---the horror show continues---beauty sharpens her blade---the tin horns of pomp and circumstance howl above the grave---more broken than the honored corpse---we poor souls wander home--with a hole in our hearts and a hole in our lives----we will tell ourselves it wasn't a lie----but it was. Like the IED that took him---the Truth esplodes.
Well read; particularly capturing the change from comforting lies to simple reality. Sassoon is very real; not over-done horror but honest reporting. For someone who is so often referred to as an anti-war poet he was honest enough to acknowledge the 'boys own' excitement as well as the horror, simply because that is what he experienced.
I don't think of him as anti-war, just brutally honest, as he is in this poem. Not all that die in war are heroes.

Beautifully read! The metre and rhythm are perfect, the diction impeccable, and the emotional conduits are flawless negotiated!

Are you suggesting the at man who has had enough of the brutality and evils of war and wants to return home is not a hero?
