My old friend, Malcolm Braly, was in San Quentin three times before he was 40. He lived to write about it, and it WAS hell. Johnny told the truth, as he always did, and Malcolm turned me on to Johnny's music. I was a New York City kid, but I was also half a Southerner, too, and that half heard something in him. I don't have the words to say how much I love and respect Johnny's work. He cut across genres: folk, country, rock--he was just Johnny. Johnny and Malcolm are both gone, and I miss them.
