I remember Kmart as having an extremely negative connotation. If your parents shopped at Kmart, you were considered poor. Adolescents can often be very harsh.
Who's around to remember what K-Mart was like back during this time period.
As a child, I remember they had a small cafeteria style grill section toward the back (not to be confused with K-Cafe at the Super K's nowadays). I remember I always had chicken, mashed potatoes, and corn.
Did all K-Marts have that grill section back then?
That is the happiest 1 minute of my life right now. I'm barely old enough to recall the big days of Kmart in the 70's, but it must have been a big deal for them to put this ad together.
@Kalkas53 So let me get this straight your related to the guy who founded K-Mart? @Neville6000 I miss Kmart. Many of the stores (but not all of them) in Canada have been replaced by Zellers, which itself is unfortunately expected to be replaced by Target in 2013 (not that I don't like Target; I like it better than Walmart anyway). Apparently not the same since Zellers was sold to a man from South Carolina.
Danny Wells as the store manager? Wasn't he also the voice of Luigi in "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show"? He did sound exactly like George Carlin.
K Mart is awful. I have worked there almost a year. They treat everyone like crap, we all get minimum wage and excesive amounts of work because they are underemployed. Others might enjoy shopping there, but they should see the other side of the story. I am happy to have a job, but I do get tired of pushing buggies in the hot sun and working on outragous heavy amounts of merchandise. Thats alright though, regardless of what situation, there is always a positive side.
Kmart is one of the few retail stores I will go to. It needs to make a comeback and put some fear into Wally World. You could always buy quality at Kmart, still can, instead of crap like at Wal-Mart.
In the movie "The Last American Hero," (1973) you can see Jeff Bridges inside a K-Mart store when he's recording (on a real vinyl record!) a message to the girl. You have to watch the widescreen version to see the K-mart store signs.
Why am I watching commercials? Commercials!!! I think You Tube is proof that the entire planet is completely bored. But I think I might go to K-Mart tomorrow. I haven't been there in a while and I'm sick of Wal-Mart.
@rissicris Have you been to Kmart yet? Please try it. You won't be disappointed. I've been to Kmart and it's much better than Walmart and I like the inventory at Kmart better. Walmart is too big and too boring I just ended up walking in Walmart wandering around and then walk out the door. At Kmart, it's more convenience and I can go in and find what I like.
Kmart got very complacent, they were the only game in town, where I lived in the early 90"s, long lines, not having advertised merchandises, and sloppy stores were there hallmark. Wal mart opene in 94, by 2002 kmart was gone.

I worked at one that used to be a Robert Hall Village and it was such a po dunk store, too. It is now a home improvement center. It is strange seeing K Marts nowadays with so many of them gone. Not much of a loss in my opinion.
I miss the Kmart blue light specials. They would roll a blue flashing light around to different departments and then announce there was a blue light special wherever the light was. Our Kmart didn't sell refrigerators that I can remember but it was where I did most of my shopping and then Walmart came around. I don't shop at Walmart anymore and still prefer Kmart. The people shopping there don't look as strange as some of the Walmart shoppers either.
Danny Wells (from "Mario Bros" w/Captain Lou Albano), and at 0:30 that's Johnny Haymer (from "Madame's Place" and "M*A*S*H*") looking through the tire. I remember this ad from the '70s. And yes, I'm old enough to remember Kresge's (the company's original name). I was born in Brockton MA, and they had a Kresge's store downtown until it closed in '72 or '73. It was a great place to get Matchbox, Hot Wheels and Johnny Lightning cars.
k-mart went to hell when they started to sell that celebrity garbage, rosie o'cow penny 'pincher' marshall , the whole cast of charlie's angels , and that convict's over priced junk !
@FredinOH I didn't know that either. I always thought they didn't start selling them until they merged with Sears. Not that it mattered since K-mart pulled out of Houston in 2003.
@FredinOH Yes, and they still do. Ever since the Kmart-Sears merger, they sell a bunch of different brands, including Kenmore, which until the merger was only available at Sears.
I can remember the good old days when K-Mart had a complete sit down cafe and a fairly competent auto service department. And each department actually had someone assigned and working in them so you didn't have to walk clean across the store to get assistance. I miss those days....as recent as the 1980s....but now we have that famous monster called Walmart and little else.
this is a great commercial i used to shop at the K mart alot the k stands for kregskeys. along time a god kregskeys opened up a 5 @ 10 cent store im not to sure but i think K mart is going to close soon because walmart and other stores are takeing away coustemers because of the lower prices

There used to be a very kick-ass K-Mart nearby me, on 76th and Good Hope in Milwaukee, WI.....I mean, it was really kick ass. You could shop all you wanted, get a slice of pizza from their Little Caesar's on the left hand side from the front entrance, all that good stuff. Sadly this K-Mart closed around 2001; it's since been a Home Depot and a Pick 'n' Save :(
The Kmart in Greensburg,Pa. was awesome! I got all my school clothes there. It had a nice cafeteria also. My parents went there often to get Kodak "slides" made!
K is for KRESGE. As a kid, we always shopped at SS Kresge's and their subsidiary Jupiter Discount Stores. We didn't get a K Mart until much later. All the USA Kresge and Jupiters are now closed. I'm glad the Kresge legacy lives on through the regular K, Big K and massive Super K Mart / Sears outlets.
Okay, so if this was the spot they'd run for the grand openings of K-Mart's, should they be running it backwards to announce the clearance sales for the CLOSINGS of all of these K-Marts?
Actually, Kmart owns Sears, not the other way around. When the purchase was finalized, Kmart Corporation took the name Sears Holdings. Most Kmarts now sell items Sears carries such as Kenmore appliances and Craftsman tools.
I assume you were replying to me. Ok, I got it backwards, my bad. I think that most of my mistake was due to the fact that Kmart seems to be having problems right now and not in a position to buy Sears. Sears, as a side note, is where we have bought all of our appliances. But why not just directly reply to me instead of posting a new comment so I would know someone had something to say? Like I said before, we don't have any Big K's, but we have 3 Super Walmarts and one 1 regular Target.
There was talk of building another Super Walmart 2 minutes away from my house. This was denied. And, there is an old one 2 minutes from my house, but in a different location. The thing is, to me it seems as though Walmarts and Targets just grow but Kmart cannot. There has never been any talk of a Big K here. My bf and I are surprised that there isn't a Super Target here, or whatever they are called. But our Target did add freezers and alcohol. And my regular Walmart here did the same.
To SpongeStorm4000: Have you ever worked at Roses? I did for 4 years. They treat people like slaves, don't listen to you, and the managers think its all about them. This is why I left retail for good. Watch how the major retailers treat their employees, and you'll see what they're REALLY all about.
We have 3 here. Neither are Big K's, though. I just asked my bf if all of them sell appliances, according to him(and he is often wrong), only 1 of ours does. But still, some K-marts still sell appliances. But it may or may not be on it's way out, since they are now owned by Sears.
Walmart is NOT the only store. There's also Target, ShopKo, Pamida, Meijer, Roses, Duckwall-ALCO, Biggs, Skagway, and Fred Meyer.
Considering the fact that I live in Wisconsin, ShopKo is basically the only true competition to Target and Walmart. Kmart is having a hard time competing in Green Bay.
Oooh! I'm a Milwaukee native. ShopKo and all those other stores you mentioned aren't even here. It's mainly Wal*Mart and Target.....the first ShopKo I ever saw was in Racine or Kenosha, I think.
ShopKo is found in most mid-sized communities like Green Bay, Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin, Marquette, Michigan, and Omaha, Nebraska, and in suburbs of larger cities like Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Kenosha), and Seattle, Washington (Lacey). ShopKo has one location in California, in the city of Redding.
It might be about 30 miles from Milwaukee, but could be considered part of the Milwaukee market. Racine & Grafton, and now, Sussex are the closest cities to Milwaukee that have a Shopko. I've been hearing rumors that Shopko is looking to open a store in Milwaukee County. I don't know how true it is, but I like Shopko. I wish they were in Indiana. Not sure if they could compete with Meijer in my area. Walmart, Kmart, & Target are in my area too.
@davenwin1973-I guess so. It just drives me nuts that people consider Waukesha, Thiensville, whatever, as part of Milwaukee county when they're obviously MILES apart and have different area codes and crap :P
I remember in the late 70's / early 80's my Dad got pissed when my Mom went to K-Mart and refused to go in with her. Said it felt like welfare and didn't want to be caught there. Luckily there was an arcade next door so we spent time doing the Galaga thing. I loved K-Mart!!
It was 1969.

@Navdan87 I miss the Kmart in Greensburg, PA too. My brother and I used to buy G.I.Joe and Transformers there. It's a Gabriel Brothers now.

I miss the old red and blue logo. I like the 80's the best with the bolder "mart".

The 80s kmart was the best ever. Not even Walmart can beat kmart. I wished Kmart looks the same like in that video :-(

We still get a shit load of Kmart commercials here in Arizona even thought there is like only one left open in the entire state
michael85225 2 years ago
Yeah it was right next to my house when I lived in Tucson Arizona. The scary, 24-hour Super K on Broadway and Wilmot.

Okay, so if this was the spot they'd run for the grand openings of K-Mart's, should they be running it backwards to announce the clearance sales for the CLOSINGS of all of these K-Marts?

Comeee to Kmart and push your cart toward lower prices! Kmart! Where quality is the norm and you can feel at homeeee.
kenfuscious 2 years ago 2
Actually, Kmart owns Sears, not the other way around. When the purchase was finalized, Kmart Corporation took the name Sears Holdings. Most Kmarts now sell items Sears carries such as Kenmore appliances and Craftsman tools.
jbeen75 2 years ago
I assume you were replying to me. Ok, I got it backwards, my bad. I think that most of my mistake was due to the fact that Kmart seems to be having problems right now and not in a position to buy Sears. Sears, as a side note, is where we have bought all of our appliances. But why not just directly reply to me instead of posting a new comment so I would know someone had something to say? Like I said before, we don't have any Big K's, but we have 3 Super Walmarts and one 1 regular Target.
fionafan22 2 years ago
There was talk of building another Super Walmart 2 minutes away from my house. This was denied. And, there is an old one 2 minutes from my house, but in a different location. The thing is, to me it seems as though Walmarts and Targets just grow but Kmart cannot. There has never been any talk of a Big K here. My bf and I are surprised that there isn't a Super Target here, or whatever they are called. But our Target did add freezers and alcohol. And my regular Walmart here did the same.

K-Mart.. where all your dreams come true..
Did he really say that?..

To SpongeStorm4000: Have you ever worked at Roses? I did for 4 years. They treat people like slaves, don't listen to you, and the managers think its all about them. This is why I left retail for good. Watch how the major retailers treat their employees, and you'll see what they're REALLY all about.

F%$k Walmart, I never shop there!

Kmart back then like in the film was the greatest store ever. Now, sadly, they are facing backlash from Walmart. I hope we will save Kmart.
dmana3172 2 years ago 2
Kmart blows, they're going out of business everywhere, even though Sears owns them now.

Kmart wins. Shopping at walmart is something like a war involving screaming kids that aren't yours.

I had forgotten that KMart once sold major appliances like refrigerators, stoves, ect.
Brianeddie666 2 years ago
Once? The K-marts in my city still sell appliances.
fionafan22 2 years ago
All of our KMarts closed up long ago.
Brianeddie666 2 years ago
We have 3 here. Neither are Big K's, though. I just asked my bf if all of them sell appliances, according to him(and he is often wrong), only 1 of ours does. But still, some K-marts still sell appliances. But it may or may not be on it's way out, since they are now owned by Sears.

I used to like Kmart,as well as Hills, and CG MurphysMart. Now it seems Walmart is the only store.
Cinemax1980 2 years ago
Walmart is NOT the only store. There's also Target, ShopKo, Pamida, Meijer, Roses, Duckwall-ALCO, Biggs, Skagway, and Fred Meyer.
Considering the fact that I live in Wisconsin, ShopKo is basically the only true competition to Target and Walmart. Kmart is having a hard time competing in Green Bay.
SpongeStorm4000 2 years ago 2
Oooh! I'm a Milwaukee native. ShopKo and all those other stores you mentioned aren't even here. It's mainly Wal*Mart and Target.....the first ShopKo I ever saw was in Racine or Kenosha, I think.
MiltownPunkette21 2 years ago
ShopKo is found in most mid-sized communities like Green Bay, Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin, Marquette, Michigan, and Omaha, Nebraska, and in suburbs of larger cities like Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Kenosha), and Seattle, Washington (Lacey). ShopKo has one location in California, in the city of Redding.
SpongeStorm4000 2 years ago
Kenosha's not a suburb of Milwaukee. It's its own separate city, county, all that.
MiltownPunkette21 2 years ago
It might be about 30 miles from Milwaukee, but could be considered part of the Milwaukee market. Racine & Grafton, and now, Sussex are the closest cities to Milwaukee that have a Shopko. I've been hearing rumors that Shopko is looking to open a store in Milwaukee County. I don't know how true it is, but I like Shopko. I wish they were in Indiana. Not sure if they could compete with Meijer in my area. Walmart, Kmart, & Target are in my area too.
davenwin1973 2 years ago
@davenwin1973-I guess so. It just drives me nuts that people consider Waukesha, Thiensville, whatever, as part of Milwaukee county when they're obviously MILES apart and have different area codes and crap :P

I remember in the late 70's / early 80's my Dad got pissed when my Mom went to K-Mart and refused to go in with her. Said it felt like welfare and didn't want to be caught there. Luckily there was an arcade next door so we spent time doing the Galaga thing. I loved K-Mart!!
