Lindberg's status is enhanced by his willingness to contribute to these kid's. Forever, those kids will talk about the time they played alongside Christian Lindberg. You can bet every dime you have they are playing their absolute best!
Did you hear the crowd gasp at 0:20 when that mob raised their bells? I would too, if I had that many howitzers aimed at MY ears. There are some very young players in that group who played very well indeed.
Not at 0:23, where they were indeed yelling for C.L., but the collective gasp at 0:20 just before he runs out, when they lift their bells. That's just the kind of reaction we are looking for when we get ready to play ("Run for it! Those things are loaded!")
Ahhh, I didn't hear the actual gasping. good call! I just find the whole thing sort of embarrassing. especially when he is just standing there in the middle, and the crappy band is messing up all around him. We're talking about a man who I've seen play with the best symphonies in the world, 30 minute + concerti (Aho at D.C. comes to mind) that really only he can play. And here he is reduced to a sort of side-show. I feel bad about it. He's done so much for modern music in general
I understand your respectful horror at how he might be debased by this, but think of it this way: how inspiring must it be for all those young players to be on stage with him, and how hard must they have worked to get to that level, and how much are they going to remember that moment and be motivated and inspired to practice and appreciate great music? I'm sure it did C.L. no harm, and it probably did the students a world of good!
I remember being inspired in that way as a teenager by being able to stand behind Doug Purviance, bass trombonist with Stan Kenton's band, and John Capon, bass trombonist with Phil Nimmons' band while they were rehearsing. They must have been annoyed with me and all my questions, but they undoubtedly contributed immeasurably to my development as a bass trombonist. I try to pay it back to developing players as much as I can as a result of how giving they were.
I'm a trombonist and I'm in sixth grade and I was asked to be in all district band! Yay!

Showing what trombones do the best: resting. There's a sizable portion of trombones just standing around waiting. FTW!
