Science isn't about the answers. Rather, it's about the journey, and so far that journey has produced more human achievements in technology and creativity than any other medium in human history.
If we had never asked the questions, which we continue to try to answer to this day, we would not have had steam engines, electric motors, electronics, medicine, photonics, chemistry, social sciences, and the list goes on and on. We would still be stuck in a feudal era where life expectancy is 40 years.
That is great. But magnetism is still a miracle of existence. Whoop Whoop! I guess I still don't understand why people spend so much time hating on music and people they profess to not like and can not stand.
It saddens me most of you have no inkling of what the man Richard Feynman is trying to say here. Although I do not agree with evolnemesis, I do agree that it is not fully understood -- by anyone -- and that there's still a lot more to try and understand about nature.

We have very little concept of how gravity or electromagnetism really works... yet scientists will sit there all day and pretend to explain it. All anyone really can do is throw mathematical equations at results gained through observation of the forces, but they have yet to explain why they exist or through what means they really operate.
Great post an' I'm really happy for y'all, and imma let you finish BUT:
We understand the method by which electromagnetism works. We wouldn't necessarily be able to explain it in lay terms to a juggalo, but they are well understood. The test of a theory based on observations is it's ability to predict future observations, and we have this in spades with electromagnetism. EM is the golden child of the four fundamental forces, in terms of our understanding of it.
@revilo314 Granted we have methodology and mathematics to help us. However, you cannot suggest that we fully grasp and understand comprehensively. Quantum Electrodynamics, which is right on subject with electromagnetism, is not fully understood. Feynman himself said if you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don't understand quantum mechanics.
@evolnemesis i'd disagree with you there. physicists have uncovered a staggering amount about both of those forces. no one in physics "pretends" to explain anything. Either they understand what they are saying because the theory has a sound rational basis and backed up by observation and mathematics, or they admit that it's not understood. what explanations you might have heard or heard might not have made sense to you, but you can rest assured people are not just pulling them out of thin air.
@evolnemesis for a refutation of your argument, please read your post. it's presence here certifies the flawless operation of countless telecommunication, data storage and data processing equipment, the vast majority of which operates on electrical and magnetic hardware.
Eh, It seems to me this guy is saying what Shaggy said in different words... he doesn't claim to fully understand or be able to explain magnetic force other than to say it just IS THERE ( 'it's just there in the air') and there in the chair too. The songs really about how amazing stuff is that we normally take for granted, and Feynmann is saying how we take for granted that we can't move through solid objects, but even that is related to forces we take for granted and don't fully understand.
@evolnemesis He can't explain it in simple "every day" terms because you would need a basic education in science to talk about it (electrons, atoms etc).
@evolnemesis he doesn't say he can't explain it, he sais he can't explain it without going into scientific detail, which would be incomprehensible to people who didn't study physics.
And most people never studied physics so explaining it in scientific terms would be quite pointless
@Jawooswoissnaiich He does go on to say he cannot explain it. He could explain it by using rubber bands as an example, but he would be fooling you in the process. Yes, even in physics terms and comprehensiveness, it is not fully understood.
@Jawooswoissnaiich He cannot explain it fully. It's just a fact of nature. Read up a bit on this stuff, you'll see what I mean. It's presumptuous to think we fully understand nature, QED, electromagnetism, etc.
@Jawooswoissnaiich No. Science is not fully understood, and it's really presumptuous to think so. Read up a bit more before bashing people on something you're unfamiliar with.
Shut yo' bitch-ass up, y'all dorky mothafuckin' scientists. I don' wanna hear dat shit. Y'all can't fuckin' esplain magnets, don' even try. Magic all up in dis bitch.
I think Shaggy 2 Dope penned the line, "I don't wanna talk to no scientist - y'all mothafuckas lyin' an' gettin' me pissed" after watching this video. Surely, Mr. Feynman you must be joking that you can't explain how fuckin' magnets work to a fuckin' rapping clown...! Oh...huh. You really can't. OK. Well, then. Chalk that up as a loss for Science. Hopefully Carl Sagan, Richard Dawkins, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Bill Nye the Science Guy will make another music video to make up for it...
@apvansel I didnt say that, i saying what i said as if i were talking directly to the Feynmann, not the uploader. I do understand how you thought otherwise, so i will notify UPS to NOT deliver the horse head.

@teh8man he says "I can't explain it in terms that you are more familiar with" which does not mean he can't explain it at all.
which is exactly what I wrote in my last post ...

@teh8man well, of course he can not explain it better than the current understanding of the matter goes.
But that is true for everything.
I guess as long as there isn't anything that we _fully_ understand, we don't need to be that picky though.
