@imsocooleo1 she knew all the letters from the beginning after Anne taught her all these different words. It was she finally understood all the signs and letters had meaning
Not bad, but the acting skills are so so, compared to the 1962 version. Go watch the water pump scene from the original movie (you can have it full version on youtube as well, the scene being around 1:40:00) It's breathtaking.
I love that moment when this look of "holy FUCK! THAT'S what this is all about" clarity comes over her face at the pump. We all have had moments like that. I love seeing it in other people. especially when it's something so huge.
@HarajukuEthan _--- this guy needs to be sorry for himself for what he said. He said that Hellen should be killed.
We have a Hellen in our family and saying that was just inconsiderate. But then, Ethan may not have had a disabled person in his family. they are all kids from God and you did not pay God not to have one.
Thank you guys who understand what families with such a kid go through
I just came thru this movie on google by accident. I dedicate it to my Niece sweet Grace. She is Deaf-blind-mute young angel going through this all in Kenya Africa.
you can literally see the light bulb go on for helen in this scene when she finally makes the connection. even down to her shock of dropping the pitcher. its so beautiful
How would Helena know what a "W" sounds like? to say water.. I don't get it.. I mean, yes she can feel the letters, but there's not way she could have said it remotely close..
@causedhope she became blind and mute when she was 19 months old, when she was just beginning to learn words. Water was one of the first words she learned as a toddler. It says so in her autobiography.
I don't know about this movie, but in the play and in the original movie, it mentions the fact that Helen (not Helena by the way) knew to say "wah wah" for water when she was six months old. When she made the connection that what Annie was spelling into her hand was water, she said what she said for water at six months, and that's how Annie knew she'd gotten through to her.
@AirJuvi43 No okay she was blind she had 9 operations on her eyes and know she cans see but she wears the glasses because the lights hurt her eyes because they are very sensitive
Just because she's blind and deaf, doesn't mean she should be given everything she wants. She's a human being. She should be treated like one. I had friends who couldn't walk and when I offered to help, they refused and did everything on their own, just a little differently.
I've just seen this clip, and already I see it is by farrr better than the version where Patty Duke, at last, got her turn to play the part of Annie Sullivan in the story she knew so well, making famous playing the incomprable Helen Keller. Hallie plays the part leaagues better than Melissa Gilbert, whom I expected much more from, given her years of experience as a child actress. FINE job Hallie!
@xxIceWiccanxx ~ Helen was sighted and hearing until she was 19 months old, and already had learnt a number of words, among them was "water". She could say "wah-wah" at 6 months-old, knowing it meant water. At the well, she was at last making the connection, the moving fingers in her hand meant something..and remembering in the deep inner-reaches of her mind what water was, and the sound she made for it..suddenly everything came together.
@Simba92 hello,I believe Helen keller learnt the meaning of word water as a baby and could say "wa wah"and say other words too.But after her illness that deprived her of sight and hearing she forgot all the words she learnt to spell before except the word "water"or wah wah.Strange but real.maybe this word helped her to make the connection between the cold liquid pouring over her hand and its meaning because as she wrote in her biography " it was like a misty consciousness of something forgotten"
The Patty Duke version is a classic and I love that version. What I like more about this version is that during the pump scene, Helen slowly makes the realization between the water and Anne's spelling in her hands whereas I thought in the Patty Duke version, Helen automatically makes the realization when she feels the water which I thought took away the intensity of the moment that she finally understands.
Its so funny how in the movie it seems like the pump and the hunting house is far away from the main house but the pump is only a few feet out of the back door and the hunting house is right next to the main house. I've been to Tuscumbia when I was a teenager after begging my dad to take me. My dad only lives a few hours away from there.

My sister has a two years old daughter called GRACE, She is BlindDeaf and Mute too. I am in Canada but she is in Kenya so i have not seen her.
I dream of a day like this for her. I do not know how to help her but i know that resources are limited for my niece in Africa.
I wish she was from such a family that affords her learning and a private teacher in life
Grace was born 2009 and she was born prematurely 5-6 months in to the pregnancy and all doctors said she wont survive but she did by GOD

Stick with the original starring the incomparable and un-matchable Bancroft and Duke -- this is glossy, Disney crap.
