In 1985, Nice triathlon was not a Ironman yet, but the world cup for long distance... In the comments they speak of a distance of 2 miles for the swim and 20 miles of run... And the first arrival is in 5:23:13 !
These guys were great. I raced against them back in the 80s (never beating them I might add) and they were fantastic athletes that dominated the sport for a long time. They were very motivating to me as I a young aspiring pro triathlete. Thank you for this video!
I've thought of this '85 event since first watching it. The entire run visual has been etched in my mind for 25 years. Molina's struggle, Tinley's game effort and pat on Molina's backside as he ran by and Allen's unflinching focus. I didn't really need to watch this to "see" it but have looked for this video no less.
This was the 2nd ever triathlon (other than Ironman) that I had ever seen televised back in the day. It was my first year racing, I was 16, and it was stunning to see the constant pace Allen & Tinley chewed up the course with. I was simply stunned to see how they could run a long distance course. Their running cadence was both inspirational and demoralizing as I had never run anything so swiftly. Thank you socalrider909 for uploading.
