My Veetle Channel will have this song on my Retro Countdown next week as I play the hits from 6-24-67. Go To Veetle dot com, channels, music tab, Current & Classic Radio shows and listen, we have an email and you can ask us for whole shows!
Now I love Jerry B's version, & also loves Otis & Garnet Mimms renditions of this song. But I must say, that this version of For your precious love is sweeter & more soul grabbing then any of them that I have heard. Damn good job Mr. Toney.... damn good job.
Class IS class. It hurts me to know that he was not afforded the recognition that he deserved. It is in these circumstances that I would have liked to had the power to make the appropriate amendment to history. What an amazing singer! Keep the faith Mr. Oscar Toney Jr. Your presence on this world stage will never be forgotten. God bless, sir.
Oscar is actually a good friend of mine. its ashame that he retired and is now working as a security gaurd at anoutlet mall in alabama. but he is such a sweet soul and he still loves to sing this song everytime we hang out and jam at the music store.
My brother bought this album for my 18th birthday I was overwhelmed I thought Otis was good But OMG this version gives me chills like you dont know, Thanks Pete
This album is a classic. I bought the LP when it was a new release and it has always been one of my all-time favorites. Oscar Toney, Jr. was a local star here in Columbus, Ga. and, supposedly, still resides in the area. He and Cliff Ellis released an album in 2008 on Ripete records entitled " Over At Mary's Place" that is worth a listen.
I bought the LP in 1968 with what very little money i had. The girls in the shop were quite upset as it was the only copy they had! We shared a listen of the full album before i left the shop. One of my very top fave albums too!
This track is off the CD, which i didn't know existed till my GF bought it for me a few years ago. What a fantastic surprise that was!
This is one of those records you want the world to hear, 1st year at college 1969/70, I tried every where to get this as a single, eventually got it as an import .Pure soul, feeling, puts the hairs-up on the back of my neck even now!! Thank you door2yourheart
You know i Couldn't decide between Otis or Jerry had the better version but i heard this version 2 days ago and it is the greatest i have heard... my mom brought me up Listenen to Oldies like this And i am going to bet that as a 19 year old kid i have a better understanding of love and romance, my generations music is just trash compared to this lol
pleeease someone put up the whooole version with the best part, the whole ending!!! still i love this clip and oscar's version is the only that can move me this way...for all you heartbroken sorry sobs, this song is for all of us!! ;)
Thank you for your kind reply haramzadehprod. Unfortunately this is the only version by Oscar, and its a shame it ends so soon. It was Oscars audition piece for signing up with Papa Don Schroeder. The strings were added later. I originally bought the album, For Your Precious Love on vinyl, then years later bought the cd. Some gorgeous songs on there, ALL of the covers are better than the originals! Any day now, dark end of the street, moon river etc. Spine tingling!
Thanks for the great comment Dukester. Its a shame that Oscars actual singing is so short on this track. It was his audition for Papa Don Schroeder, and this first take was accepted as more than suitable!
Papa Don added strings and angelic vocals after the session.
OK carlaki, thank you so much for your appreciative comments. I didn't get to post "a little love"yet, but sure you have been moved to play the whole awesome album!
Ha ha, thats a anekdote that should adourn the album sleeve!! So good the store girls requested one last play before you departed with it!!! and many thanks for Dark end of a Street upload!! I salute you sir and your taste in music!!!
ps, im 36 but remember my father playing this albulm constantly, had to own it myself. perhaps you can post the letter Otis Redding sent to him after hearing this albulm!!! pppsss Dark end of a street..best version in my opinion
Cheers carlaki! I can remember vividly the time i bought this album in 1967. The feeling of owning something very special! The girls in the shop were quite upset when i bought it, and asked could they play it one last time as it was the only copy left.
Totally agree that Oscars version of Dark End of the Street is the BEST version, and i have posted that on here too!
This is the best Albulm i have in my collection and i have more records then sand on a shore. well done for this post, only thing is now I'll be up playing vinyl all night lol.
Thanks chuck! Once the rap is over, and he kicks in the singing, I get a shiver down my spine! Then before ya know it, its all over! This was the first song he ever recorded, and it was done in one take......to the total amazement of the producer! Papa Don was just seeing if and how Oscar could sing. He added the strings later.
Oh my goodness! This makes me 16 again!! I'm not really 56!! Beautiful, just beautiful... been my all time favourite song for 40 years! Some going huh?
Aww! Thank you for your lovely comment, i am so glad it means as much to you as it does to me! It is a totally awesome performance, done in just one take, then strings added, his first ever solo recording.
