im a big benn fan, but i felt when he accidently fell forward in ninth round and headbutted mcclellan that did some damage, mcclellan seemed to start blinking a lot after it and maybe that head clash did a lot of damage, benns punching also did but that headbutt seemed to do somethink to gerald.

Gerald McClellan hadn't prepared properly. He had fallen out with Manny Steward, and wound up with a corner that included a guy he had met just three weeks earlier and who had never been a second before. I can't help thinking someone like Steward would have realised long before the fight was over that something was wrong because television replays show McClellan blinking in his corner from midway through the fight

McLelland was a guy with a slender frame and suspect stamina. He had previously taken head punches from all the biggest bangers around at middleweight. He then steps in with one of the biggest hitters in the Super Middleweights. Just count how many clean head punches he takes from Benn in this fight. This was a tragedy just waiting to happen.
Watt made an ass of himself. He not only got it wrong by calling mcclellan a coward but his call that it was probably dehydration and not punches suggests he must not have seen the fight.

I think the ref was way too over protective of Benn in the fist round, he stopped McLennan jumping on him after the knockdown if you watch it back again. Nigel Benn kept hitting behind McClelland's head all night, cheap shot. its the only way that Benn can hang with G-man is fighting in England. if it was in the United States where we have the real refereeing the fight it would have been over in the first round, and G-man could have been one of the best fighter of all time.
I'm not sure that I'll ever see two fighters with as much heart if I live for another 50 years. Benn knew the pain he would face by getting back into the ring and McClellan knew at the end of round 2 that this was going to be a war. Most fighters would have quit before this one got started.

Yes I watched the fight live and remember McClellan hanging his mouth piece out of his mouth and blinking uncontrollably during the final rounds. I also remember Ferdie Pacheco questioning McClellan's heart as well, so it wasn't just the English announcers. I told my girlfriend at the time, something is wrong with him. So not everyone thought he had "given up."

I recall watching the fight which was one of the best fights I have ever watched. It is easy with hindsight to mke comment. Along with the Watson Eubank it ranks amongst he classics. To sauggest that you can have boxing without suffering you are lost. It isa brutal sport. It is why I stopped

McLelland was a guy with a slender frame and suspect stamina. He had previously taken head punches from all the biggest bangers around at middleweight. He then steps in with one of the biggest hitters in the Super Middleweights. Just count how many clean head punches he takes from Benn in this fight. This was a tragedy just waiting to happen.

Watt made an ass of himself. He not only got it wrong by calling mcclellan a coward but his call that it was probably dehydration and not punches suggests he must not have seen the fight.
It was the type of fight that you almost expect somebody to be hurt. Both fighters took incredible punishment.

Bit harsh to say Jim Watt got it wrong, he was talking like a fighter. Reg Gutteridge noticed McClellan was blinking a couple of rounds previous so he cornermen should've too. If you watch a Youtube clip with Steve Bunce commenting on McClellan, he was actually recovering well at the Royal London when his sisters discharged him against the doctors advice. He suffered the brain trauma that caused his present condition back in the States. Still its very sad and clouds what was a fantastic fight.

King and Warren put them both there, the responsiblity should lie with them or any other promoter to support all fighters with injury for life. Because McLennan wouldnt be in the state he is now. Its very sad. I think the ref was way too over protective of Benn in the fist round, he stopped McLennan jumping on him after the knockdown if you watch it back again. If BHenn had sufffered a quick Ko loss, Mclennan would be fine today and Benn would have a loss on his record. Im a huge Benn fan but I think even he would have prefered that in hindsight

@auleleilesa Ref wasn't at fault here. The damage was by the time it became apparent he was in enough trouble to stop the fight. Benn was going for headshots all long, barely went for the body at all really.

i have watched this fight from a english post and a american post.
all i can say from the first round the two yank commentators are far to biased and twisted as the fight went on . then changed their tune to benn.
then when i watched it from the british commentators they were just as bad .

I'm not sure that I'll ever see two fighters with as much heart if I live for another 50 years. Benn knew the pain he would face by getting back into the ring and McClellan knew at the end of round 2 that this was going to be a war. Most fighters would have quit before this one got started.

Yes I watched the fight live and remember McClellan hanging his mouth piece out of his mouth and blinking uncontrollably during the final rounds. I also remember Ferdie Pacheco questioning McClellan's heart as well, so it wasn't just the English announcers. I told my girlfriend at the time, something is wrong with him. So not everyone thought he had "given up."
