  • Great we need more of this machines, in all the shoppings, all the countries and in all over the world, and this bitcoin mobile wallets too!

  • Awesome bitcoinsusd

  • I would just steal that digital display, smash in the glass and take whatever the fuck I want.

  • @savemyplaylist Watch out, we got a badass over here

  • @ImMr1337 stop diddling little children

  • Yeah but there's no point is there?? Not that I can see, Dont know too much about BC but isnt it meant for purchases were you require a certain degree of anonymity. And besides its not particularly easy to use through a vending machine.

  • I hope you're not too hungry.... This process is way too slow and takes too many steps. Buying with cash or card is still infinitely faster. Don't expect to see this in your local cafeteria.

  • would be great if it sold bitcoin! :)

  • great job, Dr. Card. Wish you much success!

  • jesus christ, just bring money with you

  • Found the article, but YouTube won't allow me to post a link apparently. Just Google "Coke To Test Google Wallet In Vending Machines". The article I saw was in Vending Times Jun 17, 2011.

The article says that Coke was rolling out 200 machines like this, this past Sept (2011).

  • Second, from the looks of things you could starve to death trying to get a snack out of a machine. It looks like you have to tinker with a screen, then tinker with it some more, then pull out your phone and literally take a picture of a QR code. Wouldn't it be a lot easier to just pull out a dollar, or swipe a credit card to do this in like 1/3 the time? If I owned the machine I'd be sweating the incredibly long transaction time. People waiting would walk away.

    Just my opinion.

  • A couple observations. First, I'm not sure that this was the worlds first Bitcoin transaction. I am pretty sure I read in Vending Times last summer that Coke was in testing on a similar system. I'll try and find the link and post it.

  • @hificat101 that system doesn't use bitcoins. so this is indeed "the first ever purchase (a bag of popcorn) from a vending machine using a QRcode and a smartphone Bitcoin wallet"

  • Thats amazing. You almost put me to sleep. But yes amazing

  • Great work Utica NY.

  • This is a good step.

  • I want one!

  • A small drop for the popcorn, a giant leap for bitcoin

  • Very impressive, but still somewhat complicated. Maybe the confirmation step can be thrown out?

  • @Rassah5 then you dont get how bitcoins work

  • @sayrith I wasn't talking about Bitcoin block chain confirmation, I was taking about confirming your purchase by typing in the 10 into the machine the second time after your payment was received. I don't see why you would enter the selection for the popcorn twice, other than there being some software limitation in the machine. I understand how bitcoins work VERY well, thankyouverymuch.

  • @Rassah5 oh like that. if i were using it, i would like to have some confirmation so the machine knows to look for my deposit.

  • @Rassah5 The first selection on the touchscreen is to get the price that needs to be paid.

The second selection is to actually get the product, I guess they hacked into the coincounter system, so while they can add coins to the machine, without actually adding a coin, it does not fake the key presses to select the product.

Another way could be a static QR code, they user sends some funds to it and selects a product, the price is displayed on the machine.

  • I wanna see a vending machine that sells bitcoin for cash!

  • @onelineproof check out 'bitcoin ATM'

  • You forgot the part where you need 3 days to transfer funds to mtgox and retrieve them to a bitcoin wallet.

  • @ahtremblay or you just mine your own...

  • Totally awesome! The video may make it seem to be complicated but in fact adding this functionality requires just 1 extra button press (method of payment selection). The UI of the machine would obviously be more streamlined before public use starts.

  • Bit complicated - too much buttons to press. Old fashioned coins are much easier to use. But still impressive!

  • @kulnokas I have to agree. A question i have is how about confirmations ? How is it programmed to not require 1 or more confirmations ?

  • @Mysticsam86 because confirmations are not relevant when selling popcorn. accepting bitcoin transactions without confirmations (after having waited ~10 seconds) is pretty safe. it would take an attacker too much effort to pull it off compared to what he gets out of it (free popcorn).

  • @malkdk okej so confirmation is not relevant but how is it configured to not request confirmations? that my question.

  • @Mysticsam86 everyone can accept 0-confirmation transactions. no one is forcing you to wait on confirmations. they don't spend the bitcoins they receive from the customer immediately, they have to wait about an hour for this because other people want 6 confirmations, but they don't have to wait for confirmations before giving the customer his product if they don't want to.
