If you think there's a problem with their sound & how they are playing then you didn't ever really 'get' Venom. I've still got the tatts, and to this day their logo is one of the greatest ever :)
I was at this gig, I am ashamed to say. I still have one of Abbadon's drum sticks and a couple of Mantas's 'Sharkfin' plectrums he chucked out. I started using Sharkfin myself after that, ah the embarrassment of youth, this sounds bloody awful now!!
@willabema 25 years ago I would have agreed but listening to it now it's just weak, out of time garbage. Because they cannot play in time, or in key together, it robs the music of any power it might have had. Still, I have a ton of vintage Venom vinyl in my loft so you can make me an offer!
@brightontwit No thanks. I think the crappy, off signature sound was intentional. Less about technicality, more about bashing out the instruments and being "extreme".
@willabema Thing is, I have several of their live recordings, from the first Hammersmith set up to stuff from (I think it's Possessed?) and they definitely improved. The first Hammersmith live LP is truly ghastly with nothing in tune or in time through the entire show. However, the next one (the one this video is from and which I attended) is a lot better in terms of time and in key playing. So, that implies they were attempting to improve, and it was unintentional, they simply couldn't play
@willabema Oh yeah, I used to absolutely love them 'cos I come from a punk background; Exploited, GBH, Discharge, ANWL etc. So it was great to me at the time. I bought everything they released up to Eine Kliene Nacthmusik, or whatever it was called. But I suppose we mellow as we get older and it just seemed like a total racket to me now! haha
@brightontwit I love Venom and all, but I agree with you at some degree. Sometimes they seemed like they were trying too hard to be heavy, and it just turned out to be shit. For instance their 'Black Metal' song.. sounds horrible here. They probably didn't practice much, but man I love their songs. Their album Black Metal is deffinetly one of my favorites.. every song there is unique and hopefully my band and I get to cover some of their songs.. like a demo thing as a tribute! Bloodlust for sure
@Doomed928 Bloodlust was an insane bloodbath of mental mayhem! It's funny actually, cos I was REALLY into them and all my friends laughed and said they'd never last because they were total shit, and here people are talking about them over 20 years later and a whole new generation of people into Venom.
Would you listen to u people. Do u people actually know anything about music. Or u just a bunch of critics like to see u do better. Abbadon is a fucken good drummer. They r the first black metal band and the best black metal band. Better than c.o.f or dark throne. Its real metal if u dont like it dont watch it if u dont have anything good to say about venom look at porn keep your hand on your dick and dont type. Hail venom, slayer, megadeth, anthrax. If it were'nt for them there would be no metal
@TSpikeProductions It's sad but true...Abbadon is even worse than Lars Ulrich. Imagine Venom or Metallica with a skilled drummer like Mike Portnoy or Dave Lombardo. There would have been some stellar metal albums.
@metalslut1 While both drummers were not very good, I wouldn't want to see very drum-driven Metallica or Venom songs, it would just ruin the original feel.
`kin ell this brings back some memories,i was at this gig 3rd row in front of the right hand stack...fuckin awesome gig...im even on the video (briefly). Thanks for posting this, you`ve made an old man erm feel even older lol (but still a long haired metalhead ).
@MetalHeadFilipeG96 He's a great bassist these days, yeah he was rough at the start of his career, but he has developed over time, his vocals are even better now than they were back then, they seems to have more of an older, rougher edge these days, gives the Venom sound even more fucking balls than it already had!
yea, but i think hes lost some of the energy he used to have back in the day, still ive never seen em live so i cant prove this fact, only with the live videos i see, which, of these days are all pretty badly recorded since there are very few pro shots of recent concerts of Venom

Somewhat depressing to see. Venom smiling to the crowd?
Venom should be grinning with good pokerfaces like a year before this.
Seems like anyone can turn into a goddamn rockstar-wannabee in the end.
So sad it was.
