@Nickatimes it was used before but jesus dying on a cross made it significant to christians because he loves us enough to go through the most painful way of dying for us. the cross was also used for criminals and he was nothing like a criminal - he never did a wrong thing in his life but he took on our failings on that cross when he forgave us for our sins. thats why christians see it as such an important symbol, because jesus did that amazing thing for each of us on the cross.
