After one of the main characters is held prisoner in a basement for a year by the enemy, she gets out (finally) only to be murdered. Then the other main character commits suicide, because he's just dramatic like that.
Then the book ends. And they end up in the Afterlife. Or something. I'll figure it out eventually.
Two of my characters - I have lots of them - are in fact a little like that. The girl wa born in an insane family. They are just cruel. Her father is the closest to total evil it gets. Her father and brothers abused her since she was six. The youngest of her brothers is more or less normal. He cares for her.
They have an opportunity to escape, but the girl gets killed. The youngest of her 3 brothers tries to get himself killed by his dad
That is a pretty awesome idea. Although i personally (if put in that situation (although that's highly unlikely as i have a relatively sane family - except for me) I personally would kill the dad. Rather than get myself killed by the dad. But that's kind of predictable, and it almost always happens, so your idea is better coz it's original)
@TheOtherEpilogue Smart, I do admit that. But unfortunately the entire family - except the girl, alas - consist of sorcerers, and powerful ones. He woyld have killed his father if he could, but daddy is just too strong (not to mention guarded by his two oldest, loyal sons). Those three can kill him in not even an hour - and he sure is one hell of a warrior. Plus, without his little sis, he hasn't got anything left to live for.
The father can be defeated - he's a great sorcerer, but the good guys are somtimes even more powerful. The Golden Empire - the good one - is ruled by the Lord of Gods, the most powerful sorcerer, except maybe the dad's boss - the White Emperor.
Problem is the father is also a General with a huge army at his command. And he can defeat any of his sons.
@TheOtherEpilogue When did I say the good guys win? Both sides lose a lot of warriors.
Hard to kill off characters? Well, I've quite a lot of characters. Some are way harder than others and I sometimes refuse to let them die. It depends how you look on it. I give my characters a rough time destroying each other. But for me, the author, it isn't that hard. It's just a little drama, and I like that in stories.

@TheOtherEpilogue Well, you'd be more insane - to me - if it was fairly simple to kill people. In a way, I get attached to them as well. That's less with me because I have really a lot of charachters. Just to mention: I have at least a few dozens of major good guys, and only 7 of them die. Less than one out of four.
It happens to more fiction authors, don't worry too much=)!
@JustFlemishMe My story is basically a fantasy story about how there is this whole other world that us innocent humans are completely ignorant of. This world consists of many supernatural creatures. Even ones which i depspise because of overuse (the whole shelf of vampire fiction in bookstores). There are six main characters, and two main main characters, and none of them are human. They're being hunted because they are a serious threat to the dominating speciesof the other world.
I have about a dozen 'heroes', and 3 of them are, as you say, 'main main characters'. The Golden Emperor, being in charge and the strongest; the Duke, his adoptive son, even to his children only known as 'the Duke'; and the youngest of the brothers, the most intresting one. But he ends up betraying his father and Emperor and finding new friends, even getting adopted by the Duke. His little sis is revived. Nice, but they still have to survive a war.
@JustFlemishMe Ah, betrayals. You gotta love em. They just cause so much drama (evil laughter). But I find it irritating when bad characters in books go over to the good side for no apparent reason. It's like, WTF happened? He was so EVIL. And now he's just...good. :)
And wars? Mixing betrayals and wars? I'm sighing at the awesomeness.
Well, there's a good reason for Mirrem (the youngest of those brothers) to come to the good guys. His father abused his little sister, along with his brothers, and forced him to join in. His kind doesn't like being pushed in anything, so he's mad at daddy. His sister comes to be his best friend and then she gets killed. Mirrem blames his father and swears he'll destroy him. The best way to do so is joining forces with the Golden Horde and the Duke.
@JustFlemishMe How'd you think up the name Mirrem? I mostly read through baby names' books. That freaked out my parents for a while, until I assured them it was a story thing, not a baby thing. :)
Well, I just started with the father, Anmer. I wanted somehing like Tolkien's Elvish, but not exactly the same. From jis nam, I derived hid oldest son's: Merrem. And I just added Merrim and Mirrem for names; like Tolkien's work: relatives are named for each other. The link between the brothers Fingolfin and Finarfin is just as obvious.

It's definitely easier to kill characters, because you know if it'll change the outcome you want.
I think the mean of the song is; people who are very desperate for love, and they do anything for someone to love them or pretend at least. This is what I think the meaning of the song is. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Reminds me of a character in a story of mine. His family always hated him - except his little sister, but she was killed. In the end he conspires with the enemies of his father and he's even happy if they just bother to pretend they like him. In return he fights off his own father and brothers, and their huge army, with only a few allies. Well, that's desperate.
Simalr to a character of mine. Her parents thought she was a bad omen from the day she was born and disowned her, kids stayed away from her due to the fact she jsut SEEMED different. On the day she was about to commit suicide a demon came and all it wanted was for her to beg for her life. She didn't. She simply wanted a being to accompany her, someone to at least like her. So it posessed her, leaving her some control of herself, but every few months it needs a human sacrifice.

My character in fact desires to become an outcast - anything so he wouldn't have to face his father again. His ultimate goal is: dying in the war against his father, in the sure and certain knowledge his father won't make it either.
But in the end, he finds a new family. A family that loves him. I like sad stories with a happy end.

I have some of my characters making plans to kill each other out of love, 'cause allowing their enemies to have them captured is much worse.
But I make it end happily =)
And it's not like I compete giving my characters the worst time possible.

After one of the main characters is held prisoner in a basement for a year by the enemy, she gets out (finally) only to be murdered. Then the other main character commits suicide, because he's just dramatic like that.
Then the book ends. And they end up in the Afterlife. Or something. I'll figure it out eventually.

Two of my characters - I have lots of them - are in fact a little like that. The girl wa born in an insane family. They are just cruel. Her father is the closest to total evil it gets. Her father and brothers abused her since she was six. The youngest of her brothers is more or less normal. He cares for her.
They have an opportunity to escape, but the girl gets killed. The youngest of her 3 brothers tries to get himself killed by his dad

That is a pretty awesome idea. Although i personally (if put in that situation (although that's highly unlikely as i have a relatively sane family - except for me) I personally would kill the dad. Rather than get myself killed by the dad. But that's kind of predictable, and it almost always happens, so your idea is better coz it's original)
Or maybe because i love tragedy. Whatever. :)

@TheOtherEpilogue Smart, I do admit that. But unfortunately the entire family - except the girl, alas - consist of sorcerers, and powerful ones. He woyld have killed his father if he could, but daddy is just too strong (not to mention guarded by his two oldest, loyal sons). Those three can kill him in not even an hour - and he sure is one hell of a warrior. Plus, without his little sis, he hasn't got anything left to live for.

The father can be defeated - he's a great sorcerer, but the good guys are somtimes even more powerful. The Golden Empire - the good one - is ruled by the Lord of Gods, the most powerful sorcerer, except maybe the dad's boss - the White Emperor.
Problem is the father is also a General with a huge army at his command. And he can defeat any of his sons.

Just out of professional curiosity, do you find it hard to kill your characters off? I took about a month deciding whether i should kill mine or not.

Hard to kill off characters? Well, I've quite a lot of characters. Some are way harder than others and I sometimes refuse to let them die. It depends how you look on it. I give my characters a rough time destroying each other. But for me, the author, it isn't that hard. It's just a little drama, and I like that in stories.

@TheOtherEpilogue Well, you'd be more insane - to me - if it was fairly simple to kill people. In a way, I get attached to them as well. That's less with me because I have really a lot of charachters. Just to mention: I have at least a few dozens of major good guys, and only 7 of them die. Less than one out of four.
It happens to more fiction authors, don't worry too much=)!

@JustFlemishMe My story is basically a fantasy story about how there is this whole other world that us innocent humans are completely ignorant of. This world consists of many supernatural creatures. Even ones which i depspise because of overuse (the whole shelf of vampire fiction in bookstores). There are six main characters, and two main main characters, and none of them are human. They're being hunted because they are a serious threat to the dominating speciesof the other world.

I have about a dozen 'heroes', and 3 of them are, as you say, 'main main characters'. The Golden Emperor, being in charge and the strongest; the Duke, his adoptive son, even to his children only known as 'the Duke'; and the youngest of the brothers, the most intresting one. But he ends up betraying his father and Emperor and finding new friends, even getting adopted by the Duke. His little sis is revived. Nice, but they still have to survive a war.

Well, there's a good reason for Mirrem (the youngest of those brothers) to come to the good guys. His father abused his little sister, along with his brothers, and forced him to join in. His kind doesn't like being pushed in anything, so he's mad at daddy. His sister comes to be his best friend and then she gets killed. Mirrem blames his father and swears he'll destroy him. The best way to do so is joining forces with the Golden Horde and the Duke.

Well, I just started with the father, Anmer. I wanted somehing like Tolkien's Elvish, but not exactly the same. From jis nam, I derived hid oldest son's: Merrem. And I just added Merrim and Mirrem for names; like Tolkien's work: relatives are named for each other. The link between the brothers Fingolfin and Finarfin is just as obvious.

Reminds me of a character in a story of mine. His family always hated him - except his little sister, but she was killed. In the end he conspires with the enemies of his father and he's even happy if they just bother to pretend they like him. In return he fights off his own father and brothers, and their huge army, with only a few allies. Well, that's desperate.

Simalr to a character of mine. Her parents thought she was a bad omen from the day she was born and disowned her, kids stayed away from her due to the fact she jsut SEEMED different. On the day she was about to commit suicide a demon came and all it wanted was for her to beg for her life. She didn't. She simply wanted a being to accompany her, someone to at least like her. So it posessed her, leaving her some control of herself, but every few months it needs a human sacrifice.

My character in fact desires to become an outcast - anything so he wouldn't have to face his father again. His ultimate goal is: dying in the war against his father, in the sure and certain knowledge his father won't make it either.
But in the end, he finds a new family. A family that loves him. I like sad stories with a happy end.
