I really like Roy Dean belt exam video, but i really dont understand why he ask for leg locks? Becouse this kind of movement just allowed on purple or bronw/black belt in BJJ
nelson, its not about how long you train, but how much knowledge you are able to retain and keep with you so you have the ability to use it under pressure. Styles like karate or taekwondo will tell you how long you need to be there to get a black belt, but bjj in my opinion is more realistic about their belt system
So true. Plus, bjj is a sport that doesn't play the belt game like most martial arts. You have great blue belts and terrible brown belts. It all comes down to training. Even if you have a brown or black belt, you still have the same skills as if you were wearing a white one.
Simply: getting the belt isn't the goal, getting the system is.
Anyone who trains at this school should be proud to practice there. Clearly they do alot more drilling then at my school. Somehow we seem to win all of the competitions but there are very few of us who can move like water.
to the guy who wanted to know what was at .28 seconds.... That looks like he escaped the mount and pulled guard lol. If you never seen that before u might have some problems.
All I've gotta say is I've been doing no-gi for over 5 years now and hold British and European titles in pro Mma but for some reason this vid made me wanna buy a gi! Got one now and I train in it at least twice a week.. Really brought my ground game on.
The technique looked far beyond blue belt level. It wasn't until the rolling that the guy looked like a four stripe white belt. A little forced and awkward is all.
Well i agree to have a good roll with your student, but to let ur student make you tap, even if he just LET HIM TAP HIM , i dont AGREE with that, but good video and good vibration.
Looks very sharp for a blue belt! I'm more impressed with the instructor's humility, there are very few instructors in BJJ that will let thier ego go like that so that you can get the best training. You're lucky to be training with such a humble instructor!
@mmahoss Roy Dean is known for tapping to his students to help their confidence and help to make them as best as they can be. He would never lose to any of his students in a real match.
I can see why you might question the style. I looks like they practice out of an Aikido dojo. You can see a picture of Morihei Ueshiba, Aikido's founder, in the middle of the altar surrounded by the Japanese gate. There are also Aikido logos on the wall in frames. It's definitely BJJ though. Judo and Ju jitsu students dont learn those techniques till much later in the cirriculum.
Congratulations Rick ! I´m from Brazil and practice Ju - Jutsu. I sure we don´t have blue belts like you here. I´m a blue belt also and one day i wish the privilege to training with you !
I don't attend a graded school (I attend a no-gi mma school) but the fact that I could do any and all of these with speed and accuracy make me smile. Thanks for the demo.
These vids of gradings make a great demo! I've been thinking about starting for a while and this has given me good insight....think i might get down the dojo next week! good job!
How long does it take (on average) to get your blue belt? I know this varies from one student to the next, but I'm looking for a rough/average estimate... respect to Dean!
That was beautiful... I almost cried... I can't wait for my test...seems like such an awesome experience to roll with your master and feel like you can hang, even though he probably lets you win after some time... lol
i was thinking the same thing. As much as i'd like to be able to say "i'm a black belt in bjj", i'm glad that the belts are a good indication of your level of ability. Its gotta be painful for all these mcdojo students to get schooled by people several belts below them
could we get a list of those techniques please? im one month into my training and a feel a bit clueless in sparring. id love to have a list like that to try and practice.
I'M A JKDC STYLIST under Paul Vunak & Dan Inosanto, but this vid has given me the respect I've been looking for the in the 'seriously technical' ground game of BJJ!! Enjoy & come get some my friends!!!
I applaud you sir! congratulations! I am just a 2nd degree white belt as of now. there's a vid of me when i first started like a year and a half ago on my page. I'm starving for my blue belt but i still have a lot of work ahead of me.
The most fluid BJJ I've seen. All of his students have a superior root knowledge of their techniques. You should notice there was emphasis on POSITIONAL DOMINANCE for this level and not tap, tap, tap. Great Judo infusion. Exeptional work!
I thought the same thing! Glad Im not the only one. I mean you work offense during the handshake you might as well be able to head butt your opponent to the nose the moment you are in full guard as well. But outstanding video and congratulations to all involved!
The thing that strike me as most unusual is the bowing... I don't remember a single BJJ academy that we use to bow to each other...
The throws were done with a higher degree of skill than even a judo white or blue-belt... although with many mistakes as it is expected from any white/blue belt (should try go lower, should not lift the elbow like that, and other minor errors)...
Roy Dean has to have some of the smoothest BJJ I've seen and his students are a reflextion of that. This demo/test is just beautiful to watch. Well done. We also like that he teaches both JJJ and BJJ..a very good combo.
I really like Japanese Jujutsu and I doubt that will ever chance, but after viewing Rick's demo, I have to say, that you do a VERY nice job in your techs. I like that you're aware, and use what seems natural to your opponent as a defence as an exploit that allows you to lock him into submission. VERY WELL DONE!
I'm black belt in Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I own a big Martial Arts school (12 years) here in California. One of the Machado Brothers are my partner. Back in Brazil I also did Shotokan-Karate up to black belt but stop.
Very nice. I especially like how the instructor allowed himself to be tapped at the end. It really takes the ego out of the equation and puts the focus on learning - well done.
His tank was running on E.
