Not to defend Don Cherry, but most old people are racism. It's hard to change something, or change an opinion when you've been raised, and when you've lived all your life that way. I'm a Yank and have always liked Don Cherry and wish he was on American TV calling the NHL. Wish we had someone like him for baseball, football and basketball. The closest we had was Joe Morgan (baseball--now fired), John Madden (football--now retired) and Charles Barkley in basketball.

@Spetz You may be unaware, but Canada got a record number of golds for any country throughout history in the Winter Olympics. Russia, on the other hand, did extremely poorly. We both know this. That was one very frightening Flyer team. Even the Canadiens couldnt beat CSKA that year. Sabres beat CSKA 6-1 in 79-80 and Canadiens 4-2 same year. An extremely loaded Oiler team beat them 4-3 in 82-83 (well Soviet National All-Star team).

Russians aren't the biggest divers out there, the biggest diving clips you'll find on youtube is from Canadians actually, not saying that they're big divers overall. And it's Ovechkin by the way...trust me, Cherry has been a hater way before he's ever heard of Ovechkin, it goes back to the Soviet days. His mind hasn't evolved since the cold-war. @Spetz You may be unaware, but Canada got a record number of golds for any country throughout history in the Winter Olympics. Russia, on the other hand, did extremely poorly. There was an article a while back with Putin talking about how ashamed he was of the results, if I remember correctly. I'm still angry that Plushenko didn't get a gold, though.
We are also doing very well in various sports in the current Commonwealth games, which dismisses your comment that we are only good at hockey.

Name the last time a Cdn 50 goal scorer kicked someone with a skate? The difference between Italy in soccer and Canada in hockey is that we don't need to rely just on our defence to win. Btw, we've won alot more in hockey than that of Italy in soccer, by several miles, throw the Brazilans in there too. "Right", like the Euros aren't violent.

Again, you talk about NHL All-Star teams/Team Canadas. The real deal is 75-76 and 79-80. Why bitch? Lemme see. The best Russian teams were from that time. they failed to beat any of the top teams. Lost to Flyers 4-1, Tied Canadiens 3-3 in 75-76. Lost to Canadiens 4-2 and Lost to Sabres 6-1 in 79-80.

What I meant is that I agree with Phil Esposito bashing the commies. For all the efforts Soviet Hockey put into training their young players to be the best, they forgot two things: be tough and be smart for 60 minutes. The Soviets (or CSKA) often got beat by either one (or both of these). Again the 1972 Canadians had only 2 weeks to prepare

Mayne superior to all star teams but not to the best the NHL had to offer. The December 31, 1979 game between CSKA and Montreal Canadiens for example. The Canadiens won 4-2. Remember this was supposed to be the best Soviet team ever and the Canadiens beat them fair and square. The Buffalo Sabres demolished them 6-1 in another game in super series 79-80. Now where the fuck was Tretiak against the NHL powerhouses? No where.I wonder what Tikhonov thought of those games? Learn anything IGOR?

Geez then you must really love the NY Islanders beating on the ducks and geese in the 81 and 82 playoffs. You mentionned the best Soviet teams were from the late 70s early 80s. Agreed. The Canadiens and Flyers were the best the NHL had to offer from that time. Their record against CSKA was 2-0-1. And that one tie should have been a win.

Furthermore, in the CSKA/Best NHL teams matchups, its clear that the NHL dominated. Ask the Canadiens, Flyers, Sabres and Oilers what Im talking about here. Flyers scared the shit out of CSKA in 76. We both know this. That was one very frightening Flyer team. Even the Canadiens couldnt beat CSKA that year. Sabres beat CSKA 6-1 in 79-80 and Canadiens 4-2 same year. An extremely loaded Oiler team beat them 4-3 in 82-83 (well Soviet National All-Star team).
