So the best way to enjoy whiskey is to act like it's mouth wash, got it. "Oh aye, I'm drinking a Single Malt 12 year Listerine from Skye! A right gud fresh bit o' dram there!"
@Metayounis It's not for everyone. That said, I would recommend trying a decent single malt scotch before you decide you don't like it. There are two types of scotch, and most people make the mistake of trying only a blend on which to base their opinion. I dislike blends, but most well known scotch brands are blends (ie: Jonny walker, chivas regal, ect) but all good scotches are single malt
in my humble opinion, always room temp, a few DROPS of water to release the nose, and never ever ever ice. if your using ice it's because your drinking a poor grade of whiskey, or whisky depending on it's origin. add a nice stout, also room temp, and a fine cigar, and you have the holy trinity. i myself prefer the irish, but that is just my taste and my family tree perhaps. i was born and raised in the states by the way, but luckily i was taught at least a few proper things in life!
in scotland there is no "e" in whiskey (thats the irish spelling) irish whiskeys are over 800 years old the monks were the first to start it if anyone wanted to know.scottish whisky emm i personally dont like adding water it dilutes the muskyness of it scotch has an earthy taste because of the way it is made and maybe a drop of water for some peoples taste, with good irish whiskeys like middelton they are far smoother than scotch so i wouldent add water.both those whiskeys in the video are top 1s
im 14 is it alright for me to have some whiskey I pour the same amount as in the video and I drink it slowly... so I think it shouldn't be too bad for me every night or so
yea mate . . i like lager, gin, vodka, wine and even cider . i got black label whiskey but i took 1 sip and then cant take it anymore .. not my taste . .

Does expert village go out of their way to find people that don't have a clue? I mean I've seen expert village videos on soccer, science, flying airplanes, exercising, scotch and a bunch of others and I am yet to come across a video where you're actually given sound advice. Not one single video on any subject. It's ridiculous.
Is'nt it supposed be so, that whiskey/whisky is enjoyed?
And we do all know that everyone does have a different palate (''sense of taste'' for they who does not know), which DO make everyone perceive the taste differently!
So what may be good way of serving whisky for YOU, may not be a good way for others....
Well I say: ''Drink the bloody thing the way you like it!''
@FlyingEriksen actually mate, "whiskey" is the specific spelling for a different drink entirely from "scotch" and you'll find that many japanese and american made "whiskies" are different drinks from "whisky".
I'm unsure if the guy in the video has anything to do with what that moronic instution known as "expert village" name their videos but if he did then he should be ashamed of himself for not knowing the difference.
"Expert Village" has some of the worst videos I have ever seen, from photography, to whiskey, they fail it all. Its mainly because they get professionals instead of teachers, I'm sure he knows how to drink and serve a whiskey, but he just may not be able to explain it, and I'm 90% sure they filmed this in one take, so he was nervous as all hell.
As long as the water is room temp and distilled, it isn't going to kill the scotch character. Islay's will still taste like islay's, highlands like highlands, etc. It just turns the volume down.
Ice is murder, though. Once you drop the temp that much, Ardbeg tastes like Clan MacGreggor. You might as well just buy a decent blended if you need/want ice.
I always love how insulted people get if people enjoy to drink something 'wrong'. The whole point of a drink is to enjoy it how you want it, not how some alcohol dictator mandated it be drunk. I'm not saying that it's wise to take a fine scotch and drown it in a mixer of choice, but I certainly won't hold it against you because if it's what you enjoy, then that's what you should do.
But what realy strikes home is the truth that we SCOTS actually dont know much about quality whisky until we emigrate or are born with a silver spoon in our mouths. Bells, Walkers, Teachers, Glen Grant, all whiskys which are bought and sold as the "Scotch".
Buying a Malt in Scotland has to be learned. knowing what its made from too.
There are some fine Blends, Monkes Shoulder is one, Famous Grouse another.
Everybody has their own ways of drinkin whiskey and all the stuff. so neither way is wrong or right, just like someones opinion.. I just shoot whiskey.. I dont care bout the taste cus it aint gonna stay in my mouth long. bam down the hatch! get toasted open up and have fun.
@baddmaddogg so why waste that much money on it? if you aren't noticing the flavour, and are simply trying to get toasted, why not buy supermarket own-brand vodka? much cheaper, and the same result ensues...
@kokorochris u have a good point. last timr I tried a store brand it was severely harshand I almost puked it up.. lol and im more of a name brand kinda guy.
I can't take someone seriously as a whisky expert when they can't even spell whisky. It's Irish WHISKEY and American WHISKEY, but it's Scotch WHISKY. There ain't no E in Scotch Whisky.

I hate how you people are being sarcastic. C'mon, the man's an expert: First, you pour the whiskeeeey, then you drink it. Simple! (and certainly not certainly not).
Besides, he's right: pour in loads of water so you at least double the volume of the drink!
I'll drink (a Macallan) to that. Johnnie Walker's terrible. When you pay for a bottle or a glass of Johnnie, you're not paying for a good drink, you're paying for a well marketed brand.
wooow, that's a lot of water for such a small portion of whisky. And personally I prefer the Glencairn whisky glass for the nosing adn body etc. of the whisky.
By the way, if your talking about or reviewing a scotch, it's important that you spell it without the "e". Only the Irish and the Americans spell it that way
Why does the description say "Learn how to mix cocktails from this video"? It doesn't talk about cocktails at all. Also, offering ice for Ardbeg is an insult to your guests. Also, "pour as much as you like" is an invitation to alcoholism; he should say "pour about 1.25oz". Also, "just a touch" of water is 0.25tsp, not 3.0 tsp as he pours. Also, this video just cuts off in mid se
And just a basic fact. Expertvillage should know that when they refer to Scotch Whisky (not whiskey!), then the headline should be: "Types of whisky: Serving Scotch Whisky".
2. It's ok to offer water but don't make it 50% whisky 50% water! Just a few drops
3. Never ice in a single malt (and a decent whisky bar shouldn't offer ice)
4. He is way to fast when it comes to smell the whisky. It's important that you first of all "warms up" the whisky by placing a hand under the glass and the other hand on top of the glass so that you "embrace" the whisky. Do that for 2-3 minutes. Then it releases all the aromas, and then you get the full experience of it...
Room temperature in Scotland is 2.5 degrees to 15.7 degrees celsius, which is the ideal temperature to drink a scotch and the birth place of the NO ICE RULE. I live in a 40 degree celsius area so there is no problem adding a cube or two to drop the temperature of the drink down to it's perfect level. You must use bottled water though. That no ice rule applies in cold climates only because if the drink gets too cold then it numbs your tongue and prevents you from picking up the subtle flavours
@GuitarPeter22 It's all preference asshole. I'm sure there is some people who would love to drink there scotch like he demonstrates. There is no right or wrong way to drink whisky.
@RE4Freak Hi there. First of all thank you for the nice words about me. Gotta love the internet. Well, you're right, some people would love that, and of course I respect that. I just think that when the distillers put so many years in making single malt, we as customers need put at least some time and effort into enjoying the product. Ice cools down the tounge so you can't taste as much and a tumbler glass don't give you any aromas. I'm not here to insult, just to inform... Peace
@chvick Thanks for the question! A small wine glass is definitely better than a big tumbler glass. But try and use a nosing glass. Just google "nosing glass". The shape of the glass makes the whisky ideal for nosing and actually also tasting! And it's also possible to warm the whisky by placing your hand under the glass. I think you will be impressed with the difference this glass makes. I was indeed!
@unwhack Hi! It really does. Whisky can be rough at cask strength and you will often want to add a bit of water to it. But the Glenfiddich 12 yo is as we all know at 40% and in my opinion it doesn't need more water. When he adds that much water the strength will become between 20-30% - and actually that's what the professional nosers do when they need to make tasting notes, find whisky to a blend etc, because all the flavours and aromas are easier to separate at that strength.
@GuitarPeter22 thought so to, as long as I have been drinking scotch, but found myself sipping Dalmore out of a tumbler with a cube of ice once the heat hit 30-35 degrees haha )
pardon my french but expert village can suck my cock!! really .. why post something if you are gonna frustrate people by cutting it off in mid sentence and then making people fish around to find the continuation of the video .. go to hell .. figure it out people!!
He f***ing drowns the Malt with what he calls "a touch of water" - man, this wasn´t just a touch. A touch to me would be five or so drops. And: never ever ice in a single malt! This has nothing to do with personal taste - there is absolutely no chance of getting the flavours out of a good malt whisky if you cool it down. It needs to be at room temperature to fully enjoy it. Whatever: if you`d like to waste good money, add some ice. Slainte mhath!
@ts2101 : What kind of whiskys are you thinking of? Sadly enough that this is supposed for "some whiskys". But never (NEVER) with a single malt (even if some marketing freak of Macallan suggests so for the 8 year old...They would even sell their grandma for new and young customers). Whoever suggests taking ice with a good malt takes into account that it changes the molecular structure in a way that it covers the flavours rather than opening them up.
@ghlieme Yes, it's true what you say that about ice and the way it affects the molecular structure. But have you ever heard about the saying ''Less, is more.''?
Because everyone does have a different palate (''sense of taste''), which DO make everyone perceive the taste differently!
This is what makes a whisky, that may be perfect for one person.... may not be any good for another person!
For what concerns me, I do prefer single malts from Speyside. especially Glenfiddich 18 year (WO. ice!)
@ts2101 : Okay okay, I am convinced. And I already got the point before: drink whatver you like however you like it. But it doesn`t keep me from saying "NO" to ice in a single malt.
Call me a snob or whatever you like - I know what I like!
Slàinte mhath to all whisky lovers - ON or OFF the rocks!
I think what he was going to say (at the end) was certainly not with coke or 7-up ... just neat, with water or ice .... love laphroig (btw) ... but now, im a real burboun lover .. jefferson's reserve ... over ice .. enjoy!!!
Most of the whiskies across the world are spelt without the "e" (particularly Scotch Whisky). On the other hand, typically Irish and American whiskies are spelt with the extra "e".
LOL... yeah i almost ended up making my own word... but when it comes to the plural form there is no standard convention.... even if you check up the manufacturers' sites you will find variations... i have seen people use "whiskies" as the plural form of "whisky" and "whiskeys" as the plural form of "whiskey"
I am suspect of the knowledge claimed by the presenters of all these Scotch videos on youtube. There are two spellings of whiskey-whisky. Scotch Whisky is always spelled whisky. all other types of whiskey are spelled whiskey.
I have a bottle of imported V.O. Seagrams Whisky. It says it was aged 7 years, and I know that it doesnt age in the bottle. But it has all original seals, and labels, in perfect condition. Worth anything? I can send pics if anyone wants to see them
You both are idiots. Glenfiddich 12 years old is a great single malt and Glenfiddich 18 years old is judge to be the best 18 years old whisky in the world.
Ever had a 30, 40, or 50yo Glenfiddich? If so you'd probably change your mind. Glenfiddich 12 is not even close to being the best, but it's far from the worst.
I like Glenfiddich 12 yr old, i tried a minature of an 18 theo ther day and i just fucking lvoed it omg,was like sex in the me mouth lol, shame it`s £45 :-( but anybody who says Glenfiddich is nasty shouldn`t be drinking whisky.
@oxman0313 Not all whiskys peak when they're young. Some whisky aged in former sherry barrels can and will age well for many decades. I'm not saying all old whisky is good. I've had a 52yo Macallan that wasn't that great, but I've had 48, 50, and 52yo cask samples of Glenfiddich that were fantastic (50 was by far my favorite). One of my favorite scotches of all time is a Glenfarclas that was aged entirely in a former port barrel for 27 years (bottled for the Dundee Dell).
Certainly not mixed with coke.

RE4Freak 1 year ago
@RE4Freak Hi there. First of all thank you for the nice words about me. Gotta love the internet. Well, you're right, some people would love that, and of course I respect that. I just think that when the distillers put so many years in making single malt, we as customers need put at least some time and effort into enjoying the product. Ice cools down the tounge so you can't taste as much and a tumbler glass don't give you any aromas. I'm not here to insult, just to inform... Peace

@GuitarPeter22 What glass? I use more like a small wine glass, more appropriate? Can you make a video? Thanks for the tips :)
chvick 1 year ago
@chvick Thanks for the question! A small wine glass is definitely better than a big tumbler glass. But try and use a nosing glass. Just google "nosing glass". The shape of the glass makes the whisky ideal for nosing and actually also tasting! And it's also possible to warm the whisky by placing your hand under the glass. I think you will be impressed with the difference this glass makes. I was indeed!
GuitarPeter22 1 year ago
@GuitarPeter22 Thank you! Will do.. looks like a nice glass

@GuitarPeter22 i don't wanna have love with it man:)))))))))))i love it but not in a way you do...u and ur whiskey should get a room!
numbtesticle 1 year ago
@GuitarPeter22 i think it depends on the whisky how much water needs or doesnt need to be added.
unwhack 1 year ago
@unwhack Hi! It really does. Whisky can be rough at cask strength and you will often want to add a bit of water to it. But the Glenfiddich 12 yo is as we all know at 40% and in my opinion it doesn't need more water. When he adds that much water the strength will become between 20-30% - and actually that's what the professional nosers do when they need to make tasting notes, find whisky to a blend etc, because all the flavours and aromas are easier to separate at that strength.
GuitarPeter22 1 year ago
@unwhack (continued) But it's not the same as enjoying the whisky ;-)

@GuitarPeter22 thought so to, as long as I have been drinking scotch, but found myself sipping Dalmore out of a tumbler with a cube of ice once the heat hit 30-35 degrees haha )

@ghlieme I wish you were there last week at the bar I was at. I ordered mine neat and they served it in a chilled glass.
Detroitsownson 1 year ago
@ghlieme I'm just wondering..... You DO know that some whiskys are supposed to be served ''seriously'' chilled or/with ice?
ts2101 10 months ago
@ts2101 : What kind of whiskys are you thinking of? Sadly enough that this is supposed for "some whiskys". But never (NEVER) with a single malt (even if some marketing freak of Macallan suggests so for the 8 year old...They would even sell their grandma for new and young customers). Whoever suggests taking ice with a good malt takes into account that it changes the molecular structure in a way that it covers the flavours rather than opening them up.
ghlieme 10 months ago
@ghlieme Yes, it's true what you say that about ice and the way it affects the molecular structure. But have you ever heard about the saying ''Less, is more.''?
Because everyone does have a different palate (''sense of taste''), which DO make everyone perceive the taste differently!
This is what makes a whisky, that may be perfect for one person.... may not be any good for another person!
For what concerns me, I do prefer single malts from Speyside. especially Glenfiddich 18 year (WO. ice!)
ts2101 10 months ago
@ts2101 : Okay okay, I am convinced. And I already got the point before: drink whatver you like however you like it. But it doesn`t keep me from saying "NO" to ice in a single malt.
Call me a snob or whatever you like - I know what I like!
Slàinte mhath to all whisky lovers - ON or OFF the rocks!

Most of the whiskies across the world are spelt without the "e" (particularly Scotch Whisky). On the other hand, typically Irish and American whiskies are spelt with the extra "e".
creativ29 2 years ago 3
...and you have somehow managed to make up your own spelling of: 'Whiskie" :P
~Frosty.
Rapidpanda1st 2 years ago
LOL... yeah i almost ended up making my own word... but when it comes to the plural form there is no standard convention.... even if you check up the manufacturers' sites you will find variations... i have seen people use "whiskies" as the plural form of "whisky" and "whiskeys" as the plural form of "whiskey"

I am suspect of the knowledge claimed by the presenters of all these Scotch videos on youtube. There are two spellings of whiskey-whisky. Scotch Whisky is always spelled whisky. all other types of whiskey are spelled whiskey.

Couldn't agree more. Would not clean my toilet bowl with it. Additionally, if a whisky is to be nosed you are meant to cut it 50/50 with water
ellieedinburgh 3 years ago
You both are idiots. Glenfiddich 12 years old is a great single malt and Glenfiddich 18 years old is judge to be the best 18 years old whisky in the world.
IloveAlexisBledel689 2 years ago 6
Ever had a 30, 40, or 50yo Glenfiddich? If so you'd probably change your mind. Glenfiddich 12 is not even close to being the best, but it's far from the worst.
Borg561 3 years ago 3
why would you want a whisky that old. It peaks much sooner then that. I will take a 15yr any day over a 30.
oxman0313 3 years ago 4
I like Glenfiddich 12 yr old, i tried a minature of an 18 theo ther day and i just fucking lvoed it omg,was like sex in the me mouth lol, shame it`s £45 :-( but anybody who says Glenfiddich is nasty shouldn`t be drinking whisky.
CaptainStriker 3 years ago 3
@oxman0313 Not all whiskys peak when they're young. Some whisky aged in former sherry barrels can and will age well for many decades. I'm not saying all old whisky is good. I've had a 52yo Macallan that wasn't that great, but I've had 48, 50, and 52yo cask samples of Glenfiddich that were fantastic (50 was by far my favorite). One of my favorite scotches of all time is a Glenfarclas that was aged entirely in a former port barrel for 27 years (bottled for the Dundee Dell).
Borg561 8 months ago
I'd like to try out one with a touch of water, I never did that before. Why not trying something new then it's good? :-)
