Time is like a river, we can time travel into the future easily, but backwards would be very difficult. One theory to travel in the past would be to travel into parallel dimensions which exist according to string theory. If we were to travel in the past and change something, it would have no affect in the future because the future would exist due to the fact that the change happened. However it would only be considered change because it's different than the events in our dimension.
