  • That melange they just ate must have been some excellent shit...

  • Two things would make this scene magic #1 after Leto explains that spitting on the floor is a token of respect everyone in the room looks at each other and follows suit by hocking a loogie on each others shoes #2 when he declares that water be a bond between them he opens up his fly and begins urinating on the floor to the applause of the room.

  • I want to somehow start a project to make the ultimate version of this film. This scene needs to be in it and the end should be restored to the novel's with the plot of Thufir Hawat being completed and the memorable last lines by Lady Jessica.

  • @kingbilgames That has been done as a fan edit. Google "David Lynch's Dune: The Third Stage Edition".

  • Dr. Kines is looking a little drowsy there xD 0:21

  • @Th3ba1r0n I think he just getting into the groove, high on spice...

  • Thufir obviously not musically inclined...

  • lovely clip, pitty for the subtitles getting on the way

  • Kyle MacLauclan may have played Paul Atriedes in the film, but Patrick Stewart is the Muad'dib of acting.

  • the baliset is a chapman's stick after all...

  • What's name of this song?

  • @czyzykkkkkkkkkkkkkkk It's "Back Yard", from the album "Parallel Galaxy" by Emmett Chapman.

  • It's too bad the extended edition is so mangled. It's no wonder Lynch didn't attach his name to it. I have heard that Lynch wanted to do a 6 hour cut that would have been a TV mini-series. I love this movie so much either way.

  • Does anyone know where the clip of Gurney saying something like;

"Like an ass, I go out into the desert to do my duty"?

  • @Der0Nibelung Like a Wild ass in the desert, off I go to my work." He's quoting Job 24:5

  • The water spilling guy was also from Air Force One and Das Boot.

  • Thumbs up if Patrick Stewart is total badass in this scene

  • 2 people have parents that sucked in 1984 and left an ever-expanding "Jerk" in the Space-Time-Continuum.

  • Patrick Stewart as gurney, at least they got one thing right in this film. lol

  • @rbdzntsfrlk One thing right? Says you

  • Thank you for uploading this

  • Best part of this scene is with the funky guitar.

  • @davidjamessheets Actually the instrument is both a guitar and bass in one, the Chapman Stick ... /watch?v=PvuiAobq2_Y

  • David Lynch shouldn't be ashamed of this movie it was good very good those damn critics will be the end of all art one day.

  • @AudioAndroid= Movie critics are almost worthless. The movies they like are for the most part lousy and awful.

  • If I remember the book correctly Leto thought of Gurney Halleck as having "the mind of a poet and the heart of a killer."

  • Personally, I got the impression Kynes was about to jump the Duke for wasting all that water. The doc himself barely spits; Leeto empties a full glass.

Hm... that glass, or whatever is, actually reminds me of a bong. They could've used that water with a bong. That's all they needed to complete the chillin'.

  • For some reason, when The Duke drained all that water from the glass, it made me very thirsty lol

  • @XvxBERSERKxvX You should read that scene in the book. He does it at dinner with notable figures of the city of Arrakeen. Only Lady Jessica and Dr. Kynes approve of the gesture.

  • this isn't available in any soundtrack. is it?

  • I like this baliset better than the mini-series one, which is basically a slightly-modified lute. I understand that a lute fits a troubadour better than the movie's contraption, but still.

  • what total bullshit :)

  • Seems that 80's progressive rock was pretty hip on Caladan.

  • First off, to have a scene with the calibre of 6 great actors is rare, atuned to amazement.

Second, the usage of the C-Stick is inventive as it full capabilities have not be utilized yet in our culture, so in that sense it makes total sense in the Dune universe.

Third, at least the movie tried with the baroque element to connect the future with the past...just my $0.06...

  • @doublemandala I agree with your third point most of all. I've been reading the book and I noticed something.

Dune is a fantasy story told in a science fiction setting. This is why some people find it so daunting, its not what we're first expecting.

  • The song reminds me the "Sultans of Swing" from dire straits.

  • @fremenchip The baliset should sound 80's. That's Steve Lukather from TOTO providing the music.

  • \m/

  • Thanks for posting this. I love Dune - my most watched film. However, I am pleased that this ended on the cutting room floor. It just wouldn't sit well in the film - too awkward.

  • i wish they could mix the 2000 dune and the 1984 dune, like i love the yueh from 1984 but i hate the thufir hawat, he looks like a gorilla in lyncys version but idk

patrick stewart and sting make a nice combo as well lol

  • the only thing missing in this scene is the bong they should have been passing around as Gurney's baliset gently weeps

  • This scene must be from the original 4 hour version, because I don't remember it on the 2 hour edited version. But it's a great upload, thanks for sharing!

  • I won't belive this is portable instrument. I also understand that Arrakis is a hot place but putting a fan as an integral part of an instrument is beyond even my most abstract imaginations.

  • Does anyone know where I can find the clip with Patrick Stewart running into battle with the pug?

  • I've always wondered what Gurney's "baliset" looked like.

  • @rozniy It is called a Chapman Stick. It is a real instrument. Look it up.

  • A great scene from Lynch's best.

  • i recently watched it...in the "evil" way...

and was lucky enough to get the version with this scene included:D

  • missing the inkvine scar on his cheek..

  • Gurney knows how to raise the roof! If he'd played for much longer, Thufir's restraint would have vanished and he'd be playing air baliset alongside him, while the duke would brake open the Spice beer.

It also appears Dr. Kynes has forgot to put his contact lenses in that morning.

    Great clip!

  • Patrick Stuart was a bad choice as Gurney. He's not gigantic enough

  • @BabyWetsAllNight you are stupid as hell it is in fact one of the greatest casting decisions in history

  • Patrick Stuart is playing the Chapman Stick.. nice!!

  • a good scene but the baliset sounds way to 80's

  • Layers of subtlety. The Duke knows by then how precious water is to the fremen (he just acknowledged it, folks). He's very deliberately (instinctively seizing the moment) pouring all his water, showing Kynes that just as he understands his gesture, he has one of his own to make. He's telling Kynes, you've gone native and spit on the ground, I'm Duke Atreides, look at all the water I bring, and I'm giving up everything I have... even Paul is in on the very serious joke, until he sees the moon...

  • from his dream

  • Thufur is one bad ass warrior mentat.

He is the Atriedes sword master, and was ready to kill Liet Kynes at the sight of him spiting on the ground in the presence of his Duke.

I had never seen this scene before

  • Duncan Idaho was the House Atreides Swordmaster, not Thufir - Thufir was only the House Mentat.

Both characters were pretty badass though.

  • why was he playing a fan heater...?

  • its Patrick Stuart. Does it really need an answer? ^^

  • I don't remember this scene being in the movie at all. Which cut is this from?

  • This is from the 3-hour-long "Alan Smithee" TV cut. Pity the sequence didn't make it into the theatrical version.

  • Can one buy this version?

  • Yes, it's on the Dune Extended Edition 2-Discs DVD (Region 1).

  • Patrick Stewart playing a Chapman Stick... never thought I'd see that.

  • they were all getting blazed right here

  • LMAO!!!!!!!

  • The Duke pours out all his water from his liter bottle as a symbol of his commitment to the Freeman. And prophetic that he pours out all of his own water of life when he is betrayed. The original movie is a classic, but the book is even better.

  • Oh yes. Wasting a whole liter of water. Such a great gesture.

Spitting was sufficient. Pouring a liter of water on the floor was demeaning.

  • What? Are you a Fremen?

  • It's quite obvious if you've read the original novels about 7 times.

  • Kull Wahad! You are a Fremen.

  • WTF IS THAT PATRICK STEWART???

  • His very self!

  • LONG LIVE DUKE LETO!!!

  • but the baliset it supossed to be like a guitar or harp thing

  • Baliset, is that a real instrument?

  • It's actually a Chapman Stick with an added lower part.

  • Sweet.

  • Do you know anything more about this song? Like, does it have a name, who wrote it, etc.? Was it written by Poco? Thanks.

  • It's "Backyard" by Emmett Chapman.

  • Hey thanks for replying. Do you know where I can buy/download it? Cant seem to find it anywhere!

  • I'm afraid it's a bit hard to find, I don't have it either. Good luck!

  • Great scene. I've never seen it before. I need to get the one that has all the scenes in it. I love this film too, and I want to see every frame!

  • this movie have somethings of special!

  • damn did patrick stewart ever have hair?

  • you see this instrument when paul asks gurney about it, its for the crossing he says

  • Alot of people frown on the Lynch movie. I don't see why. I saw this movie as a kid, loved it, read the book many years later, saw the movie again, then saw the miniseries, and was apalled by it. The movie is the best version, and I hope the 2009 remake gets it right: The good acting of the movie, with the special effects of the miniseries.

  • My thoughts exactly.

  • @PresidentRevan Yeah, but in both the miniseries and the movie, the actors are so white-bread it's unbearable. Sure they try to mask it, but they need more people of color in the future. And secondly, if you admire the Baron's acting in this movie, you are seriously effed up. The miniseries had much more awesome Baron.

  • @PresidentRevan Both versions had awful visual effects, honestly. The CGI in the miniseries was almost as bad as Lawnmower Man's.

  • Ahh the Balliset, Part Sitar, part turntable, sold to us in earnest by Patrick Stewart ;)

  • Or de VrieD, as appears to be correct?

  • And WHERE is the inkvine scar?

  • It's there, but it's hard to catch.

  • I don't want to cavil pedantically, but one thing that should NOT have been included is Brad Dourif (as Piter de Vries)'s dyslexic mispronunciation 'LandsDraad' for 'Landsraad'.Not likely in a Mentat, and mars a fine performance.

  • @ekerilaz you sound like a total asshole you must be seriously unpleasant to be around

  • This should have been included in the movie.

  • Absolutely!

  • -So I guess this is among the deleted scenes on one of the DVD releases? I'd be grateful if you could clarify this situation for me.

  • It's in the extended 3-hour "Alan Smithee" TV cut. The current US DVD includes it.

  • Huh.... I JUST read this part in the book....

  • This is the greatest movie ever! Thanks for posting this clip.

  • You're very welcome!

  • I love this clip! And I love how it shows how little Leto understands the Fremen view of water. Did you see how disgusted Kynes looks when Leto starts pouring the water on the ground? Kynes gives his body's own water, whereas Leto is simply wasting perfectly good water. Absolutely brilliant.

  • Apparently, Sting (who was in Dune also) taught Patrick Stewart how to play that instrument for the movie. Looks like he did a good job teaching him.
