Growing up, my holiday season wasn't complete without this and A Charlie Brown Christmas. The latter is still very much an annual viewing tradition for me, and the former would be too, if it were still airing.
Before Emmet Otter, this song was a duet with Gonzo Muppet and John Denver. Other than a Muppet I am not sure what Gonzo really was, but I would love to see this special on tv again. More than sad sack Charlie Brown or Claymation Drummer Boy any day.
@mrivney Actually, this song was originally written for Emmet Otter, which first aired on HBO in 1977;although many didn't see it until ABC aired it in 1980. The duet version you're thinking of (and hearing here) was with Robin the frog, not Gonzo, in the A Christmas Together special in 1979, and available on the A Christmas Together album (as long as you don't get the trimmed track list CD released in 2000). Both Robin and Emmet Otter were performed by Jerry Nelson.

Williams played Lord Harmony in Princess Diaries 2, Does voices for a Batman and Superman cartoons and you may remember him as Little Enos from Smokey and the Bandit. Remember the 2 rich "cowboys" in the Cadillac, one was big and fat and the other was a little guy? Paul Williams was the little guy. He did a lot of Music for Henson and was involved in most of Henson's projects.

ugh, i miss those good ol' days!!!! what fascinated me, even to this day, is how real they made those puppets look and the whole scenery as well. especially when the kid mole was rowing the boat. anyway, the song also had meaning. i wish they would bring these old shows from back in the day back on t.v. again. i'm 31 years old, but still a kid at heart. :)

Just like you said, it is tradition in our family and i hope it always is. It always brings back beautiful child hood memories. My wife and I didn't even know we each knew this film until we got married. I am very glad my children get to experience it just as we did.

The sing is from this originally, i think. Ma and Emmet sing it together near the beginning of the movie when they're sledding down a sled that Pa had built before he died (i think that's where it is in the movie). Then John Denver sang it, and it's on the John Denver and the Muppets album.

Jim Henson, never wanted to hide that they we puppets. I've heard that he would even put Kermit on and off in front of the kids he would entertain in person (the kids didn't mind)

He wrote some new songs for the stage version. He is the very epitome of musical genius and values that we so need in this world!!

Thanks for posting this beautiful song and video! I grew up watching Emmett Otter, and this is an all-time favorite. Between Jim Henson, John Denver, and Paul Williams (who wrote this), the "Jug Band Christmas" is a true classic.

I sing this song to my 1 1/2 year old son at bedtime, or when he's really upset. Even though I haven't heard this song in 20+ years, I remembered it...and hearing it here brings it back. I need to go buy this DVD *now.*

This almost brings me to tears- it is that beautiful. It is, to me, the greatest Christmas movie of all time. When I get caught up in the everyday struggles of adulthood, I watch this movie and it brings me back to when life was easy and great.

The sing is from this originally, i think. Ma and Emmet sing it together near the beginning of the movie when they're sledding down a sled that Pa had built before he died (i think that's where it is in the movie). Then John Denver sang it, and it's on the John Denver and the Muppets album.

I was just watching this movie... it is my all time favorite Christmas movie and has been since I was a little kid. I am also a great fan of John Denver and I knew he had recorded this song on A Christmas Together with the Muppets.. What a thrill to find this video clip with John singing.
