@JimPrower It's called a return flue boiler, once common on other brands of traction engines besides Huber. Very common for factory + older marine boilers like Titanic. Fire burns in a large round flue near the bottom of the boiler, travels to the front end, up thru a smokebox at the front, and back thru smaller tubes in the upper part of the boiler, then out the stack right above the firedoor.
@JimPrower Makes a very compact, rigid boiler compared to a one-pass locomotive type boiler, with relatively less outside surface vs volume. Tends to be good thermal efficiency, and the rigidity reduces leak formation.
There are many similar boilers resting at the bottom of the world's oceans and the Great Lakes.
There's a couple good examples of return flue factory boilers working at the Portersville show.
Interesting boiler setup...how's it work? Looks like it's back-to-front...but that cant' be the whole story, as the firedoor's on the near side.
