  • Your “stick trick” is half the speed of Rich’s. And, Rich did not use one hand double strokes in any from. Lame....... :/

  • very good human

  • LOL!!! This explains alot. I thought that in the case of Buddy Rich, when he does this, that he was holding his left hand static and striking the left stick [through] with the right stick. I actually tried doing it that way and, of course, it doesn't produce the same effect or sound. This is a good explanation. Thanks for uploading.

  • hello and thanks from Brazil, good Friend!

  • Thanks! 5*

  • thanks m8!

  • tanks mr Mary Poppins :)

  • great video thanks

  • haha! your a dumbass lol. is that politically correct enough? haha noob.

  • Thank You, Derrick :)

  • 2:13.........priceless.

  • cool dude, thanks

  • what about double stroke technique?

  • very interesting dude ,in fact I like your techique

you wiggle those sticks very convincingly.

    you get an A.

  • I realize this is an old video and I might not get a reply but I was curious just HOW you were able to keep the right stick straight? Everytime I try this exactly like you've you do in this video the stick is at an angle pointed in and down as if I were playing drums only, of course, moving the stick upwards instead of down but still at that angle and I keep ending up hitting the side of my right hand by my pinky finger each and everytime.

  • shit, LEFT stick straight. Sorry for the confusion. My mistake.

  • alot of that stuff is just practicing it more..i have had alot of problems like that, i dont knowif you knwo of the flying fingers technique, but its just a matter of being albe to keep it from moving around. it just takes time and practice! keep at it bro!

  • I think I know what you're referring to. That playing a fill while twirling the sticks through your index/ring fingers that Thomas Lang and Viril Donati are infamous for. However I haven't a clue HOW that ones accomplished. Do you know if there's a video for that anywhere? Just curious.

  • im not sure but the technique i refering to is actually one used by metal drummers...for high speed rolls and blast beats ect. but im not sure if there are man sorry

  • great instruction.

my favorite part? around 2:44 +/- Phil Collins looks like he has whiskers!

  • nice!

  • a def fave!

    good job man!

I am sure that you do !

  • lol, 1Drummer88, you have a video that says me playing with no experience...dude...just shut up. If you don`t have skills that can back up your claims, then don`t say anything.

  • trais bonne leçon de baguette ; de finesse de frape! bonne explication ! et bonne batteur merci . je suis musicien latino français . gipsy andalou plus exactement

  • Nice job!!! you demonstrate and teach very very well.

    Thanks

    Gantt

  • Neil "Dirt" is sitting on the 5th row of mos influent drummers ever. Though I enjoy many of his early recordings, but he semms to be too overrated(if this word is spelled like this).

Rich is unique. Just as Tony , Elvin, Blakey, Roach, Morello, Krupa, and so on...

  • K K cold r you??

  • NeilPeartFTW - What tripe! Peart is not fit to lace THE MASTERS Boots - PERIOD. And please tell me how Peart is going to do ANY stick-on-stck trick with ONE STICK.....

  • thank you, someone who doesn't jerk off to neil peart and actually knows something about drumming. Buddy rich is the best drummer.

  • FTW means for the win

  • DUD U Explain It So WELL! :D THnx 4 the TIp!

  • hmmm..Buddy rich is cool but I bet Neil Peart could do this trick with one hand.

  • haha 4:14-4:17 hhaha

    thanks for this post!

  • I can Do Better!!

  • Cool! Thanks! Post more!

btw Those sticks look too big to be Gadds.

  • you remind me of a drummer buddy of mine from New York. Good job on teachin man!

  • um just wanted to say that i watched buddy rick preform this drum stick trick and he does RRLRRL

  • Hey mate many thanks for the Vid. Great!

  • I can only do it matched T.T it's kind of weird.

  • you're funny :)) , cool stuff anyway :)

  • Almost looks like Ted Bundy on his shirt, but I digress: Derrick, i am not a drummer but the way you teach and your knowledge is right on time. Happy skins to you always.

  • Is that Phil on the shirt? one of my personal fav drummers 1970-1980.... and also the fill on "in the air tonight" or whatever that songs called. LOL. Just kidding. Thanks DP for the stick trick tips!

  • fascinating... Can you show me how to put a hat on also?

  • Derrick,thanks for sharing. RH

  • lol ur funny :)

  • Love the Phil Collins shirt

  • I do this with match grip. Great workout for fingers.

  • I managed to do it traditional, but I can't figure out how to do it match grip wise (which is how I actually play), I can't get my arms in the right position to make the sticks go against each other the right way... Could you post anything about it, or something? Thanks

  • What you do is start by holding your sticks matched grip and face your palms towards each other (like a boxer's stance). Now position your sticks so they make an "X". Hold the fulcrum with your index and thumb, with that holding the stick, you move the stick by slapping your fingers against the stick which causes it to hit the opposite stick.

  • this totally helped thnx

  • Loved this thanks dude... I love the low-budget "all angles" view too :D cheers folks!

  • i love ur facial expressions :D

btw thank u so much for some really fine videos

  • your shirt is staring at me!! I enjoyed learning this... THANKSS!!!!!

  • Great video Derrick!

  • Cool man.

  • dude this has nothing to do with your video...but where did you get that phil collins shirt...it's one of the most badass shirts i've ever seen and i've been trying to find one like it haha...please tell me...pz

  • If you wanna learn buddy rich things

learn it from buddy rich see all his videos

    watch listen and learn

Thanks Derrick for all your videos

that means you care we can all learn from each other

    Good regards to everyone

    Sindri

  • For all you negative people talking bad about Derrick shame on you he helps more than you

he may not be always right just like the rest of us but he has done many good things just like the rest of us

    Be positive

Positive people get were they are going

  • That means more speed if you think it in inches every stick is about 16 inches from the tip of the stick right stick hits the left stick 3 inches from the tip and the left stick hits the right stick 8 inches from the tip the right stick travels down and left towards you

  • Hello all info is good but he is doing it a bit wrong the left hand is not right.

To get it right you can slow motion any video with buddy rich doing this trick.

The trick to get the speed with this

is to slide with the left hand towards the thumb.

Right hand on the shoulder on the left stick the left hand hits almost the balance point of the right stick.

by doing this both sticks travel one third of the distance

  • Hey, this was good stuff. I myself am not a drummer, my best friend is. I can get behind his kit and keep a beat, but I'm not that good. I've been wanting to learn this for a while.

    Thanks.

  • what's with these people on here talking shit? are you really that jealous of this guy that you have to insult a complete stranger? lol how about growing up and accomplishing something for yourself instead shitting all over others.

  • Not a bad lesson :)

By the way, are you using Steve Gadd signature Vic Firth sticks? Cause my Steve Gadd 1's look a lot like the one's you're using.

    -Ben

  • Cool vid Cool Lesson ...thanks !

  • oh no man!! are you gaining some fat? NOOO!! :*(

  • You are very good and gentle teacher

  • Funny how people think hes tryting to show off when all he is doing is passing down what Rich pioneered. *Sigh* no appreciation.

  • lol dude u r a legend love how u said it and ur over egsagerasions

  • Don't hate on this guy. He's just telling how to do the trick. I like this video.
