  • i like banging heroin and nodding off in public dumpsters, then waking up and finding my meal in the trashbag next to me.

  • @samelliotto Me TOO!

  • @samelliotto I prefer to nod off in shit covered bathrooms, then waking up and finding my meal in the toilet next to me

  • remember buying the flipside to this in the UK at the time - Wipe Out, but this was much better - great song, great lyrics. 1963 I think.

  • im from huntington beach :)

  • great song. lol but have you ever heard a gayer song?

  • @Jakpeacemaker

Supposedly they wrote the lyrics on the back of a napkin while trying to figure out what to put on the "B" side of a 45 record they were cutting, and it took off for some reason. Yeah this song sort of sux, I remember when it came out, it just had that unexplainable something that sounded good on a cheap crappy AM radio

  • Written by Frank Zappa

  • @societyforrealmusic Haha, seriously!

  • I was not brought here by Cracked.

  • "Wipe Out" on a Dot 45 brought me here

  • Reminds me Dead Milkmen

  • This music is timeless, don't know why its not played more often, beats the shit out of modern music. Tarintino sure likes it, check out 'Kill Bill 1" its all the rage!

  • hi cracked readers

  • Ahhh... This is MUCH nicer than wipeout!

  • Did this influence rap?

  • The Cramps!

  • this is one of the best oldies sonjgs

  • @Berengier817

cracked brought me here as well.

  • @Berengier817 me too haha

  • what are u talking about this song is about Joseph Paluseo, the meanest baddest surfer. It is rumored that he has surfed his one millionth wave last tuesday...He was last seen in costa rica. Let me know if u have seen him.

  • Possibly the first (almost) punk song

  • @davidkeys100 as a hardcore punk fan of bands like ramones the casualties sex pistols and the clash, i would very much agree. Punk has alot to give tribute to surf.

  • Does anyone know the label and record number for the long version? I just have the short version on DOT and would like to get this one. Thanks.

The longer version of Wipe Out is good also.

  • WOW! I thank you for the post. One of my favorites back in the day. Heck today also.

  • old school surf music was the best

  • The rim shots make it!

  • Great upload!!! Should a person think about his desires or yours?

  • 1 person flipped over and got attacked by a shark while surfing!!! Then immediately after that the person got their custom made surf board cracked over head!!!

  • wow, i haven't heard this since around 1963/4..

dancing at the orchid, purley, south london

    a real mod tune :)

  • 1 person flipped over :-))

  • @incpuable Good one.

  • @NcicHit2 ;-)

  • Interesting, I didn't know there was any other version of this song but the "long" one. I first heard this one on the Hard Rock Cafe's Surf compilation in 1998 (I think), but I was lucky to see The Surfaris perform this one live at Silver Springs (Ocala, FL) back in 2001. (Jan & Dean performed after them.)

  • @GOFLuvr The "short" version is / was the album version.

  • @wilsonjd52 Ah yes, I just found that one here on YouTube, too. (And shorter by just one verse.) Thanks for putting up with the sarcasm, but I figured I was safe if I mentioned having seen The Surfaris before. ;-)

  • i still have this 45!

  • This is LUSCIOUS! If you don't know of them, search out Insect Surfers and the Halibuts. Mid to southern California Surf Bands who have succeeded in achieving da kine.

  • Wasn't the B-side of Wipeout?

    Mike

  • @myanelli

Yup! I played it even more often than Wipeout too. Love it.

  • these guy have souls. compare to ke$ha.

  • @wishicudsk8 there is no comparison. Ke$ha isn't even a musician

  • @GuitarGuy0008 i no man. it all computer generated stuff and she probably has a thousand writers

  • CHARLIE DON'T SURF!!!

  • The song was sung by Ron Wilson, the drummer at that time, who has since passed on.

  • <3 <3 <3

  • <3 <3 <3

  • This is great! I wish you had let it play just 3 more seconds so we could hear the final reverb though

  • Wow !!

  • such a badass song

  • i can hang 10 and im 11

  • I'm assuming the one dislike vote was by accident.

  • i think this song would be perfect for a car trip in this beautiful summer weather

  • One of these fellas' moms babysat my dad when he was little. When we went to Round Table Pizza by Staters' (in Glendora) back when it had a jukebox, we would always play this song, and my dad would recount listening to the Surfaris practicing in the garage whenever he was being babysat. :)

  • Ah yes, I had a 45 with Wipeout on one side and Surfer Joe on the other,.

  • lord, I haven't heard this in 40 years

  • Long time ago !!

  • 6.6.10.

    Re: oldies on radio.

"Surfer Joe" was played on UK radio a while back, on 'Sounds Of The Sixties" BBC Radio 2, Sats. 0800-1000hrs, hosted by Brian Matthews, who is at least in his 70's.

He plays requests, and a great deal of obscure stuff, both UK and US, and it is really great, hearing stuff, unheard or never heard of for 40 years and over.

He played Surfer Joe, because a listener wrote in and said he used to hear it on the juke box, at his local cafe, back in the 60's.....

  • Always Liked The Part Where They Mention My Home Towne -- HUNTINGTON BEACH !!!!!

  • Did any of these guys actually surf?

  • @93tomb I bet if they did they were the best.

  • @93tomb

I used to surf when i was stationed in the military in Florida, but you cant hang ten very well with 4 foot waves. I moved to Hawaii (Honolulu) and go to the North Shore,

where there are 30-40 foot waves in the months of October, dec and January. if you go there, check to see when the women have their surfing tournament. Thats fun to watch too.

  • @93tomb

The sure did! I know because I grew up with them. The lived in Glendora Ca. and spent more time on the waves up and down the Cali coast then they did at home.

  • Cool. I dig it!

  • my first record / 45' green vinyl...age 4

  • Woops i meant 2:51

  • I love the part where his voice cracks 2:53, it makes me laugh everytime

  • I also bought the 45 rpm of Wipeout but it took me a week or so to check out the flip side. I was stunned because I didn't know the Safaris actually had vocals on any songs. I was living in Huntington Beach at the time, which is site of the surfing competition in the song. I thought that was really cool,

  • Wipeout was the b side Surfer Joe was the A side and the original hit

  • ...makes me want to take out the old longboard and try to "Hang Ten" !

    ... very nice!

  • Side Awas SURFER JOE / Side B was WIPE OUT

  • surferr joee ho hooo, go man go ho hooo

    nice...

  • In Vancouver Canada it was Wipeout you would hear over the radio but in my parents dining room you would here Wipeout's flip side "Surfer Joe"! READ ON.....

  • @Ezdduf4kuZ Vancouver area was the greatest place in the 50's through 80's Bar None. Beaches , boating , sking and the very best clunbs on the planet. Vancouver is still the koolest place on the westcoast.

I learned to play drums with the Surfaris.

  • I bought this record back in 1961 with money I made from my paper route. . Anyway I bought the record 4 Wipeout & it was on side A and was getting all the airplay. When I flipped it over which I always did and played side B I was surprized, here was a song I liked better than the actual #1 hit that was being played on the radio..Wipeout. Anyway I was playing side B on my record player while they were playing wipeout., I luved it more than Wipeout..& I thanku 2 for sharing a hit that wasn't

  • One of the songs that really got me into vocal Surf Music. Stunning in it's simplicity, yet totally amazing to listen to.

  • Dedicated to Fucking MaraJohn (MaraJoe)

  • Back in the sixties, there were times you couldn't turn on the radio station and not hear this.

  • Live at my Junior High School before they broke out. God I am getting old, it was 1962.

  • Great song--this one can be added to the list of other greats that "oldies" stations never play! It seems they'd rather bombard the airwaves with "Heard it through the Grapevine" 100 times a day...they should add songs like these for some more variety!

  • @galoon Over here in the UK we have a station called Magic1161, we are continually bombarded by tracks from the 70's 80's and very few tracks from the 60's or earlier, through the night you can get good music, for instance we are hammered by Scott McKenzie, San Francisco, so much I liked it then, I hate it now, if its Magic its the 50's 60's and some of the 70's, I hope somebody from Magic reads this, as there are a lot of youngsters now turning to the music we listened to at their age

  • @galoon I agree with that. That's why I collect my own music and come here to The Tube to listen to good stuff.

  • @galoon My oldies station played this to death. Tons of surf music and doo-wop, barely any Motown or psychedelic. I guess it depends on one's taste.

  • @galoon You're exactly right, all the same old songs played, why not play the songs like these......

  • @galoon God Damn I could not agree with you more,,,,,,,I don't even want to get started on that one, but you called that one absolutely right...

  • @galoon Those limited playlists are why so many of them have gone off the air........

  • Our radio stations usually played the short version. It was great when they put this one on.

  • Next to Dick Dale's insane musical library, this is the king of surf toons....

  • i remember this song when i was a kid - loved it then and still do - great fun song

  • what year did this song come out?

  • totally tubed

  • "I saw him one day

    Flyin' down the road

    With twenty-six surfboards

    And a hundred pound load........."

A hundred pound load?..... of what, Joe...? HMMMmm?

  • Could somebody tell me why Wipe Out gets so much airplay and this (a much better song) gets little if any?

  • wipe out is much better

  • you are so wrong

  • One of the best!

  • I was surfin Rincon in 62 --

    - Long Live the Summerland Surf Club ---

  • I surf...

  • joeyisapayne, i simply said flip side of wipe out ,read it, lets get things straight, sounds like u r a real self appointed know it all

  • I believe it reached no 1 twice, Wipeout

  • Comment removed

  • it was some years later Wipeout reached no 1(for the second time) I remember because was living in California in the 60s. However, Wipeout is something they just threw together for the other side of Surfer Joe.''.

  • I was stationed at Camp Pendleton for almost 18 years and I miss it. The surfing was great and there was a lot of other good things to do.

  • I discovered this record at the carwash. What a great song!

  • surfer joe was on the flip side of the surfaris hit wipe out, 45 record. i learned to play drums on those songs, back in the early 1960's.yes i am still p[laying the drums.also guitar and vocals

  • this sound could only be born in so cal! the glory days of surfing never to return! my uncles would tell me stories when trestles used to be marine property and nixons house was right off christinitos! what a trip!!

  • when you start collecting surf music this is one of the first songs you come up with and it always sounds cool

  • does Anybody have the ORIGINAL 45 of This , on the D.F.S. Record Label ... I'm not sure if the "Long Version" was on the Second Pressing (the Princess Label) ... I've never seen a Copy of the "Long Version" on the DOT Records Label at-all.

  • This song has always made me chuckle. I like it thought. Only one thing that's not right... Since Surfer Joe in the Marine Corps, he wouldn't do KP...it's called Mess Duty in the corps...and he probably got Office Hours (Article 15) for going to Trestles which was off limits to Marines for many years. At least it was off limits in the late 70s/early 80s when I served. I hear that's not the case anymore but not sure...

  • Jim Pash is my uncle. I never met him cause of my low life dad. Now he passed away. I went to his funeral, even if I never met him :(.

    R.I.P: Uncle Jim

  • I think he was this Sax player What a great musician.!!HE still rockin on youtube!!

  • Yeah, he was the Sax Player.

  • Well there are many We never meet in the physical world.. I love his Sax playing on Point Panic and Waikiki run...I think he played some guitar on the newer stuff..

Call yourself lucky when you hear him you are hearing the best of him...It is in the music,,

  • Well I should of met him in the physical world, he's my blood uncle.

  • Semper fi, Joe. OOrah!

  • Rumor is that this song is about Joe Scalion, a So Cal surfer in the 60s. Joe was well known for his surfing abilities, went into the Marines, did two combat tours in Vietnam, came home, and worked for many years for the Forest Service fighting fires. Stories about Joe on the fire line are legendary on South Zone hotshot crews. He retired in the 90s, and rumor is he now lives in Hawaii where he still surfs. Go, man, go!

  • @stklr66 That would make sense, I've had the LP with this song since 1982, and always wondered. My fave of the Surfaris vocals. Surf on Joe!

  • @stklr66 Hate to disappoint because it's a great story about Surfer Joe still out there surfing, but Bob Berryhill says Ronnie Wilson wrote the song after literally dreaming it up in 1962.

  • "Poor Joe" ended up surfing the waves off the beaches of Vietnam...

  • i have record

    coment is japanese please.

  • greetings in japan my friend--was there twice in my navy days, during the 1970's

    LOVE TO COME BACK

  • Sounds like Winnie the Pooh singing...

  • Winnie the Pooh doesn't sing!!!

  • Huntington Beach!!

  • Mr. Berryhill is a teacher at Fullerton College --in the automotive dept. He and the group --consisting of his wife and sons --play for some of the school's events. Once I get my video tapes digitized I can upload my interview.

  • I loved this song! My brother hated it, so naturally I had to play it every chance I could. (You gotta do what you gotta do)

  • Those dudes have some vulcan ears. lol

Too crowded at Sweetland Gardens...Where have the years gone???

  • listening to this song and the beach boy songs that were out at the time, i knew i had to get to southern calf and join the marines...i did, in 67 boot camp in diego then stationed back there for a year as a 2841 ground radio tech, then to da nang...i love our country love the marines loveeee san diego and la jolla and survived nam to enjoy allof this..........jim, attorney 59

  • I have my sister's 45 somewhere. First rock and roll song I remember, late 1963.

  • When they recorded this song in 1963, this song was on the A side. They needed a B side so just for fun and/or for a filler they recorded Wipeout. The rest is history.

  • THANKS for posting this - never knew there was this other version, better sounding than the LP version.

  • Love the long version.

  • i love this song
