The entire point of Skinny's death was to show that retaliation was pointless. They could have become so much more if they would just get their heads right, so what would revenge have gotten them except a life sentence? Besides, Tyler even mentions that PJ was headed to prison,so it wouldn't have brought Skinny back. It is actions of revenge that ensure those in a bad situation can never find there way out. Here, Mac decides he wants to do better. That is the choice that determines your life.

@EloquentChaos I disagree. The point of Skinny's death is to shed some light on reality. When people make or refuse to make decisions, they'll have to deal with the consequences regardless of their morality. Also, it reinforces the concept of elder siblings being a default role model for their younger siblings. Additionally, at some points in our lives we might think we are invincible because we've finally proven our worth, but even an ego can't stop a bullet. Revenge is good when you succeed.
