I have listened to a nightingale singing his little heart out from a thicket in the middle of a woodland near Gloucester at about two am on a brilliant fully moonlit night in mid May - so clear and surprisingly loud and incredibly melodious - no other sounds to be heard, no other birds singing at that time of night - except for this male nightingale. It was magical! No wonder British poets and musicians have dedicated their works to this absolute ace of avian songsters...the nightingale.
