Lol @ all the squat try hards. Just because an excerise works for you dont assume you know everyone elses body. Thats the beauty of versatility with workouts, there are so many different ones, your bound to find one that works for you.
squats are effective depending on ur morphology if ur longed limbed u cant rack on the massive amounts of weight heavy enough to stimulate enough growth, im long limbed and when i do squats in order for my thighs to be parallel to the ground i have to be leaning over soo much i feel most of the workout in my lower back than legs and my knees are before the point of my toes, squats work differently for everyone, hack squats isolate the quads better, squats are great excersise dont get me wrong :)
@smashandre I agree with you on that. I love free squats, but being long limbed also my concern is lower back before legs fail. I used to hate hack squat, but I had to train at a different gym for a while that had one and now I love it. It is harder because it does what I want it to do, hit the quads. Also I have very good cardio and muscle endurance, so this means I can rep forever even with heavier weights. I agree though that it is a personal thing, each must find his own balance.
I'm been doing his work outs for 3 months, shit I seen alot of gains in my muscle , fucking Yates your a badass trainer and pro bodybuilder.... Thnk's
dorian realy great body builder ,great trainer ,hones and realy such a good person any way thnx dorian for your tips you help me to improve my body thnx alot man
there seems to be a lot of confusion about the deadlifts. for hamstrings it is the romanian deadlift. the legs should be bent slightly with the hips pointing out to the backside and as dorian says, keep the back arched. a stiff leg deadlift is something completely different and is more for your back not your legs! of course the legs will be involved but like i say its a big difference.
seated calf raise works your soleus which is predominantly made up of slow twitch fibres. You should do more than 6-8 reps. Aim 15-20 to really make this muscle grow. Real men Squat aswell. Otherwise good workout.
@yamakunda it means letting yourself rest too much between sets so feel ready for each, rather than following the strict minute break rules which is harder and produces more muscle growth
For all of those dogmatic free weight squat people that keep asking why they are not in these videos. Dorian did the hack squat over the free weight because you can't really train your quads to absolute failure with them. There is just to much glute/hamstring involvement and your respiratory sytem is bound to fail before your quads do anyways.
First of all. Credits to dorian. Hes a huge inspiration.
But..
your respiratory system is not bound to fail before your quads. Maybe for you if your conditioning sux.
Standard squat (feet shoulder with apart) mainly hits the quads. Ofc there are alot of muscle groups that works as well such as: hamstrings, adductors, glutes and erectors. That doesnt mean that you cant train your quads to failure.
Dorian used the hack squat because it worked for him. Case closed.
@KKdlReyes Very True. He also says they never suited his body type, long Legs and narrow hips. I can attest to the long legs thing, I struggle to get good depth because of it.
@KKdlReyes truth, also if your a shorter guy say 5'9-5'10 and under u dont really wanna do free weight squat ever cuz it works your core too much and can make you look too blocky on stage. Leg press is ur friend
@KKdlReyes the difference is in your goals. for a bodybuilder yes this is true, as you need to isolate each muscle and define them as much as possible, but for a powerlifter the stabilizer muscles won't get enough attention if you're only doing the hack squat obviously.
The stiff-legged deadlift is present in the back workout video. I did them on back day and it killed my hamstrings, kinda messing with my workout schedule. I'm wondering why he does the same workout on different days.
@johnson512n28 no they did regular deadlifts on back day. Except the way Dorian does them, he doesn't go all the way down to the floor in order to keep the tension on the lower back, because the bottom part of the movement is mostly glutes and quads. So even though Dorian-style deadlifts look similar to stiff-legged deadlifts, they are two different exercises stressing different muscle groups. SLDL are for hamstrings, deadlifts are for back
I have been doing this blood and guts trainer for a week now.. I rate it highly and don't doubt Yates' knowledge, however I usually experience a large amount of DOMS after legs, but no DOMS after this workout despite pushing myself to the limit and going to failure. Is this an indication that I will not recieve growth from this workout?
@MuRf456 I only seemed to get really sore when I first started training, which i kinda miss in a weird way?
From what i've learned and read,so long as your going to failure, your weights/reps are going up and you eat right, then you've got to be making gains.
I've made a PDF that follow the vids vids. You can print them out and track your progress. It also saves thinking what body part is next, and what weights to start with.

Training legs to failure, is hard. I think I do train them to failure, everytime I train them I have to take sugar to control the nausea I get from it. My sugar levels come down, my oxygen levels are low.
My specialty is film producing/making and this production value of this "video" is extremely proficient. The camera angles, editing and post-production tweaks are very, very appropriate and professional. Excellent work whoever produced this. Plus Dorian is in it ;)
@cristianlanda im not a big fan of squats because i dont have a good form, there are other good exercises. i do leg press. did u try leg press. i actually find that to work better. when i do squats, my knee makes a crack noise sometimes
@luigibattista10 I'd do leg extensions, first, just to get your legs warm. then go on to hack squats, for 3 sets, increasing weight-1 warm up, 2 working. then go on to back squats, 4 sets- 1 warm up, 2 working, 1 burnout. Then leg press, 3 sets. 3 working. Dont forget hamstrings, calfs, and a glut exercise.
@express375 I remember that too and I think it was injury related because thats the exercise that puts the bodybuilder out the longest if an injury occurs. I know, for example, Jay Cutler does them in a smith machine and on occasion light front squats. It's all about working the muscle effectively, plus squats are the hardest to get focused leg contractions in since it's a full body effort.
@express375 Nvm I found an excerpt from his training philosophy on another site. "1 Be objective in analyzing which exercises are best for you. Some conventional movements might not be suited for your physique. In my case, it was squats. After many years of being faithful to them, I realized that the relative lengths of my bodyparts restricted the range of motion for squats. When I switched to the leg press, I made much faster gains in quad size and sweep."
@cristianlanda no dorian wasnt a big fan of squatting. Think about it....how exactly can you go to complete failure on squats without risking serious injury? Leg presses and hack squats are much safer to take to total failure and if u do them correctly there is no need for squats
@cristianlanda i do them every other leg training , it gets stress out of the lower back . When it comes to legs , leg press (neutral position) are about the same
@cristianlanda dorian didn t like squats,he said that depends on your structure ,for him they developed more hamstrings and glutes but not the quads so he started doing hack squats that worked way better for him
@cristianlanda dorian claims that he never did any freeweight squat during his olympia career which is impressive if you consider the size of his legs back then
