I'm rather torn between the idea of having a British version of One World Trade Center in London. On one hand, the idea of having the first Super-tall skyscraper in Britain is quite appetising, but on the other hand, the contrast between the old regency buildings of London and 21st century architecture is too great and it would seem like a blot on the landscape. But this is only my opinion.

JoshMufc101 i hope you forgive me and im sorry for what ive done. London is beautiful.
@g6h7o8s9t London has buildings that are hundreds and hundreds of years old. We prefer our skyscrapers to be more conservative, and blend in with the beautiful traditional surroundings rather than have a dick waving contest for who has the worlds tallest, most useless building. Dubai does have a 2700ft building, which still has 49 unoccupied floors.
@g6h7o8s9t 1000ft or 2700ft, it still looks pretty damn impressive. I saw it under construction a few weeks ago and even though it's not three quarters done it still looks HUGE! P.S. You wanna see how badly Dubai's been hit by the global recession, you think London has it bad...
@g6h7o8s9t Compared to the rest of the buildings in the EU, this is going to be the tallest, we're not aiming for the worlds tallest, we're aiming for a great landmark and a useful building with great eco features like the double skin design of the Gherkin.
@g6h7o8s9t shut up why you look this up then complain and argue with wjfox2006 what country do you come from cause Im guessing U.S.A cause your ignorant and lots of people in your country need to open there eye's and grow up cause your most of you are the same thats why you are the worlds most hated country 80% of the world infact hate America
@g6h7o8s9t Dubai went bust thanks to unnecessary developments like this! Dubai is crap, it has no rich history but London/England is full of rich history. DUBAI SIT DOWN!
@formerutuber sorry its only about 25 maybe 30 stories tall atm, expected to grow at 3 stories a week tho. its on my journey to work so i see it everyday
Ciglight, you need to brush up on your history! Both the city and canary wharf started pretty much as single-skyscrapers. Tower 42 otherwise known as the Natwest tower stood as the only true skyscraper untill the Gherkin was built. And 1 Canada Square or the Canary wharf tower stood alone for nearly a decade untill any other towers joined it. This is how clusters in London start.
i think it's in the wrong part of london it shud of been in the city or canary wharf it's gonna be an eyesore, scyscrapers dont work unless there in clusters!
@ciglite erm no, this area sorely needed a rethink and this is just the right project for it. also, the shard is a multi-purpose building and as such would have been out of place in canary wharf. i disagree that it's an eyesore, it seems to impose less on the surrounding area than a traditional box-shaped building and at least in renders works quite well in the london skyline.
People haven't been talking about this nearly enough. So many people are still oblivious to it, whereas I'm fairly confident THIS, rather than anything else, will form the visual focal point for the Olympics 2012, even if the building isn't open by then.
I think it will start to be talked about when it starts to show itself on the skyline, the core has only just begun to rise. It'll be the talk of the town in no time.
I can't wait for this to be built, it's gorgeous. A fantastic addition to the skyline, fits in beautifully. I hope no other tall buildings get built near it, it deserves to stand on its own.
Grr, all i say is hurry up and becombe the World's best city again. The UK needs its World recognition again, what London is, is not enough to be the best. Though London Town is the richest part of the World and its the financial Capital of the World.
Why is it called a bridge? I like the architecture. And since you disabled posting on the Burj Dubai video you had, just wanted to say thanks for posting such a cool vid. I NEED to see the burj dubai in person.
Yes, Dubai is basically sand and nothing else. London is a historic city, it doesn't need endless virtual 'dicks' pointing skywards. Tasteful buildings like this in with the old historic sites are fantastic though
thats true i guess but Dubia is floating on thin ice, vertually no exports, oil will run out there in 20 years and what happens when it's no longer then "in" place? its forgotten and when rich westerners stop going it will become nothing unless they act quickly...

What right have these developers to impose their crap designs on the places we live. What ever happened to democracy. This design is too aggressive and too big, its just going to upset people in what is a good looking town, hope it stays this way
It's called progress. Why don't you go and live in the countryside if you're so offended by it? And FYI... the Shard was voted the most beautiful skyscraper project anywhere in the world on a poll of thousands of people at SkyscraperCity dotcom. The project is also supported by three-quarters of local residents according to a survey. Plus they're rennovating the station. What is the matter with boring NIMBYs like you? Would you rather they kept the hideous concrete mess that was there before?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Why do you get to decide what's progress, what give you that authority. Oh it was voted, the public voted robbie williams as the second greates living britian. People who know about architecture should decided. this project effects more than just local residents who will benifit from the regeneration, it effects everyone who has to wake up in the morning at look at it, maybe i'll like it when its built but for now my point still stands
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
And don't be silly of course i don't like the over imposing concrete architecture of the past just as i don't like the modern stuff which makes this same mistake, it shows your ignorance that you think everyone who dislike buildings like this must be boring. there are some really elegant tall
modern buildings but this is not one of them its too tall and pointy to put it in a way you'll understand.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well charming might be a better word, yea there's some pretty bad buildings in london but over all its quite nice, got a lot of character anyway, especially where I live, charm is something which a lot of these new buildings lack and could ruin the uniqueness of our city
Charming isn't the word you're looking for either when talking about London Bridge - Sh*thole may be more apt. The train station in particular is an embarrasment.
Cook your a luddite, trying to preserve a vision of london that never was. London was never paris or prague. It was a mixed jumble of old and new, arguably a lot wealthier as a result. Paris is like a living museum, beautiful tho it is, it is stuck in the past. Building like this represent the future. That said i would agree some parts of london need protection, I would be the first to condemn it, if it was proposed to be build in say Hampstead....
Don't make an assumption on what I'm trying to preserve, I never claimed London was or should be a like Paris. I just have a problem with big buildings that wont appeal to everyone, because their size imposes the developers tastes on everyone else. These massive skyscrapers are like those of a city that feels the need to show off. London doesn't need to wave its wealth around like this its vulgar and that's my problem the size of the thing is not tastefully understated as london is at the moment
The UK is not trying to be like fucking Dubai, nobody wants to be like that hellhole. As a matter of fact, Dubai is copying off the United States, Europe and Asia, as far as skyscrapers are concerned. The engineers and architects who helped build the stupid Burj Dubai are European and American, not Arab. Does having the world's tallest building make you your country better? Not at all. Big ups to London, a city that deserves a beautiful skyscraper, unlike Dubai, an oasis in the middle of hell
I have to say though, the burj Dubai is.... the nicest looking skyscraper have i ever seen imagined, architectually beautiful. - but yeh damn right in what you say, lol
because it saves space to build upwards rather than outwards, imagine if there where no sky scrapers, the buildings would have to be soo wide to accomadate all the offices and such
Even Dubai's head of tourism said in numerous interviews, 20/20, 60 minutes, "U go to paris, london, chicago, NY and u look at the attractions and remember them. now we want u to come to Dubai and remember our city."
Want another one?
In a 60 minute interview when asked "why the boggest things in the world," Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum answered, "If you can have it in NY, y cant we?"
the construction of this project will take 4 or 5 years... so you're saying over the next 11 years they are going to have 19 projects running? that would mean not only finding the sites for 19 massive buildings, designing them and THEN building them - they would be doing at least 8 simultaneously?! That's such a ridiculous suggestion.
Skyscrapers are images of power and strength of a city, economy, and country. You cannot compare the 60's to the 2000's. If you hate them so much, don't watch this video, people have bad images of mid rise tower blocks because of the 60's and 70's, but people's opinions are changing for the better , stop being such a narrow minded person, and actually learn about skyscrapers instead of judging them, like Shard, before it and many others are even built. Skyscrapers aren't really terrorist targets
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
why do people like skyscrapers? they're horrible and we are going to regret allowing this crap to be built in the same way we regret the 60s happening, and 2,000,000 tourists a year? that a little ambitious with london turning into every other big city in the world tourism will cease to exist since no cities will have anything unique
People love skyscrapers because they are soaring, elegant structures which are more dramatic and eye-catching than bulky, shorter buildings. Some are among the most iconic man-made structures in the world, e.g. Chrysler Building, Bank of China Tower.
The Shard will be nothing like the 60s tower blocks you speak of. What an absurd comparison to make.
2m tourists is a realistic target - it will be a highly iconic landmark. People will still flock to London for a whole host of other reasons.
You can't compare London or all the United Kingdoom with United State
United State Is very, very, veryyy best, amazing, incredible (like you say).

@g6h7o8s9t London has buildings that are hundreds and hundreds of years old. We prefer our skyscrapers to be more conservative, and blend in with the beautiful traditional surroundings rather than have a dick waving contest for who has the worlds tallest, most useless building. Dubai does have a 2700ft building, which still has 49 unoccupied floors.

jamesgravil 1 year ago
@g6h7o8s9t Compared to the rest of the buildings in the EU, this is going to be the tallest, we're not aiming for the worlds tallest, we're aiming for a great landmark and a useful building with great eco features like the double skin design of the Gherkin.

This is how clusters in London start.
xtremeglider 1 year ago
i think it's in the wrong part of london it shud of been in the city or canary wharf it's gonna be an eyesore, scyscrapers dont work unless there in clusters!
ciglite 2 years ago
@ciglite erm no, this area sorely needed a rethink and this is just the right project for it. also, the shard is a multi-purpose building and as such would have been out of place in canary wharf. i disagree that it's an eyesore, it seems to impose less on the surrounding area than a traditional box-shaped building and at least in renders works quite well in the london skyline.

People haven't been talking about this nearly enough. So many people are still oblivious to it, whereas I'm fairly confident THIS, rather than anything else, will form the visual focal point for the Olympics 2012, even if the building isn't open by then.
tomsega 2 years ago 5
I think it will start to be talked about when it starts to show itself on the skyline, the core has only just begun to rise. It'll be the talk of the town in no time.

Yes, Dubai is basically sand and nothing else. London is a historic city, it doesn't need endless virtual 'dicks' pointing skywards. Tasteful buildings like this in with the old historic sites are fantastic though

very true
dubai has no history just money (well too much to be frank) but london has history.
london is the most unique city in the eu maybe even the world, all because of its history.

cook119 2 years ago
It's called progress. Why don't you go and live in the countryside if you're so offended by it? And FYI... the Shard was voted the most beautiful skyscraper project anywhere in the world on a poll of thousands of people at SkyscraperCity dotcom. The project is also supported by three-quarters of local residents according to a survey. Plus they're rennovating the station. What is the matter with boring NIMBYs like you? Would you rather they kept the hideous concrete mess that was there before?
wjfox2006 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Why do you get to decide what's progress, what give you that authority. Oh it was voted, the public voted robbie williams as the second greates living britian. People who know about architecture should decided. this project effects more than just local residents who will benifit from the regeneration, it effects everyone who has to wake up in the morning at look at it, maybe i'll like it when its built but for now my point still stands
cook119 2 years ago

And don't be silly of course i don't like the over imposing concrete architecture of the past just as i don't like the modern stuff which makes this same mistake, it shows your ignorance that you think everyone who dislike buildings like this must be boring. there are some really elegant tall
modern buildings but this is not one of them its too tall and pointy to put it in a way you'll understand.

Well charming might be a better word, yea there's some pretty bad buildings in london but over all its quite nice, got a lot of character anyway, especially where I live, charm is something which a lot of these new buildings lack and could ruin the uniqueness of our city
cook119 2 years ago
Charming isn't the word you're looking for either when talking about London Bridge - Sh*thole may be more apt. The train station in particular is an embarrasment.
madbob73 2 years ago 4

cook119 2 years ago
Cook your a luddite, trying to preserve a vision of london that never was. London was never paris or prague. It was a mixed jumble of old and new, arguably a lot wealthier as a result. Paris is like a living museum, beautiful tho it is, it is stuck in the past. Building like this represent the future. That said i would agree some parts of london need protection, I would be the first to condemn it, if it was proposed to be build in say Hampstead....
nograviti 2 years ago 7
Don't make an assumption on what I'm trying to preserve, I never claimed London was or should be a like Paris. I just have a problem with big buildings that wont appeal to everyone, because their size imposes the developers tastes on everyone else. These massive skyscrapers are like those of a city that feels the need to show off. London doesn't need to wave its wealth around like this its vulgar and that's my problem the size of the thing is not tastefully understated as london is at the moment
cook119 2 years ago
I agree..... the area needs this kind of investment....
nograviti 2 years ago 2
The UK is not trying to be like fucking Dubai, nobody wants to be like that hellhole. As a matter of fact, Dubai is copying off the United States, Europe and Asia, as far as skyscrapers are concerned. The engineers and architects who helped build the stupid Burj Dubai are European and American, not Arab. Does having the world's tallest building make you your country better? Not at all. Big ups to London, a city that deserves a beautiful skyscraper, unlike Dubai, an oasis in the middle of hell

Even Dubai's head of tourism said in numerous interviews, 20/20, 60 minutes, "U go to paris, london, chicago, NY and u look at the attractions and remember them. now we want u to come to Dubai and remember our city."
Want another one?
In a 60 minute interview when asked "why the boggest things in the world," Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum answered, "If you can have it in NY, y cant we?"

ministryod10 3 years ago
the construction of this project will take 4 or 5 years... so you're saying over the next 11 years they are going to have 19 projects running? that would mean not only finding the sites for 19 massive buildings, designing them and THEN building them - they would be doing at least 8 simultaneously?!

Skyscrapers aren't really terrorist targets

why do people like skyscrapers? they're horrible and we are going to regret allowing this crap to be built in the same way we regret the 60s happening, and 2,000,000 tourists a year? that a little ambitious with london turning into every other big city in the world tourism will cease to exist since no cities will have anything unique
scottishlowoflow 3 years ago
People love skyscrapers because they are soaring, elegant structures which are more dramatic and eye-catching than bulky, shorter buildings. Some are among the most iconic man-made structures in the world, e.g. Chrysler Building, Bank of China Tower.
The Shard will be nothing like the 60s tower blocks you speak of. What an absurd comparison to make.
2m tourists is a realistic target - it will be a highly iconic landmark. People will still flock to London for a whole host of other reasons.
wjfox2006 3 years ago
Its taller and has a better view than the london eye and that gets 3,000,000 people a year.
