After 40 years of hay hauling flat bed trucking, the Combination Ratchandle winch was designed by a trucker to make it easier for many flatbed haulers. Realizing a trucker can make more income by flatbed hauling, there are many labor intensive procedures truckers work with daily that eventually steers them away from flatbedding. One major way of eliminating this arduous process is making a better tie down winch that works faster, safer and more convenient. This is what it is all about!
I have been considering being a truck driver. I havent thought of driving a flat bed. Mainly either a dry van or Intermodal. And all truck drivers make good money even though flat bed pays more.
Kieth! your videos are great. Very informative and great questions. I have thought about getting into the trucking business and your videos are very helpful and insightful. I think you could make a great instructor. Mahalo and Aloha from Hawaii!
Being a Flatbedder is much more complex that simply being a Semi-driver. Flatbedder has to have an extensive knowlege of how to tie down (Anything). In other words, you have to secure your load, before you even think about moving the truck 1 foot down the road. Flatbedding is 100% more difficult than pulling a Van or even a Reefer. Refrigerator work is 99% "Time Element" driving. Especially if you are transporting "PRODUCE". Flatbedding has more to do with keeping the load on the trailer.
@silentmajor I would agree with you. I retired from my flatbed, January of this year, first thing I did before arguing with my wife about being home too much was to begin gaining more weight, due to no physical activity. Chaining, strapping, tarping, folding, rolling..........I miss that more than I do....arguing....... be safe and enjoy retirement.

Percentage? No. Unless you have an honest boss. I'm a company driver and I only work by the mile. I have worked percentage before and ended up losing money. And yes the better money is in flatbetting, and always will be.
Im a Flatbed hauler that went to heavy hauling alot of men asked me why did i want flatbed i said i like a Good challenge and yes i was in shape doing it but since i stop driving i m not I miss my flatbed and the roads and im a female hauler

What about sitting at a dock for 6 hours? What about when shippers start to unload you then take a break for 2 hours? What about when you don't have cash and the lumpers won't take comceck, or unload you due to various reasons. You sure about all that??? I run 2800 miles a week and GROSS the truck 2x what a freight box will give ya. I'm usually loaded and driving (including tarping) in under 3 hrs, and usually an hour at off load!
used to drive flatbed, there is a lot more headaches in flatbeds and yes it pays more, but you lose the extra money in time it takes to secure each load.the drop and in hook guy is making more miles while you are tarping

@juseph29 There are numerous other responsibilities associated with running a flatbed. Getting loaded and/or unloaded can take hours on end as well as the prep time, chaining, strapping, securing the load. Then getting it to where it has to go and waiting to get unloaded and putting all of your chains, binders and tarps back where they came from. All takes time.
@juseph29 If you want to be able to save time in flatbed trucking (and do it more safer) check out my video introducing the Cargo Tie Down Combination Ratchandle winch. If you are not trucking anymore, we would be pleased if you tell others about this. Thank You!
@juseph29 Wow, I see 3 people hit you so far with a thumbs up man, that tells me your case was not isolated. I thought the majority of you guys got in and out before we did.
@lifeasatrucker yes, flatbed freight is exposed to weather so a lot of it has to loaded, secured and tarped oposed to dry van that has a lot of drop and hook.please drivers,i am speaking of MOST ,not ALL cases
Thanks for the truth guys. I was thinking about it but i do not really feel like going to jail. What my chances of paying for a school, getting my cdl and getting a local delivery job right away?
@head4ever lol, man you made my night on that one! You are addicted to watching trucking videos you just might take up for us drivers when the opportunity arises
Whats good nice video .. i will like to know do you have to drive a tractor trailer to take the cdl class A ? if not can i use a 24 footer truck with air brakes ?

I will definatly go flat bed just because I want to stay in shape. I don't want to die of a hearth attack just when i''m ready to retire.

@inilledra i pulled flat steps & at the end RGN's
i was in sorry shape from holding the wheel 98% of the time
yes tarping & chaining will help some but it's still not enough
the human body was not designed to sit 10 hours a day
i still miss it but now i'm home every night & i get to sleep in a real bed
be safe out there

Yes if you are taking a Class A test you need a combination vehicle with air brakes at least on the truck.
