8 is not on your channel

  • Did the 5200 switchbox really seated houses on fire or are you making this up for a joke

  • Comment removed

  • This was not a bad console. The only thing that was wrong with it was the controllers weren't very sturdy. Now though you can get replacement parts to rebuild the controllers so they last almost forever. Size? How about Intellivision for size? The reason the 5200 was so big was because of the storage compartment for the controllers. They also combined the three boards from the Atari 800 computer into one board to make the 5200. There's only a few memory locations that are different between them

  • That's the real reason why it cost so much. Look how much the 800 computer sold for then. $899. It was nearly identical just repackaged in a different case. I used to have floppies with all the 5200 games on them that were modded for the 800. That's how similar they were. Another thing, not everyone had a 2600. Someone new to video games when the 5200 came out might have bought the 5200 instead of the 2600.

  • And why wouldn't Atari make upgraded versions of it's existing licenses for the 5200? They were having to compete with Coleco to acquire new licenses by that time. If you put a 5200 and trackball controlelr next to a Colecovision with their roller controller and disallow for the storage compartment for the controllers on the 5200, they come out being about the same size. Coleco just came up with a more elegant way to store the controllers when not in use.

  • The Colecovision and Intellivision also both had keypads attached to their controllers, and Intellivision had it before the rest so you can't blame Atari for that. If you think it's a bad idea fine, just blame Mattel and not Atari. They were only trying to mimic the versatility of the Intellivision controller.

  • The 2600 also wasn't doing so well then. Atari kept selling the 2600 way beyond it's expiration date. Gamers were ready for superior graphics and sound by the time the 5200 came out. You could see the number of crap games for the 2600 was already beginning to outpace the really good ones because Atari had no quality control over the third party games like Nintendo had later with the NES. The video game crash of 83 could be foreseen by many already.

  • The real mistake Atari made was keeping the 2600 around for more than a brief overlap period after the 5200 was released as it bit into 5200 sales as it continued to fall in price. The 7800 was another story. That one should never have been released at all, neither should the XE game system. Those two were only released to capitalize on the revival of the game craze when the NES hit store shelves because Atari already had the technology and it wouldn't cost much to do.
