The mouse look like a hybrid with functions for both office use and gaming use. Although with the protrusion of the Thumb button position I'd rather buy this mouse for an office user who plays occasion games as I can see one can get pretty frustrated with the thumb button while in high tension FPS position.

Most people use preset buttons on their mouse for games and they also prefer diffrent DPI settings so this game switch probably switches between a normal and customised game modes. Sorry just a guess:)

It's not the resolution that's making your mouse smooth, it's the polling rate. 400 dpi on your Death Adder will be smoother than 800 dpi on my old MX310.

It means "dots per inch", it's how many points within a square inch that the mouse can read on the screen... if the mouse can split a square inch into more dots (higher dpi) it has more precise control.

I wouldn't say a higher DPI doesn't really mean faster movement, just more precise as you have more points that you can click on. Usually on the default settings high DPI mouses seem to feel like they're on high sensitivity for me, so it might be a case of playing around with the settings to get it to feel right for you.

Usually a mouse going crazy and doing odd spins like that is due to a laser/optical mouse being on a bad surface, are you using a decent mouse mat?

No, you press the windows key + tab in Vista. In XP you press alt + tab, and it looks really ugly, but works. you can still do alt + tab in vista, but it looks basically the same as in XP
