I think the romany influx will undermine the travellers position, which I think has improved considerably in the last 30 years, from my somewhat removed postion.
I always thought most of the travellers were orphans of the famine who banded together and travelled looking for food etc.Some though i believe date back to when Cromwell evicted them
You could move into a caravan and travel from town to town tomorrow. That would make you a traveller not a Gypsy. Lots of Gypsies and Tinkers (Bards) live in houses.
It's an ethnic origin thing, it doesn't make any difference what kind of structure you live in.
When my mother was young travellers used to come to her village every summer and offer services, ie; repairing various household implements, in return for small sums of money or milk. The same village nowadays are scared of travellers due to the way the gov' has forced them into rank halting sites and the benefits system hence the old trades have been lost and many have taken to theft and scamming as a means to an end. Its sad as everyone in life is just trying to make there own way!
Travellers come from when the English came to Ireland they wanted the Irish to pay taxes the travellers are the Irish ppl who wouldnt pay the taxes so they took to the roads instead..

The Irish Travellers are the original pure Irish they are direct decendents of the bronze age Irish tribes, there coulture and language pre-date the settled folks (buffers) very few folks today even know this.

Well travellers are often called gyspsies. Whether its accurate is another matter.
As far as I know, gypsies mainly refer to Roma and not travellers.

Kind of true. The original treavellers are the Irish Bards who are naive to Ireland.
That's why Irish travellers all have a certain appearance. They are a race apart.
