The thing is that Machete is short for Machete de Braga which is what the Cavaquinho was (and still is) called on Madeira.

And saying that the Machete is the instrument that became the ukulele is only half true. The ukulele is the same size as the Machete or Cavaquincho but it is tuned like the rajão (given that the uke has only four strings and the rajão five).
