I bought Davis Gaine's wonderful CD some time ago but was sorely disappointed when no Sweeney Todd songs were on it. It's still beautiful, but I'll have to be content with my concert DVD. Love him.
I'm not much of fan of George Hearn in the tour production (I personally find him to be shouting more than singing) but his siniging in this concert is sublime. Very nuanced and restrained. He's a whole different Sweeney here.
This is perhaps one of my favorite scenes from the show. I love at 6:24 when Sweeney is about to kill the man...until his family comes to watch him get a shave and he's like "Aw come on!"
I love this song! It's such a pretty song. Davis will always be my most favorite Phantom. Just hearing him sing again brings back lots of fun memories for me from Phantom L.A. days.
every since i saw this I too cannot get his performance out of my head. Stunning in delivery and performance. Any time I think I can sing, I watch this and be reminded how far I am behind real talent.
i have geroge's autograph because i did a show with him this spring i must say george hearn is one of the nicest people ever u would not even know he was famous
I don't mean to be off topic because this was amazing, but I have a question is Lisa Vroman a natural blonde or brunette? I'm most used to her as Christine from Phantom (my favorite musical and the one in which she is brunette) but Sweeney Todd is actually close tied for second favorite. So I'm just wondering if anyone knows if she's blonde or not. My guess is she's not but I mean she has to be for this song or "sweetly buried in your yellow hair" would make no sense whatsoever.
that was a bit too much vibrato for my personal taste, but his emotion was incredible. i guess this comment is a bi unfair because I love Bernadette and she puts too much vibrato on everything...
You know--David Gaines really is a great Anthony! I mean, we all are in agreement that George's the perenial Sweeney, but David needs some props--usually the "buried sweetly in your yellow hair" is a rather disturbing line, but he managed to make it sound...nice
you see, underneath the yellow hair, there's a head which is usually thought to think or contain thoughts and logically, in order for Anthony to be in Johanna's head, he has to be in her thoughts
and so he is buried in her head or she is thinking of him
well, if said in the wrong tone, it could sound assuming and a bit self-absorbed (assuming that a girl, after only meeting once, would think of you)
and the lyrics before it can be taken to be a bit creepy ("I'll steal you...I am in the dark beside you...") and so the rest of the lot is assumed to be just as creepy
I have to admit, at first I found it creepy bu, after analyzing it, it's simply a dark way of looking at a love at first sight
I saw this performance at the Lincoln Center a few years ago. This was a tough New York audience. After Gaines sang the longer version of Johanna, the audience stood for 17 minutes of applause. I'm glad someone actually videotaped it...it was an incredible moment. I've seen Sweeney Todd about 20 times -- Gaines was the best...
He's not as high as some people think. He's really more of a high baritone. The true tenors of the show are Toby, Pirelli, and the Beadle. Davis Gaines by my figure is more of a dramatic dark baritone. Which would make him a good Phantom. I think he still captures a good deal of Anthony's innocence though.
He's like, "What?! I have to actually SHAVE this one?"

best Song in the Musical and Movie by far

I've always thought that Anthony should have a light voice... Maybe more like Patrick Wilson (The Fully Monty, Phantom of the Opera, Carousel).

He sings Johanna beautifully! Wow. What a voice! He was the phantom before?? :O

@93142 Not only was Davis Gaines the Phantom, but Timothy Nolen, who plays Judge Turpin, has played the part as well.

I remember getting my throat slashed every night for a few weeks to this song. At one point while dropping down from the chair I twisted my ankle.
George Hearn is lovely, and Davis Gaines is a pretty good, not my all-time favorite though.

I guess the "murder chair ride" isn't as fun as it looks...but dissing Davis is not going to help you make any friends here.
