A more realistic estimate is closer to 15 trillion - however the cost of all of the toxic derivatives, credit default swaps, etc is not part of the national debt. Whoever told you that is misleading you.
If you search $23.7 TRILLION and the word Bloomberg, you will get a Bloomberg report about $23.7 TRILLION being lent out in 9 months by the FED. World debt is speculated to be at about $1.5 QUADRILLION which is 3 times the value of every asset in the world.
Now as for default swaps not being a part of the debt, that is WRONG!!! The money lent out backed by these derivatives IS backed by taxpayers money, thus national debt, even if it's not counted as "official" national debt.
Further, when the holders of that toxic debt default, they take those swaps to the FED and get 100% of the face value, not actual, FACE VALUE.
So the money lent on the swaps is backed by the US taxpayer, AND the debt, upon default of the loan, is ALSO backed by the US taxpayer. Did I mention that ALL the interest on BOTH the money lent out and the money paid at default is ALSO on the backs of the US taxpayer?
And, the "official" obligatory US debt is now at $120-150 Trillion.
First off, that "23 trillion" was an estimate. At the time of that writing less than $2 trillon was loaned out (says so right in the article.) $23 trillion dollars was not loaned out by the Fed.
Second I don't know where you're getting this idea that the Federal reserve is just going to reimburse people who hold toxic debt. They bailed out the large banks and insurance companies (you know, Bush's idea and everything.) However I can find nothing that says the fed is doing what you say it is.
They route the most toxic assets to the biggest banks who are already guarnteed the bailout money, and the US Treasury or FED pay 100 cents on the dollar for those toxic assets.
Then, every dollar paid is more debt backed by the US taxpayer, or did you not know that?
And remember, the bail-out is a secret group of people, doing things behind closed doors, with NO OVERSIGHT, and NO DECISION by that secret group can be reviewed by ANY group, agency, or court! Totally ILLEGAL!
Who is this "They" that you're talking about? Last time I checked the Big banks were scrambling to unload this toxic debt. So the big banks sell it to "them," then "they" somehow get the Fed to what, buy it back?
What they should do is force the holders of these crappy derivatives to separate the viable from the toxic debt. But I never hear that from you people, sounds too much like a solution. It's always just blame blame blame then Vote for Ron Paul, like that's ever going to do anything.
There are a number of banks that are "pre-approved" to unload debt, and they do it at face value. These debts are bought up by these pre-approved banks, a bail-out to their buds, and handed over to either the FED, who buys some, or the Treasury who buys the rest.

Actually, the $2 trillion figure I'm referring to is from that article that you told me to look up. Go to the fourth paragraph down. Barofsky's number was an estimate of what it might cost, while the actual dollars spent (at that time) was closer to $2 trillion.

See, that still doesn't make sense. $120 trillion is enough to give every person in the country $400,000 - which is obviously not happening. Furthermore, not everyone in the country works, and even less of those get pensions. Still seems like a highly overestimated number to me.
Which banks, exactly? Is there a webpage somewhere? You can't put urls here, just tell me what to google for. I am open to learning about this, becasue so far I'm really confused.

Your right, they are NOT giving everyone of us $400,000. The US federal government is giving their banksters cohorts $400,000 for every one of us, and then asking those scumbags to loan it back to us, at interest.
We pay the interest on the money that is created then GIVEN to the bankster scum, in the form of liquid injections, and we pay interest on that. Then they loan it to us individually, charge us interest on tha. Then use those loans as collateral for their own loans.

Pardon me, but he did not quadruple the debt at all. The debt when Bush left was $10 trillion dollars (Up from $5 trillion when he came on I might add,) As of today, the debt is roughly $12 trillion. Simple math shows that it has not "quadrupled."
Now, why is this debt so high? Because unlike Bush, Obama has factored the cost of the wars into the yearly budget, which means we PAY for it, instead of BORROWING FROM CHINA. That is what you're supposed to do when you fight a fucking war, you moron

First off,the debt is not at 14 trillion, it's at 12 trillion. Just do a google and you'll see. There's a site called "National debt clock," go check there.
Second, most of the 2$ that it's gone up is from the $700 billion bank bail out that came from (wait for it...) the Bush administration. Once again, the Republicans showing fiscal responsibility.
Third, even if it were 14$ trillion, which it isn't, that still isn't "quadruple" what it was. Last time I checked "quadruple" means FOUR TIMES.

A more realistic estimate is closer to 15 trillion - however the cost of all of the toxic derivatives, credit default swaps, etc is not part of the national debt. Whoever told you that is misleading you.

If you search $23.7 TRILLION and the word Bloomberg, you will get a Bloomberg report about $23.7 TRILLION being lent out in 9 months by the FED. World debt is speculated to be at about $1.5 QUADRILLION which is 3 times the value of every asset in the world.
Now as for default swaps not being a part of the debt, that is WRONG!!! The money lent out backed by these derivatives IS backed by taxpayers money, thus national debt, even if it's not counted as "official" national debt.

Further, when the holders of that toxic debt default, they take those swaps to the FED and get 100% of the face value, not actual, FACE VALUE.
So the money lent on the swaps is backed by the US taxpayer, AND the debt, upon default of the loan, is ALSO backed by the US taxpayer. Did I mention that ALL the interest on BOTH the money lent out and the money paid at default is ALSO on the backs of the US taxpayer?
And, the "official" obligatory US debt is now at $120-150 Trillion.

First off, that "23 trillion" was an estimate. At the time of that writing less than $2 trillon was loaned out (says so right in the article.) $23 trillion dollars was not loaned out by the Fed.
Second I don't know where you're getting this idea that the Federal reserve is just going to reimburse people who hold toxic debt. They bailed out the large banks and insurance companies (you know, Bush's idea and everything.) However I can find nothing that says the fed is doing what you say it is.

Then, every dollar paid is more debt backed by the US taxpayer, or did you not know that?

There are a number of banks that are "pre-approved" to unload debt, and they do it at face value. These debts are bought up by these pre-approved banks, a bail-out to their buds, and handed over to either the FED, who buys some, or the Treasury who buys the rest.
What they should do is ARREST these scumbags and order a worldwide hold on ALL of the scums assets pending trial. Foriegn criminals, too. They do it to drug dealers, do it to these CRIMINALS! They are WORSE!
