I'm looking for some advice, I have a Chevy Caprice with a standard limited slip differential, and I am thinking about installing a locker, but I am hearing negative things when it comes to highway driving. Especially going around sharp corners at low speeds. I live in Canada and a locking differential would be nice, but 95% of my driving is highway and I don't want to hear my rear wheels chirping going around corners. Is a Detroit Locker suitable for highway use in a full size car?
hey what kind of light bar is that on the front of your truck i really like it and it looks great, did you get it offline and iff so could you tell me the link?
Its not that bad. You dont notice at all while driving normal except in turns. If I roll through a turn its fine. If i'm on the gas in a turn then the inside wheel will skip . If i stomp the pedal in a turn then i'm drifting. HAHA. There are a few different lockers from Eaton though. Mine is always locked and will unlock in a smooth turn. Other lockers stay unlocked untill one wheel slips then it will lock up. I wanted the full lock for my use.
@motogmc10 alright thanks man. i like to concept of the detroit, seems like a solid option. im not real fond of the air lockers.... drilling a hole in the diff, air lines, and you have to have a compressor and what not.
@motogmc10 sweet. Some people have been saying that the drivability issues are amplified with a manual trans. So I wonder. but love your truck man, makes me happy seening some other 2wd's wheelin!!
I know of the Eaton Tru-trac and the Sure-trac lockers. Check out Eaton's website. It shows all the specs on the types of differentials. Mine is called the NO-spin, AKA Detroit Locker
Hey man, beautiful truck! I have an 03 avalanche z66 and im about to put a leveling kit plus 33 inch bfg all terrains on it. How capable do you think the truck would be considering its 2wd with those mods? I have the g80 in the back also. Any off roading advice would be greatly appreciated! I have a little mudding video on my channel but its nothing serious at all.
Hey thanx man. Well your Avalanche should do just as good as mine ya know.Plus Avalanche's have more weight balance than a pickup so you should get better traction over the rear wheels . So that thing should mob pretty good. Lockers make a world of difference. Just think, A locked 2wd can do alot more than an open diff 4x4. Pretty awesome
@motogmc10 Thanks for your reply man, and yeah! My avalanche gets better traction when going over an icy hill than my dad's 4wd f-150. Haha it freaks him out. Ill post a video as soon as the mods are done.
hi there, i hope you are doing well. i wanted to update you about our last conversation's topic "clutch and elictric fan" if you remember. i've installed the elictric fan the difference is +15 hp. the performance is awesome just by changing the fan! but i want to get the max out of the truck. if you have any feedback about "cam" i would highly appreciate sharing.
take in consideration that i use my truck on daily bases and travel long distances.
Glad you like the fans. Its amazing what difference you can feel. I dont have any personal experience with cams but i do know they make some good power and can even boost MPG. Just pay attention to specs because some require top end modifications as well. You dont want a big thumper cam.Just a mild one for daily use. Most manufacturers will point out the specific cam you would want for your personal taste. There is a good cam out there for you.
now im searching for the electric fans and i will change it with the old fan . and i will put the truck on the dyno to see the diff, but no need to change somtheing els with the new fans ????
Hey man. You dont have to do anything else with the fans unless you want to. I would recommend some thermal switches to activate them when it need to and ofcourse an inline fuse. And you mite want to wire them completeley independant from eachother so theres not so much load. But its a pretty simple deal and with the old fan and shrouds out of the way there is lots of room to work with.
Its from NFAB. They now have a couple different versions to choose from. This one and another one that replaces the whole front bumper. Also check out Addictive Desert Designs. They have a new awesome looking full front prerunner bar that bolts to the frame horns
i have same truck but reg cab .... i did alot of things on it . but i need to change the wheel whith somthing good for off road and the truck 2.5 leveling kit .. anther thing what your advice if i need more performance for off roading coz my truck has headers and muffler , programmer and its now 300 hp
I would say get an Intake kit and some kind of diff. locker if you dont already. Nothing compares to having both wheels locked up. MSD Ignition should have some coilpacks also for some extra juice. Also if yours has the mechanical fan like mine did, I would change it over to the Twin electric fan setup from other models.
@motogmc10 thank you for sharing the info. but i am wodering why would you change the mechanical fan to the Twin electric fan as long as it does not affect the heat at all ?
It wont affect the cooling at all, but it frees up some horsepower because the motor has to drive the mechanical fan , where as the electric fans dont. Mine used to wind up and get really loud because the fan was hauling ass with the RPM's slowing me down like a parachute. Now the electric fans just run smooth and have no affect on the pull of the motor anymore.

@YamahaWR200 : Yeah i know , i aired down the next time we went out. Just wanted to see the difference. I had to make it more fun. If i just do everything all easy then thats not fun at all. And the tires are perfect for what i need . These are best for all around traction. My truck isnt always in the same kind of terrain.
nice truck, im thinking of going with a powertraxx no slip, my truck looks awesome with the lift and 35's, but i can't go anywhere with that open diff. ....
chevyblazer454: Haha. yeah before i got the locker it was crap. Couldnt do a damn thing. Sucked at Pismo, Sucked in the dirt, Sucked everywhere. Now its awesome i can cruise around pismo and mud and its alot better . Sometimes its funny when im cruising around with my 2wd at pismo and im driving past a guy with an open diff 4x4 stuck. HAHA. I love it.
that what a trucks is sobust to do both wheels r going to spin that what a locker i rembear when i had a open real end in my K5 blazer then i got a spool now it like a tank but it dose it do a brt of good it u have no dane teeth on the tires [><]
2 wd offroading is not even embarassing. Its more of a challenge and hillarious when some fag in a 4x4 thinks hes got some dope shit with an open diff 4wd truck that cant do some things that my truck can do with its detoit locker. I bought the 3/4 ton because its stronger in every aspect and i use it for towing , but its a well rounded truck that can haul ass, haul loads and does pretty good offroad. I hope that answers your question. Ill never buy a half ton after owning this truck
If you were going to go Offroading, and not Hauling Trailers, which a 3/4 ton is used for, wouldn't it make more sense to get a 1/2 ton w/ 4wd??? 2wd offroading is quite embarassing isn't it?
