Very nice my friend. I'm a student so watching you do this was mesmerizing. I did get nervous when you cut the metal after the stone was set but again I'm a student. Anyhoo, stupid question what do you call that saw that you used at the end on the prongs? =-) Thanx for posting?
I've never even set a single stone..and I couldve done it better!! ... just kidding, I dont know jack about that stuff, just ridiculing your hecklers :)
That was fun to watch :). Although it made me nervous watching you cut and file the prongs after the stone was in...but then again I haven't set a diamond...only softer more scratchable stones.
Just like changing flat tires,so many ways to do it,time and situation...I took G.I.A. Basic & Advance Stonesetting and learned something from this video..Thanks for posting your technique
You could have saved a lot of time by using the small bur only. Also, you seem to have used the wrong size setting for the stone. If you would have used the right size there would have been no need to cut the part of the prongs off. A lot of beginner mistakes in this clip.
Definitely do a series of tutorials if you can. Most of the other videos I have seen on jewelry making don't show the whole technique start to finish, no matter what it is. Great video, thanks for sharing!
Thanks! I searched literally everywhere except youtube for stone setting tutorials. This has been the most helpful one i've found. More explanation on which tools to use and such would be nice though. Im a jeweler just starting out. I need to learn to do this kind of setting. I'll be anxious for more jewelry tutorials on stone setting and whatnot. :) thanks!
Wow! Thanks. This was an off the cuff video to show some friends what I do. I certainly can go into more depth as far as explanations. I never thought of doing a series of tutorials...maybe I should.
It really is the only helpful, free, video i've found. Others are really short "Clip" versions of paid tutorials. I learn by watching though, and with a little more explanation i could probably attempt something like this fairly quickly. I have a couple pieces ready for stones now but waiting to learn to set them. Only a few are prongs though the rest are i believe flush style? not sure what it is exactly called. Im working with silver so it isnt expensive to cast stuff for me.

its a shame the art just doesn't pay well anymore. I'm a third generation jeweler

The key is you have to sell the diamond. The art can pay just fine then. (5th Gen here)

I disagree. I am expanding my business after a year and a half, and going strong.

No, I work out of a building full of cutters, setters, and smiths, downtown..
Man your thumbs and finger tips look really dried-out.

Never realized there was so much competition among jeweler's workmanship.

I didn't have a choice for the head. I am glad your world is perfect.
Mistakes? Because I didn't do things they way you do? Yay, another arrogant jeweler!
BitterJeweler 3 years ago
You did a very good job. I did not mean to sound arrogant, I only thought you could have saved a lot of time with the bur, head size...

Thank you for an amazing video! I'm taking stone setting full time here in Italy at the moment.. You should def. do a tutorial series!

Cool, good to see how your art is done from a consumer angle.
