If you have a walking list, and know the name of the resident, it is best to ask something of the sort: "Hi, sorry to bother you; is the the ____ residence?" This gets there attention and reassures them you aren't selling anything. Also, address yourself as a VOLUNTEER, not a canvasser; this is a more honorable position to state.
The doorhangers were created by a few people in the area and a local printshop makes them for 6 cents a piece. We bought 20,000 for about $1300.00. Everyone pitched in.
re: gloves...there are the types you can buy where the finger part comes off and folds back in place with Velcro that way you an keep your hand warm and write at the same time
I also think it would be nice to read up on the candidate you are canvassing for so you know about their standing on the issues better.
