  • You've just been Lynch'd sucka

  • Comment removed

  • Euripides never spoke of this, but he knew!

  • Funny is:

    1. Put into you brain: "a man killed his wife and got free"!

2, Then feed it this: You are innocent, she did it! She's to blame!

    3. Caught in circus/theater/hell etc. heaven and this is what they say: "I'm in your house right now!"

    4. The end; The film is the prison, the fact is prison, anyone knows is prison, you yourself is prison - get out you wannabe ape, sicko and strangler!! MW

  • @DrWeiland GODS: drunk and final, hm, hmm: "Put into "your" brain - that is!

  • Why don't they just shoot his tires out?

  • @max15military cause this is a dream you mothefucka

  • At the ending, I didn't care if I had really understood the movie or not. I liked it. I liked the ending.

  • David Bowie doing his best Scott Walker impersonation.

  • Brilliant ending. Bill Pullman pulled it of in this film.

  • I'm through trying to find out what really is happening in this movie. I don't want to know. I realize that I like the feeling of not knowing, that feeling of mystery is all that I need. It feels like I'm am on that highway just going as fast as possible, that never ending lost highway.

  • Dick Laurent is dead.

  • reality is what an individual is taking for real. countless individuals have countless realities ....or none....

there's no such thing as THE reality...

  • He's either turning into Sean Penn or David Lynch at the end.

  • @Applemask Looks more like David Arquette.

  • Legendary cast. Bill Pullman, Patricia Arquette, Robert Loggia, Gary Busey, Richard Pryor, Robert Blake and Marilyn Manson all in the same film!

  • Lynch admitted that, inspired by OJ, it's how a man can can completely disconnect himself from what he's done and create this whole other identity/world for himself. Of course, not understanding is half the fun.

  • this film was really confusing to me. can somebody please explain it to me like if im a 3 year old. How does Fred turn into Pete, and whats up with the Mystery Man??

  • @RickSquadron The commonly accepted theory (no Lynch film has a definitive answer mind you):

Pete didn't exist. Pete was created by Fred as a mental mechanism to cope with murdering his wife. Fred instead turned himself into Peter, an innocent, sexually potent and attractive man who commits a crime out of necessity, not impotency and jealousy. (Lynch would pull this same plot device in Mulholland Dr.)

The Mystery Man I believe represents a dark side of Fred.

  • @RickSquadron It helps to think in the context that Lynch wrote this story. Lynch wrote it after the OJ Simpson murder, he was trying to explore how a loving husband can kill his wife and then delude himself and his own conscience into thinking he was innocent and justified.

I think he does remarkably well on that count.

  • I think that's Mr. Eddy's Mercedes, because they have the same license plate number. This means that Fred Madison, Mr. Eddy, and Pete Dayton, are all the same person; they are all different manifestations of Fred's psyche.

  • @thudmother Don't get to carried away lol. Fred steals Dick Laurent's car after kidnapping him at the Lost Highway hotel. The Mystery Man is another manifestation of Fred's psyche tho.

  • best movie ever made and i love the david bowie song so much. thanks a lot

  • if only the rest of the movie was as good as this scene!

  • I think this movie is not meant to be solved.

It's a film about love, hate, jealousy and dark side of our subconsciousness. The atmosphere and emotion is the key. It's in the same vein as Fire Walk With Me, where no truly logical solution is available.

  • im getting the impression that this is a paradox of some sort. ive never seen the whole movie tho. Why does he transform and how?

  • @djbethell Or maybe the opening scene of "Dick Laurent is dead" was reality. The wife may have put a hit on him and the hitman was coming back to tell her the job was done. Notice the voices were different?

  • I honestly think this was my favorite ending to a movie I've ever seen

  • it's because David Lynch is a head of time. critics seem to always pan his films but that doesn't stop them for being masterpieces of the surreal.

  • DETECTIVE: Do you own a video camera?

    RENEE: No. Fred hates them.

FRED: I like to remember things my own way.

DETECTIVE: What do you mean by that?

FRED: The way I remember them. Not necessarily the way they happened.

  • Trent Reznor really needs to score more, he's astonishing at it! <3

  • It's all about Fred's subconsciousness

also Mistery Man= Fred Madison they're both the same

  • @chinozamoralex

I don't think it's that easy to explain. The first appearance of Mystery Man is at party, when Renee is still alive. Andy sees him too and notes that "he's a friend of Dick Laurent". Later, Renee talks about her previous job at Mr. Eddie's house.

Also, pay attention to words spoken by police officers just before the final chase.

I'm still in doubt about who is "real" person in this movie and who is not.

  • i have this soundrack genius

  • So I guess the whole of the film only happened in his head except for the killing of his wife due to jealousy. In his head he finds a way to find the ones who turned her into the object of his hate and kill them too, as a way to justify his actions...he then constantly runs away from the consequences of his behaviour by inventing new egos while ressuscitating her into a new persona (the blonde). Yeah that could well be a way of seeing it. That'd be perfect actually.

  • @Thermidor007 Jealousy/her betrayal

  • Comment removed

  • comme ça plus besoin de se taper le film.... merci bertrand : )

  • Anyone notice the "Buyer/Swing" credit for Eric DaRe, who played Leo Johnson on "Twin Peaks"?

  • wow, cool and all but you missed the best part of the final scene, when fred whispers "Dick Laurent is dead"

  • @rulitopechocho agreed, best part of the scene that was

  • "Now I want you to go home, and study that motherfucker!!!" I wish there were more drivers like that to punk tail gaters.

  • very awesome movie.. took me awhile to figure out what was happening in the movie, a great work of art this movie is.

  • Dick Laurent is dead

  • havent seen the movie but this scene was great, a lot ot interesting frames

  • When David Lynch visited my college in Ballyfermot Dublin a lot of the students kept wispering into his ear "Dick Laurent is dead" just to see his reaction.

  • No happy ending here.

  • @Silvertrine lol

  • Dick Laurent is dead....

  • Comment removed

  • great!!!!!!!!

  • "Driver Down" is actually credited to Trent Reznor....most would argue that Trent IS Nine Inch Nails. Also, "I'm Deranged" is a reprise mix and not the actual track from the Outside album.

  • Driver Down 1st appeared on the Quake 1 soundtrack... which was also done by Trent Reznor under NIN.

  • nope. sorry. "Driver Down" was not on the Quake soundtrack. look it up.

  • Okay, everyone, even Lynch says that the song "The Perfect Drug" is in this movie, supposedly at the end. Where??? I didn't hear that fucking song at all, and I was very disappointed with it. Please shed some light on this dullema.

  • during the tail-gater chase scene.

  • @ToastmasterJFK ya ffor like a milisecond :( , i thought the perfect drug was a song about racing and the lost highway was a racing movie.. oh well. both are still great

  • I've heard it's all about dissociative fugue....look it up. No room to explain it here. Whatever it's about I still liked it more than Mulholland Dr.

  • Man in electric chair being executed. Tries to invent a new personna to escape; scene in cell - changes into Pete, and then as Fed again in the scene in the car at the end, but he can never escape the burn from the perpetual electric chair. Fugue is a piece of music that starts as one thing, changes into another but always has to come back to the original piece - no escape! A psychogenic fuge is the same thing in a mental capacity. Trust me I've been there.

  • @djbethell Good theory, but how do you explain the videos being sent to their door? Those were real.

  • @cradlehead23 The videos are messages from his subconscious about what he has done. They are a as real and unreal as his subconscious allows. This is the interpretation he is slowly informing himself of. The videos are sent by himself; by his subconscious. Remember he has already told himself at the beginning "Eddie Laurent is dead", so he has already killed his wife at this point too. The rest is delusion and illusion in a desperate attempt to escape the horror he has committed.

  • @cradlehead23 its his reality in his eyes

  • Thanks for posting this on here. It's one of my favourite movies. Unfortunately the DVD of it I have has terrible video quality, the transfer they did for that particular release is just awful. Great film, great clip.

  • They have released a new ACTUAL anamorphic widescreen transfer to replace that DREADFUL pan and scan version that has been kicking around forever. Expect to pay around $25 for it though.

  • the 6.9 is a classic...

  • Some people have an opinion about this ending, this was Fred's imagination just before he got electrocuted on an electric chair because of he's wife murder, he was able to reincarnate another person just to escape he's certain doom. Although I don't like to think like that, Fred was exorcizing it's demons riding forever in a constant pursuit lost on the dark corners of he's soul forever and ever, my favorite movie, sometimes I even think that the movie is reading my mind, which scares me...

  • "sometimes I even think that the movie is reading my mind, which scares me"

I left the cinema on my 1st viewing, when he sees the clip of himself over his wife's cut-up body. Why? I suddenly knew it would end right at the beginning! "Dick Laurent is dead" And how? I'd a psychogenic fugue @ 17 & 14 years later my mind remembered the situation & I freaked totally. I ran from the cinema and took an hour to regain who I thought I was (not easy). But I love Lynch for getting that process so right.

  • shame or not, I did not understand this film.

  • Have another go. When you get it, your mind will be well and truly blown. Don't give up. I promise it will be worth it!

  • cool video. but some important info is missing in this posting.

the NIN's song is followed by the song , "I'm Deranged" by David Bowie. that Bowie's song is used for the famous openning scene of this movie too.

David Lynch said that once when he happened to listen to the song from David Bowie's 95 album "Outside", he got a strong inspiration for his movie, "Lost Highway".

  • actually it sounded a bit like Rammstein because of the heavy and repeating guitars.

  • It's not Rammstein, corazon. It's Nine Inch Nails Trent Reznor's "Driver Down".

  • Based on "I like to remember things my own way, not necessarily the way they happened" the story is about a guy in the electic chair minutes away from his death, thinking of the things he did. Obviously he is twisted, probably because he found his wife cheating on him and also discovered that she was a porstar...or he invented that to justify his crime. Either way, I loved this movie because it its been three days since I saw it and I cant get it out of my head.

  • to me, the whole movie is about a dark path of the guy's mind, one of the paths that haunt your life and you cant distinguish the what's real,we lose ourselves in our parallel thoughts, in the truths we hide deep in us as we cant face them.we can only achieve happines in our own realities, creating an objective universal scope for life based on love without fear where everything can be faced.

  • this AAAAAWOONNNNSSSSSSS

  • THIS MOVIE AND DAVID LYNCH OWN SO HARD!

  • so i' m deranged.............

  • Ooooo I love the haunting way David Bowie's voice echoed from the night

  • Iknow, that's so great!

  • David Lynch è un genio

  • he got electrocuted, didnt he?

  • genial una de las mejores de david linch, encanta esta pelicula, y te felicito que le muestres a la gente, una pieza imperdible

  • like a trip...best's lynch movie,,and greats songs...

  • ahhhhhh!! like my life...lol

  • This is one of the most haunting movies ever made.

  • HA manson and twiggy were in this! nice

  • I..dit not get it....

  • YO NUNCA ENTENDI ESTA PELICULAAAA

  • Lynch is a GENIUS- 'Nuff Said!!!!!

  • This movie is based on a true story....

  • Inspired by the OJ Simpson case. David Lynch mentions it in an at least one interview.

  • moj naj best film ...

  • no hej aj mne sa pacil (hlane twiggy s mansonom ale no) lenže podstata mi nejako usla... daleko daleko prec....

  • so brilliant this movie....i could explain it but it would probably take a long time

  • There are so many takes on this movie but I see this film as a man in an electric chair being executed & in those final moments he tries to escape what he did. His psyche invents a new character & a new life for himself but he always comes back to his real story and what he really did. The final scene is him right back in the chair. He evens goes to his own door to tell himself what he has done (which sets him on the highway to truth). I find this film truly horrifying but complete genius work.

  • My thoughts.

An amazing movie. And GOD the soundtrack is just divine.

  • Comment removed

  • @djbethell

Those are my thoughts exactly...well the 2nd part of the movie, at least.

  • Awesome movie!

  • I just dont understand why so many people think this movie sucks...it was the first David Lynch film i saw and its still my favorite. It just grips you from beginning to end. Plus it has some of the most memorable scenes of any movie i've seen recently...the mystery man at the party...the road rage scene...the final scene. critics ned to give this movie a break. anyone with me?

  • I agree!

Was my first Lynch film too!

  • Mine too, also my favorite.

  • Totally with you!

  • I will allways be with you!

  • Agreed!

I love this Movie, and was my first Lynch film, too.

  • You've taken the words right out of my fingertips.

  • MD is just a LH2

  • yeah but obviously MD is better.

  • I wouldn't say "better", but less gloomy. Lost Highway is much violent, gross, shocking and mysterious (which can probably explain why it's harder to understand the meaning of Lost Highway than Mulholland Drive). It's a matter of taste I guess, but I prefer Lost Highway.

  • I would hardly say that Mulholland Drive was less gloomy..

  • They are pretty much the same movie.

  • In the end, no, but at least the first 2/3 seem a lot less gloomy. That's probably what makes the rest so dark.

  • @pigeonapocalypse and rammstien music in it too!

  • @pigeonapocalypse ...people don't want to think. LH is brilliant.

  • @pigeonapocalypse I believe a lot of it has to do with way people are when it comes to cinema in general. Movie making was meant to be an art, but people expect movies to fit their predetermined constructs, and because of that they don't understand movies that are different and don't fit to the "normal" ideals of film making. Honestly, I believe David Lynch is the master of taking his thoughts, no matter how deranged they are and turning them into brilliant scripts, and of course films.

  • @acelovesfleas well put. I completely agree

  • Any1 local to LA? which highway is this?

  • 7...?

  • this is my favorite movie ever

  • Awesome film awesome music. Having done something so bad that his mind can't face it Fred has "Pcychogenic Fugue". A disassociative disorder where personalities take over to hide the pain but they all end up with same result (Renee/Alice is dead). At least according to Lynch (though I have para-phrased it into a completely different observation in its simplistic definition but more descriptive perhaps for the non-insane people).

  • "the unit publicist, happened to find it in some medical journal or something. She showed it to us, and it was like Lost Highway. Not literally, but an interior thing can happen that's very similar. A certain mental disturbance. But it sounds like such a beautiful thing - 'psychogenic fugue.' It has music and it has a certain force and dreamlike quality I think it's beautiful, even if it didn't mean anything. " Sounds like the similarities were pointed out after. Not as an inspirtation.

  • The film has the feeling of being in a vicious circle.

Getting lost in a vicious circle.

The highways, sunsets, jazz music, video cameras, ... all contribute to the feeling or mood of the film.

What is, without doubt, the most important thing in Fred's midnight trip on the highways ... Followed by flickering lights and shrill, deafening sirens.

  • Masterpiece

    Lynch is a genius

  • At 1:15 he is in the electric chair being executed...

  • One of the best films ever....

  • My favorite ending of any film. Dont be like Fred, Fred is in hell.

  • awesome and the part scared the shit out of me =]

  • the key thing in this movie is: "you'll NEVER have me..." this movie is orgasmatic!

  • ORGASMATIC...love that word! :-)

  • I really can not understand why 90% of the critics rave about "Mulholland Drive" while at the same time dont even mention this masterpiece? It seems better not only in terms of innovation but in terms of elaboration, atmosphere and that hard-to-be-defined element that have only very, very few films.

When I made the list of my all-time favourite films, this jewel was at number 7.That was a year ago and today it would probably be even higher on that list.

  • True, but both are great...Plus I think Mulholland is easier to figure out(if that can be believed!!)

  • Have you read "Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce?

I do agree with you that they didn't review this film favorably enough compared with their favorable reviews of Mulholland Drive. But film critics don't know everything. Then again, atmosphere and that hard-to-define element are largely based in time. The answer I'd give is "timing" in our particular fad-driven culture.

  • I have actually. Extremely potent and influential bit of writing that by Bierce.

If you wanna see the ultimate Homage to that oft cast-aside story, look at the Adrian Lynne Movie "Jacob's Ladder".

And if you are really pedantic on After Life stuff, look at "Brainstorm" and "Ghost". All written by Bruce Joel Rubin.

  • Hows come you only have the last scene from this film?Any chance you'll get the rest of it uploaded?BC I would really like to see this film again. Thanks

  • God this film is awesome! tho muholland drive and blue velvet are my favorite films by him

  • very the last impressive music of this ending title which is followed by Nine inch nails'

music is the famous "I'm Deranged" by David Bowie.

and this song was used samely on the openning

title of this film. this song is perfectly matched with these scenes. two genius david!

  • David Lynch is a genius. Magnificent...

  • I don't get it.

  • you have to watch the movie like five times, maybe more before you can fully understand what's going on. the part where frank straight up disappears and is... i guess replaced, always throws me off.

  • I'd love to hear your take!

  • One of the my favorite Lynch movies. I really like David Lynch' dreamlike story flow.

  • definitely my favourite david lynch film

  • I wonder what happened to him... o_o

  • The only thing i can say for sure is he went completely batshit.

  • I found the concept behind the movie to be interesting, but the film itself was a bit too erratic for me to follow so I had to watch it twenty or so minutes at a time.

A great flick, but not for the casual observer.

  • i wonder why the hell someone conceived your comment as poor and put a negative vote. You were just honest and in fact you praised that movie in another way.

  • david lynch is not form this realm,he's too far away in his mind.if I had enough time to go trough his work... people see his 'wacky cigarette ad' on youtube.awsome work

  • YES! Great ending!

One of the best soundtracks ever as well.

  • god!

    the best movie ever!!!

  • GREAT FINALLE

  • AWESOME !!!

  • David Bowie too. what a combo.

  • Dick Laurente is dead.

  • dont think so

  • man the screaming before that David Bowie track comes on that is intense shit

best ending in a David Lynch film ever!

*next to the one in Twin peaks:fire walk with me of course*

  • Best part of the film, the theme song.

  • Never seen this film but I love Driver down - the music for it by the mighty NIN.

Better go check this flick out. Whats with him swelling up in the car?!?! I know Lynch is "out there" but jesus lol.

  • Mobius Strip for the motherf-ing win!!!

I love this movie; however, Lynch's masterpiece is without a doubt Mulholland Dr.

  • Agreed, Mulholland Drive is definitely the best. However, this is one fantastic ending scene.

  • No Twin Peaks series and film(s) better.

  • i love the series but i really don't like the movie.

  • Reznor its a genius

  • It's called Driver Down.

  • Begins as it ends...

  • Haunting end...

  • Nin and David Bowie ! lol

  • I really don t could you please tell me the name of the song if you know it ....thanks a lot

  • No, it's in the DESCRIPTION, which is just to the right from the video screen. You have to click "more" to view the full description. The name of the song is right there! You never used Youtube before?

  • Fucking Hell! Two words; YOU CUNT!! Just tell him the name of the song for fucks' sake. Is it so hard to do? You just say: It's Driver Down - Nine Inch Nails followed by David Bowie - "I'm Deranged" from the album Outside.

Gee! It takes less work to type that information out as it does for you to be a contrary, bitch fucker. Do you make life that hard for everyone just to please your small ego? Or can't you help yourself? Grow up and be helpful! Twice he asked but still you play DICK-HEAD!

  • Look, these kids gotta learn to read, otherwise they won't make it outside.

  • That did make me laugh!

  • Ok, cool.

  • Wow! You've met two difficult idiots! I'm sorry you had that experience on Youtube; trust me most people are normally very helpful, but you occasionally meet difficult donkeys. In answer to your question; the first song is Driver Down - Nine Inch Nails followed by David Bowie - "I'm Deranged" from the album Outside. If you want mp3s, then feel free to message me privately (click my name above). Take care, D x
