In 1951 I was on a ship with 4999 others arriving from Korea, we were singing Caiifornis here I come but as the ship got closer to the mainland we were almost in tears and as we passed under the Golden Gate Bridge someone started singing God Bless america and we all joined in. When we arrived at Ft. Mason people told us they could here us and when we docked the people on the dock were still crying. It's has such an endearing affect and stays with you forever. Will God still Bless America???????

I think the tempo on this recording of the song is just right....sometimes it is taken a bit too slow and sounds downbeat, almost like a dirge, but here, they catch the spirit exactly right! It is meant to be an "up" song, a celebration, an ode and praise for all we have been blessed by God with. It is impossible to explain to this generation what this song and this woman meant to the generation coming off of the great depression and going into most destructive war the world has ever known.
My dad served in the armed forces during WWII and when their ship arrived back in the states after dealing with Hitler's forces in Germany, Kate Smith was on the dock singing God Bless America and all the men broke down in tears. tears of joy to be home from the horrors of war.

When Kate sang at the Philidalphia Flyer games. It was alledged one team came in and the coach assigned some players to look at game film to see the Flyers weaknesses. Then he told others , You guys figure out how to break the Kate Smith curse. After thinking about it they ended up giving her flowers before the game and telling her how wonderful she was and how great she sang. It almost worked the Flyers won in overtime. They won an astounding 80% of their games when she sang. Go figure.
Listening to her sing this song brings back memories of the day my mother and father took me to the airport to leave for Vietnam. My Dad was a WWII vet and my Mom stood with him while he was in Europe and in Japan. They were both being very stoic as we drove .. until Kate Smith came on the radio and sang this song. It is a memory that has grown in importance as I've grown to understand what they must have been going through during that drive.

Anyone from the Indianapolis, Indiana area should remember Acapulco Joe’s. The original owner, Joe Rangel, was proud of his citizenship and grateful for the Americans who helped him start this business, he had it played over the loudspeakers at noon every day at the downtown location. It can still be played by request.

When Kate sang at the Philidalphia Flyer games. It was alledged one team came in and the coach assigned some players to look at game film to see the Flyers weaknesses. Then he told others , You guys figure out how to break the Kate Smith curse. After thinking about it they ended up giving her flowers before the game and telling her how wonderful she was and how great she sang. It almost worked the Flyers won in overtime. They won an astounding 80% of their games when she sang. Go figure.

Listening to her sing this song brings back memories of the day my mother and father took me to the airport to leave for Vietnam. My Dad was a WWII vet and my Mom stood with him while he was in Europe and in Japan. They were both being very stoic as we drove .. until Kate Smith came on the radio and sang this song. It is a memory that has grown in importance as I've grown to understand what they must have been going through during that drive.

No one sings it like kate Smith...My Grandmother was an immigrant, became an American Citizen..loved this country as I do..She lived long enough to see her Son serve in the Pacific during WWII and her Grandson serve in Vietnam..She would sing this over and over..SHE taught me to Love this country...Only in America..GOD BLESS AMERICA

Irving Berlin wrote this as a tribute to a country that gave great oppurtunity and a wonderful life. and no one can sing it better than Kate Smith. Come to America and not make it don't be here like everywhere else. I am glad to be British but glad to be an American Citizen and look forward to be living a life here and a sucessful one. All States should be English (only Hawaii should remain bi lingual). When in Rome do as the Romans do, but keep diversity alive that is America. God bless her.

The Philidelphia Flyers are at it again. Kate is singing at all their home games ( recording).Came back from 3 games to none in one series and now have tied the Stanley Cup Playoffs with 2 home wins. They are tearing up at home. Go get em Kate!

Her mother said she did not learn to talk until she was 4. She was saving up her voice for better things. When Susan Boyle came into her own in Europe they were 70 years behind our discovery. Kate Smith became America's voice.She was discovered in the 30's. She was so good she had a top 10 radio program. Many a celebrity made there way through her program including Abbott and Costello's debut.

In 1980 when our Olympic hockey team upset the Russians and won the gold medal the crowd/players spondaniously sang this immortalized song. When we were attacked (9-11) and baseball resumed this song was featured during the 7th inning stretch at all games. Our congressmen all joined together to sing it in a rare moment of unity that day. As NY recovered it was sang at the opening of all Broadway plays. In fact ;all over America this song was the central theme. God Bless America

Now that Kate is not with us, perhaps I should get the Philadelphia Flyers to get my dog Freckles to sing it.( she's an amazing singer) She beats me everytime we are on the opposite side of an issue. She's smarter then me and there's not a damn thing I can do about it. When I tell her she can't do this or that or eat this or that somehow, some way she ends up getting her own way! It is a mystery to me how easily she employs her canine will over me. Record so far Freckles -131 Me- 0 .

The song was actually written in 1917. It was tucked away for a very long time and put out at WW11 time. Irvin Berlin and Kate Smith came to an agreement that royalties would go to the Boy Scouts. The Boy Scouts have received millions from it since.

In 1982 Kate was honored by getting the Presidential Medal of Honor, certainly because of her rendition of this song and that she helped raised millions for WW11. Very few receive that award, but Kate richly deserved it. The sports event saying "It ain't begun until the fat lady starts singing' was a direct result of Kate Smith singing at the Flyers games. A variation of that is "It ain't over until the fat lady starts singing."

Britain discovered Susan Boyle last year. It took them 75 years(KATE 1934) to catch up to us. Now if Susan can get her own program and sing an original partiotic song and discover 2 mega acts she will have almost caught up with Kate. Kate weighed 230 and was 5'10" and was sensitive about her weight as to be expected.

Kate had a wildly successful radio program from 1937-45. Both Henny Youngman and Abbott and Costello got their start with Kate's radio program.That's a good trivia question. In 102 Philadelphia Flyer games they only lost 21 times when Kate sung in person. That is almost a 80% success rate. Even today the Yankees often play this song during the 7th inning.
Um, that reminds me they won the World Series last year and they played Phil. who won the World Series the year before.

The Philadelphia Flyers started playing this song before some of there games with a recorded version of Kate. They seemed to win just about every game when played. Kate surprisingly showed up at a game and they won it ,and then she showed up a few more times and they won every game! Finally she sang at the 6th game of the Stanley Cup to which Philiadelphia won the Stanley Cup. That was repeated the next year. In 1986 when she died at age79 the Flyers erected a statue of her at the stadium. RIP

@hajune I just got the DVD of that game the Flyers vs. the Red Army.Which Philladelphia won 4-1,and after the game (even though they didn't show it) the scoreboard at the Spectrum flashed up "KATE:34-10-3",so they did play (more likely a recording of) "God Bless America" before the game that day in '76.

Only a few singers still with us from Kate's era. The most prominant are Deanna Durbin, Patty Andrews, Lena Horne, Doris Day and Britain's Vera Lynn. We might include Shirley Temple and Rose Marie from the Dick Van Dyke Show. Rose Marie was an amazing child singer and had her own very popular program from 1929-34. She is the only living person who had a radio program in the 20's. Others are Delores Hope(Bob's favorite singer), Risa Stevens, Kitty Wells,Carol Channing and Margaret Whiting.

I think I will put her on the America's Got Canine Talent Show. Move over Susan Boyle. That reminds me Kate was the first Susan Boyle out there. She was an American institition. Had her own radio and tv program,sang for presidents, was the grand marshall for the Rose Bowl Parade, etc etc. A mega talent.
